Asking to telecommute?

I work in an environment where everything can be done from home. everything. I am a support engineer. sometimes I travel and am willing to continue. My wife is pregnant and when the baby comes I was thinking she would work part time and I would work one or 2 days at home, making day care time very minimal. problem is, I dont know how to ask for it without sounding like I just want to take advantage. anyone ever ask for this not expecting it and get it? how did you go about it? I have only been with this company for about 9 months but i would be about 1.5 years with the company before I needed it...

any suggestions? thanks!

here's something to think about...

Ask about how it affects your benefits...

If you have to be in the office or physically in the building for it to count towards your benefit acrrual be careful.

Some people inadvertantly lost benefits because they acrued time by days and not hours. This affected people from telecommuters to flexible workers (4 10 hour days) who inadvertantly didn't get the right benefits because it wasn't reflected correctly.

no not really as they ended up having to fix it...

it also screwed up people's accrural for vacations, so they ended up losing time from their vacations. Ask ask ask ask.. don't rely on them doing their job, as more often they aren't.

they only recently came up with a company policy for telecommuting after people have been doing it for 4 years. It was only after this policy went into effect that it meant that there were no benefits lost, but it took almost 3 years to hammer out all the details and gotchas.

finally...

double check with your accountant.

You may lose or gain certain tax benefits. I worked in NYC and lived in NJ, when I telecommuted I didn't have to pay NYC taxes that I normally did thus more money in my pocket. Eventually I got audited by NY State and they rebuked my claims and I had to fight for them. It eventually worked itself out but it was a couple of thousand dollars that I would have had to pay out.
