Best way to cook broccoli that keeps the nutrients in?
Hey people, I've been meaning to add more broccoli to my diet of fruits&veggies but I am not quite sure of the best way to cook them that keeps all the nutrients in. If you should share your favorite method it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

i just steam all my vegies til they are just a little crunchy. I figure that it is as close to raw as you can get!!

yep - steam them! Get a pot, fill it about 2" full and get a steamer (looks like a metal expandable flower) and stick it in the bottom of the pot. fill with clean broccoli, cover, and let it steam for about 10 minutes.

You can even steam in a microwave... Throw the brocolli in a microwave safe dish - put the juice of one memon, some garlic -- ok lots of garlic - cover the dish with cling wrap, and pierce once or twice to vent. Put in the microwave for a few minutes...
Remove cling wrap carefully... Enjoy |
I have heard that microwaving with plastic is not good to do. I dont remember the reasoning, but since I heard that Ive been using only wax paper in the microwave. just something to think about

I heard that plastic and plastic wrap can cause cancer, but then agian everything causes cancer these days.

I throw it in the same skillet I just cooked my meat in, and steam it in there for a minute. (lid on) This adds extra flavor with spices and juice. I like it with butter, or extra virgin olive oil drizzled on top, a little salt and pepper... MmmmMm.

steam is the way to go. When you choose your veggies, pick either frozen or fresh. With frozen veggies they blanch them first (boil them for a short about of time then put them into cold water and freeze them. this locks the nutrients in)
and fresh well all the nutrients are still there... and far as canned....least of them all |
Steaming is good. Any cooking takes away from the nutrients; however, some things tend to seal it in. For example, try quickly tossing it in a pan with already hot olive oil and garlic. The flavor is great and you lose very little because it gets sealed in.

that's right, light steam, or quick dip in bouiling water will preserve and maximize nutirent content
