Weight Loss Trend Help

I have been trying to lose weight for a few months now. I went up to 195 by the time I was done writing my thesis, and I wanted to go down. To do so, I've been running every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for increasing distances and speeds. I started at 5 mph for 3 miles with 3 walk breaks, and am up to 5.7 mph for 5.25 miles with 2 short walking breaks. I also lift weights on Tuesday, Thursday, and either Saturday or Sunday. I have cut my soda intake to a third, so about a can or less a day. I have also changed my lunch diet from pizza to Subway-type food. Other than that, I didn't change anything.

In about three and a half months, I've dropped about 13 pounds. I have a few questions-

- Is that a small or high amount?
- In the last two weeks, things have leveled off. I only lost 0.05 pounds last week, and things don't seem to be going down this week. I was 185 for about 6 years steady, but I currently want to go down to less than that. I have a chart to show the daily and weekly weights if you want to see it. I'm not crazy, but I am an engineer, so of course I wanted accurate data.
- Is it possible that the colder weather we've been having here the last few weeks is what's slowing down my weight loss?
- I'm 6' tall on the dime. What's a good weight to be?

13 pounds is not a whole lot of weight to lose in 3 months, but it is good. The reason you haven't lost more is because you are lifting weights. You are losing fat and gaining some muscle at the same time. Have you noticed a difference in your appearance. Take a picture of yourself shirtless of in your underwear. Every now and again pull that picture out and compare your then and now bodies.

Cut the soda completely, it is hindering your progress more than you think. You would be surprised if you replace the sodas with water.

I lost 50 lbs in about 8 months when I started my weight/diet routine. I'd say you're right on track to continue in becoming more healthy. Anyone expecting to lose weight fast is likely to return to their original weight either after getting to their desired weight or as soon as they realize that they can't stick to a diet/exercise schedule. As long as you are steady with your training, and you are cautious to eat right, I'd say you'll be in perfect shape in a year, and in acceptable weight in 4 or 5 months. You'll be able to outrun the cops pretty soon.

I am trying to loose weight as well (going under 100 kg again) and I found that replacing soda's with water helped a lot. The best thing I found out is that the change should lie in eat and exercise routines (i.e. lifestyle). Otherwise you'll eat back what you lost in no time.

Better take it slow and do it right than going up and down the scales each year.

6 feet tall and 182lbs is a pretty healthy size. Body composition will give you a more accurate picture of your figure. Keep lifting weights and doing the cardio and your weight may go up, but the body composition will be lower body fat. Get a set of skin calipers and learn how to use them. Losing 13 lbs of fat is a good thing, keep it up. Picture 13 pounds of butter sitting on a table (and not in your belly)...that's a lot of butter!

Yeah 13 pounds of butter is a pretty gross image.

Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. I'll think about taking the pictures, but I've always been paranoid about leaving semi-naked pictures of myself laying around (don't want anything to mar my stratospheric launch into politics). I actually started doing this after a horrible break up, and now do it for some minimal self esteem boost and to help me get to sleep.

Try a program set up by your gym if you are a member. A lot of gyms have programs that are geared toward losing weight. If not, try the internet. A good site that gives you specific plans for you and your body www.freetrainers.com.
