Work dilemma...transfer or not?
 

So...I'm a bank teller, and I rather like my job. I do NOT, however, like the people I work with. There are two tellers at my branch besides me; one is annoying, rude, immature, and did I mention annoying? The other is older, but she's so damn moody, if you look the wrong way at her, she's pissed off for the rest of the day.

Another branch's teller is on vacation this week, and I was elected to fill in for her (which I didn't mind a bit.)

Today...I found out they have a teller position open. Now I have a bit of a dilemma.

On one hand, I love the second branch. It's busier, and the day goes by so much faster when you're actually working as opposed to watching cars go by and waiting on one or two customers an hour. It's also more professional, better staffed, and I've worked there before. (I worked for the same bank three years ago, and left when I got married and moved out of state.)

Sounds great so far, doesn't it? I transfer, become a much happier person, and stop dreading going to work everyday.

Well...at my "home branch," I'm the only full time teller. The older teller used to be full time, but switched to part time because it was "too stressful." (She'd go back to full time if I left.) The branch assistant (who's great) and I are the only ones who can properly open new accounts. We also seem to be the only two that know how to multi-task. I'm the only one who knows how the ATM works, and the only one that doesn't regularly miss work.

Basically, I feel like if I left, I'd be screwing everyone over. Sort of a "well, I'm happy, so good luck dealing with everything" situation. On the other hand, I hate going to work now, because I'm so tired of dealing with mood swings, immaturity, fixing other people's mistakes, and getting most of the workload because I'm the dependable one.

So...I can make myself happier, but feel guilty about it....or stay where I am, unhappy, but at least knowing I'm not screwing the managers.

Advice anyone?

To stay because the only other person there who isn't incompetent would have a hard time working with mental midgets is a noble, courageous, and ultimately ulcer-cultivating course of action.

Transfer, and give your old branch-assistant a call as soon as another position opens up at the second branch.

You come first. Make sure your happy before you worry about other people. Otherwise your in for lots of dissapointment.

Management will never fix the problem if they don't know about it, you're obviously very conciencious and an assent to the company, make the transfer and management will soon realise that without you there is a fundamental problem, they'll fix it soon enough.

Also, they'll realise what an asset you are, they may offer you a deal to come back and tidy house.

You are worried about how they will cope, that's admirable, but do you think they are worried about how you feel?

You have to look after your own health and happiness and if that means a move, then so be it.
The only possible reason I can see for staying is that there might be more room for promotion, because you are established there, the only full time teller, it's smaller etc.

Look out for number one, definitely, no question about it here. FatherTed's right about them not caring how you feel, all they care about (and it's fair enough) is that the bank is running smoothly and they've got adequate numbers of competent people working there. As for the other two women (?) you worked with, they seem content with staying where they are, pissing and moaning, you've got no obligation to stay there with them. Once you get the better position you'll never think of them again, and they won't think of you either once they've got a new staff member in your place.

Once you've got the position at the new place, then let the bosses know that your old place was understaffed or needed some retraining, whatever needs to be fixed. I wouldn't suggest telling them that before you've got the new job because they might see that as a reason to keep you there or they might think you're bitter about it. Don't let that happen, just let them know once your new position is secure.

Transfer, definitely! Their incompetence is not your problem, although your concern for their situation is admirable! Look at it this way: if you leave, somebody else will HAVE to learn to handle the things you're doing, so you're actually doing them a favor.

Also, you may want to talk to some of the workers at the other branch to confirm your first impressions, or spend some more time working there if possible. You don't want to trade the frying pan for the fire.

Yeah, this is an easy one: transfer. You are not responsible for the incompetence of others. Really. Improve your situation and be happy about it.

If you transfer, they'll have no choice but to do somethig about the rampant incompetence, therefore they'll end up restaffing, the quality of the bank's employees will go up, the bank will do more business, the value of the company will go up, and this will all be reflected in a measley 15-cent raise as a reward for your hard work. How can you lose?!

You sound like a good person.

However, good people are usually the ones who are over-worked, over-stressed and under-paid.

Do you honestly think Ms. Annoying and Ms. Mood-Swing would hesitate in taking the transfer away from you? I bet they wouldn't.

Your boss, although a nice guy, is only interested getting as much work out of you as possible. Right now you're an asset. Hard working, dependable, seemingly loyal and as such he's going to keep piling work upon you as long as he can. He's going to ride your work ethic as long and as hard as he can to avoid facing the real problem. Sounds a little bitter, eh? Well, I know how it works. I've been on both sides of that coin and have seen and done some pretty reprehensible things both to my employer and to my employees.

It's not that these people are complete assholes, far from it. They're just looking out for themselves, which is something you should be doing rather than worrying about being the bad guy.

You have a good heart CinnamonGirl. However, you need to do what is right for you. You may be very good at what you do, but there are other people in this world that can step in and fill your shoes. Their office will not close down due to your departure. Ok, well it might, but doubtful.

Sounds like you have one foot out the door as it is. I say put that other foot out there and take the job that will make you happy.

Well CG, I'd say that it's pretty much unanimous as to what your course of action should be. (I also agree that to transfer would be your best choice) Any questions?

Fuck people who are lazy and don't care to learn how to do their own job. There are plenty of those where I work also. Picking up the slack can get old very fast.

Transfer. It's ultimately branch management's job to build a competent team, and to accept the inevitability of turnover. It's your job to do a good job for the company and at the same time look out for your own best interests. You do not owe your health or sanity to the people you work with, especially if they are not looking out for _their_ own best interests by trying to do a good job.

When you leave, your co-workers will be faced with a choice: do their jobs as they should be done, or fail. It's really up to them. And the branch assistant will have to do his or her job, as well, and counsel or discipline them as appropriate.

Frankly, if I worked with such people and the situation wasn't changing, I'd be out of there. If the branch manager is so good, he or she shouldn't tolerate this.

Well, apparently Mark (manager at the second branch) has already mentioned something to the woman that would approve a transfer...and she said she doesn't want to "shake things up" and move people around. Huh?

Anyway, I talked to my assistant manager (the branch manager is on vacation...again), and she said she'll be very sorry to see me go, but she understands the reasons why I want to leave, since she's feeling the exact same thing.

Yesterday and today were busy (not customer wise...sigh...but with end of the month stuff that didn't get done), so I haven't had a chance to talk with Debbie. I'll shoot her an email tomorrow, if nothing else. Even though she said no to Mark, he and my manager seem to think if *I* ask she won't say no. The fact that we'll be moving soon also comes into play, since we'll be about 15 minutes from the second branch, and 45 minutes from the branch I work at now.

So I guess you get another cliffhanger...but hopefully this will all be settled within the next day or two.

aaaaaaaand, update!

I was approved for the transfer to Franklin, but after a LOT of thinking and stressing, I decided to stay where I am.

The main reason is the promotion thing... here, I was pretty much guaranteed a promotion...in Franklin, there'd be four tellers ahead of me.

And, it's a good thing I did that... since I'm getting promoted! w00t! I'll be getting the head teller job sometime within the next month or two.

Oh, and Mood Swing Lady quit. I was quiet for a long time, but when she and the younger teller started arguing in front of a customer, I finally had to say something, and boy, did I set things off. She ended up throwing her keys on the assistant manager's desk and walking out.

I was terrified the manager would bitch me out for saying anything, but instead, she told me I handled the situation very well. Go me :D
