Jumper's Knee

Hey guys

I'm an active basketball player and, like most sportsmen, i hate playing with a nagging injury.

I've been led to believe that i suffer from jumper's knee. I get this blunt kinda pain everytime jump, but the pain usually subsides within a day or two. A friend told me I might have over-compressed the ligament between the shin and the kneecap.

Is there anyone who suffers from the same ailment, who could maybe gimme some advice on how to remedy the situation? Any advice would be welcome.

Thanx

My brother had it (he plays basketball too).

The doctor had him wear specially fitted shoes, and do special stretches. He also recommended anti-inflammatory meds and a knee brace (the kind you can buy at the drug store). HTH

It's called patellar tendonitis...which is funny because it's a ligament, not a tendon, but we won't get into that. Like jenjen said, take anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen for now. The best way to make it heal is to lay off the basketball a bit. A physiotherapist could give you a better recovery strategy after examining your knee though. No need to see a doctor, it's a really simple really common injury, and a physio can show you movements to speed healing and give you advice on how much basketball you can keep playing.

I had some knee issues a couple of years ago brought on by too much running. It was a dull ache under the knee cap that hung around constantly. It's not exactly what you've got but kind of close.
At any rate I found that icing my knees after exercise really helped. I got a couple of big cold packs that were designed for the neck and shoulders. They really chill the area down nicely. Ice 'em for about 20 minutes and be sure to put something between the cold and the skin to prevent nasty burns.
At some point you're going to have to start exercing again to complete the healing process and I found that the ice really came through for me.

Good luck,
G

When I was in Junior High, I fractured both of my knees. I felt the pain in the knee/shin area. It wasn't a serious fracture; just the front of the knee, but a fracture nonetheless. My uncle is a chiropractor (he's the one who X-Rayed it for me), and he had me wearing a knee brace, and whenever I would run, I could never run downhill; ONLY uphill.

That healed after a couple of years (it took a long time because it was right when I started to get really active), and now that I, too, am heavily into playing basketball, I fear that I might've re-fractured them a few months ago. I'm feeling the exact same pain that I had felt years before; it only hurts when I bend my knees to take a jumper or a free-throw.

My point is you should probably get it X-Rayed, even though it might just be "jumper's knee." My injury is also a very common injury, mostly among young kids, but if it truly has reoccured in my case (I still need to get them re-X-Rayed), then it's very possible that it can carry on into adulthood.
