Apartment Insurance
Hopefully this is the right place for this post.. Can someone tell me a good company to get apartment insurance from? I currently rent out of a duplex and I'm looking into getting insurance incase of any fire or break-in. Cheap but good would be nice - as always. Thanks.

Does the place that you have car insurance place from sell Apt. insurance as well? Usually, apt. insurance is quite cheap.
|
I'm through Progressive and they don't sell apt. insurance unfortunately.

Mine is thru Allstate... I have replacement value on all my electronics (all my stuff actually) and I think I pay about 15-20 dollars a month. While i haven't had to use it, my very first apartment I hadn't thought about insurance, the first two weeks I lived there, I was burglarized, most everything I had, and I didn't have much (television, vcr, 75 video tapes, stereo, leather jacket,a few pieces of jewelry, and a few other things, the only electronic that was left was my clock radio. was all stolen. Took me months to get everything replaced because I didn't have the money to buy new.
If you have expensive jewelry (ie engagement ring) you'd probably have to get a rider for it. |
I would really just tell you to call local places and ask them. See if they can tell you everything that they will cover and then make your decision. Shopping around is the best you can do to make sure you get the best coverage for the best price.
Hope you find what you're looking for. |
Used our car insurance agent (State Farms). $15 a month, IIRC. Worthwhile for us, since apartment complexes are a haven for crime no matter where you live. Think they found 2-3 meth labs and had several murders in the year we lived there, not to mention the two times my wife's car was broken into and the time the cops caught the guys stealing the wheels from my car.
All this in one of the nicer complexes you can find in the burbs of PDX, OR. Go figure. |
im using Liberty Mutual. It went UP to $11/month when I added my fiances engagement ring. it was 9 something before that. having it with car insurance helps, you get the multi policy discount.

Do get your renters insurance with your car insurance. It will end up saving you money. In my case the discount I got in my car insurance was just about the same in my monthly payment for renters insurance, so it was like I was getting it for free.
Also, some apartments require that you need renters insurance. But most of all, piece of mind. |
I would never rent an apartment without Renters Insurance from a company like Allstate or State Farm. Esp. in CA. where so many fires happen every summer, or so it seems. Been there, done that - it's so traumatic - you can't imagine, but at least we had that insurance.
PS- Never use Weber gas grills. Stick with charcoal. |
I have my renters insureance through Erie, my auto is with progressive, but same insurance agent for both. I have like 50k worth and it ends up running me roughly a dollar a day. Well worth the cost.

If you are former military, you can get USAA. I use USAA for checking, savings, auto, life, homeowners, mutual funds, etc.
Non-profit, very low prices and you get a rebate at the end of the year based on profits for the company--kinda like being a stockholder. Also, I have an "electronics" rider on my insurance. If any of my electronics equipment breaks--regardless of how--they replace it. I just used to replace a digital camera that I dropped and broke. |
I used AllState at the time I needed just apt renters insurance...
it was about $200 because I had several riders for electronics and other items. I stayed with them when I got my homeowners insurance and it went up another $20 |
I have state farms for my apt insurance and Im very happy with them. I got it mainly to cover my wifes diamonds and my tools in the garage. I'd say any company will be reasonable. we pay 125/year in quarterly payments
|
StateFarm is pretty good.
Be sure to get replacement value, not 'actual value'. Meaning: replacement value means if your 32" TV is stolen, it pays to repalce with a 32" TV. Actual value, Your 2 year old 32" TV is stolen ($400), they pay you $300 cause of depreciation. |

16 bucks a month is awesome, i need to order it because i just got a new flatscreen plasma. Renters insurance is quite a deal.
|
When I move into a new apartment I will definatly get renters insurance. I just wouldn't feel comfertable without the security of knowing my property is protected.
|
Someone else said State Farm. I paid $12 a month when I was renting. We had replacement coverage for all our stuff just like any other policy would. One of the reasons why it was so cheap is because we’ve been with them for almost 7 years without any claims. Because of that, we get discounts on everything. Now, our homeowners and both cars are with them.
One thing to note though, "replacement value" will be more expensive than if you get "market value" The others have already stated why. |
Can I ask, what's the difference between Renter's Ins. and Apartment Ins?
