Pets

I am going to restart the thread about pets. What kind of pets do you have?

There are two rescued greyhounds who have taken over my house and trained me to provide them with food and water.

Fly 04-19-2003 05:06 PM

we bought a horse just before xmas.

arabian gelding,13yrs old,his name is Legacy.

great with the kids too.the prick don't like me much, but the previous guy used to whip him lots.so i'll go slow and easy on him.:D

Joe Fnord 04-19-2003 05:09 PM

One cat. A very spoiled orange tiger named Skye.

Janie 04-19-2003 05:11 PM

none, unfortunately. hedgehog died a couple months back, as did our strangely long-lived fish. a cat would be great to have. which brings something else up:

what is everyone's ideal pet and why?

G_Whiz 04-19-2003 05:17 PM

Three cockatiels. My daughter was into bird breeding for a while. So we got the first hatchling (a male), followed about a year later by 2 white females.

Over the years, we have had dogs, cats, fish, and a variety of birds.

phunktastic 04-19-2003 05:18 PM

One really old cat, one big fat cat, and one small younger cat. Used to have a dog, but he's in doggy heaven now.

I'd love to have a monkey.. A friend who's visiting the States from Portugal told me that in the less populated areas, people just let monkeys come stay at their house and take them in as pets.

Either that or an African Grey Parrot,, one of the smartest animals. Except It'd be a lot of responsibility. And the chances of it outsmarting you and killing you while you sleep are better. Good thing is the damned birds live so long. It'd probably outlive me.

phoenix1002 04-19-2003 05:19 PM

Lets see... I have two cats, one black named Eclipse, one calico named Patches. My ideal pet... my friend's dead chocolate lab (obviously not dead, ideally). She accuses me of only liking her dog because she (the dog, not my friend) would run up to me and roll over so I could scratch her belly as soon as I walked into the house, and was just a great dog in general. Maybe I'll get a chocolate lab when I get my own place, who knows.

Grondar 04-19-2003 05:19 PM

We took in my grandparents dog when they died. It's a German Shepard/Rottweiler mix.

We also have 2 cats, both of which were strays we took in. One is 7-10 years, the other is younger 1-3 years.

All very friendly, but the older cat has moods. :)

sierra2774 04-19-2003 05:27 PM

I have a German Shorthair Pointer that we got through Rescue and two cats, but not by my choice. My Dog is great, very smart!

ratbastid 04-19-2003 05:31 PM

Two cats and a dog.

Cat 1: 5 years old, prima donna bitch par excellence. Will draw blood as soon as look at you, unless she wants something from you.

Cat 2: 2 year old fat female. Generally agreeable, though greedy

Dog: 1 year old lab/chow/collie mix, mostly black. Sweetest, mellowest girl you ever saw. Currently having issues with submissive urination (which is fun when guests come over), but apart from that, very little trouble.

Jeff 04-19-2003 05:35 PM

I've got one little critter, a silver shaded persian. Normally these cats have those flat ugly faces, they look like E.T.. This one didn't though, so we named him Elliot. He's 16 years old, and dying of liver failure :(.
Bad pic of him here:

TFP PETS

...No, NOT Penthouse pets! (I read your dirty mind already).

What pets do you have or have had? Anything really different?

My last pets were two greyhounds off the track, but the ex has them.

Before that, I had two cats we adopted. They came out of a "cat lady's" house and later developed FIV (feline AIDS) and one, Feline leukemia. Remarkably, we had those cats for 10 and 12 years (Nikki will tell you how amazing this is).

Aside from some other beloved cats and dogs, my most unusual pet was a rat I got in college. One of my roomies had a sister in highschool and she kidnapped this lab rat they were going to kill. They suspected her, so she hid the rat in our dorm apartment. This guy didn't want it, so I got it. His name was Vern and he turned out to be a great pet. He would run about and poke his nose in everything and he never bit.

My mom freaked out when I brought him home for the summer, but she got used to him. After a while she could even pet him. I finally had to have him put down when he got a brain tumor. He was a great pet for 2 1/2 years. I just threw his cage away during my last move :(

Angel 04-19-2003 07:15 PM

Dogs...always. I have never had anything but dogs. Oh wait, I did have a hamster when I was 8 that bit my finger and upon yanking my hand away while it still clinging to my finger I "threw" it across the room...it was an accident! It died the next day...My Papa used to tease me that it died from biting me! No wonder I stuck with dogs!

I am a dog lover. Had 2 Husky / Shephard mixes. One lived for 17 years and the other my ex still has, she is 10. Also a little Terrier / Maltese mix who lived until one week past her 17th birthday. Must be something in the number 17?

i8one2 04-19-2003 07:21 PM

my room has a 100+pound thing, a monster

i8one2 04-19-2003 07:31 PM

Mongolguy 04-19-2003 07:56 PM

Two cats, Spot and Dot, who allow me to live in their house and take care of them. and a cover hogging dashound that thinks she's a mastiff, named Raven.

We are nuts on basenjis. At any one time, there are up to seven here, counting fosters and the ones we own.

ZërØ¢ØØ£ 04-19-2003 08:47 PM

I have a full blown AKC paperd English Bulldog named Tripoli. I love him to death, he is about 4 years old

vermin 04-19-2003 08:50 PM

Baby - 7.5 year old short hair black cat with white patch on her chest
Sonny - 6 year old fluffy orange tabby (actually tan) fixed male
Mikki - 6 year old fluffy grey tabby/calico spayed female

Lucy - 7 year old golden retriever/irish setter/spaniel female

3 big goldfish, 1 angel fish, 2 alge eaters - no names, what would be the point?

Somenosuke 04-19-2003 09:02 PM

One wobbly, chunky cat named Scooter, who is identically colored to my dog who died back in August '01. It's freaky. He can be really annoying sometimes, but he's cool anyway. :)

oane 04-19-2003 09:16 PM

I had a parrot as a kid. It flew awayhttp://66.227.101.70/cwm/3dlil/eek2.gif

I had a cuuuute Rabbit too. A cat ate ithttp://216.40.249.192/s/contrib/lynx/grncry.gif

I am now afraid to have any pet....:(

Valgaav 04-19-2003 09:53 PM

Two Iguanas Spike and Vicious.

Frosstbyte 04-19-2003 10:06 PM

Cat named Sasha and a fish named...uh...well, I guess I never named it. But it sits there in my room and hangs out. I want to get a huskie at some point though. Love those things.

Xixox 04-20-2003 01:23 AM

Two Sugar Gliders, Ezri and Shiva. Mischevious little critters, but cute & snuggly as well.

snowy 04-20-2003 02:03 AM

i officially have two cats named fuzz bucket and spud, respectively, as well as a dog named jack. the cats are regular ol' american tabbies, and the dog is a half black lab half greyhound mix and cuter than a bug's ear. i also unofficially have a small grey cat named marissa who is really my roommate's but spends all her time with me. i also had 16 goldfish, but a heron ate them all so we have to buy new ones. :(

*Nikki* 04-20-2003 05:56 AM

does my trouser snake count?

sapiens 04-20-2003 06:41 AM

I have not had a good history with pets. I once had a goldfish that disappeared. My parents thought that I found it dead and flushed it. They figured that I was so distraught that I didn't mention it. About 6 months later my mom found a dried out goldfish behind one of her cookbooks. Apparently,it had committed suicide. A few years later my sister and I both had hamsters. Once morning, we woke up and found them both dead. It looked as though one ate the other one and then died. We had fed them regularly. It didn't make much sense. Now, my wife and I have a airdale terrier/chow/husky mix. He's great.

paddyjoe 04-20-2003 06:52 AM

Cat #1...Larry
Cat#2....Lucy
Fish........Red

Had a great dog, a Newfoundland, Pearl, that recently developed bone cancer and had to be put down. I guess the one thing about having a pet that I hate. They become one of your family, but just don't last long enough.

Zotz 04-20-2003 07:47 AM

Three cats, two fish tanks, and one corn snake

ARTelevision 04-20-2003 07:58 AM

up until last summer, we had two keeshonds: Hamlet and Dream. Dream is no longer alive.

So there's Hamlet and four cats: Ivy, Isabell, Java, and Perl.

There are fish in the tank and koi in the pond.

kgb 04-20-2003 08:06 AM

I had a couple of rats for awhile, Trinity and Finoa. They were pretty cool but I got tired of cleaning their cage and they really weren't a very big hit with the ladies.

Now I have a cat named Scratchy McBitey. He likes to scratch me and then bite me. He is a good cat though.

SexyCat 04-20-2003 08:10 AM

I have a big, fat, lazy cat. But he's really a good kitty :)

apetaster 04-20-2003 08:17 AM

I had two goldfish when I was a kid. Avenger and Destroyer. They did not live up to their names and lasted about a month. End of pets for me.

WhoaitsZ 04-21-2003 05:28 PM

I have two Black Collared lizards, a female named Lilly (if anyone cares to see her goto http://nand.net/adep/z/Picture%20012.jpg)

I have a leopard gecko named Raptor (http://nand.net/adep/z/Picture%20014.jpg)

i have two cats and a huge dog i adopte named Jeb. he is great dane/boxer. he's BIG :)

i had a four foot catfish too i released last month........

rockogre 04-21-2003 05:39 PM

Two dogs. A german shepard / timber wolf cross, and a huge, 118 pound, something or the other that looks slightly like a german shepard. Two cats of mixed heritage, the occasional armidillo, couple of roadrunners that live somewhere on my place, and several wild birds that live out of our bird feeders.

Oh, and the occasional Bullsnake that lives in the shed that my wife doesn't know about.

second puppy, Abby, is only 9 weeks old - a springer spaniel, so cute

they are both adorable

we also have a cat, Zoey, who was born in the "wild" and left by mom, so we've adopted. Very strange animal...

one cat, named Ginger :) she's the sweetest kitten ever, I miss her at school. :( I can't wait till I have my own place and then I can actually have pets again, silly school.

pickledaddy 04-22-2003 05:55 PM

I used to have a gerbil, but it died a few months ago. Now I don't have any pets. I want a dog, but can't have one. :(

louiedog 04-22-2003 06:49 PM

Right now at home I have a green spotted puffer, about 10 zebra danios, some cories, some plecos, and about 500 kirbs(just had babies last week). For anyone that knows tropical fish, don't worry, they're not all in the same tank. Behind the house I have a koi pond that I dug a couple of summers ago. In it I have some koi and goldfish that spend their winters in my basement where I don't need to worry about how deep the pond freezes.

I have a black and grey tabby cat named Elder because his coloring makes him look like an old man. He's 14 this month and still acts like a kitten. He developed epilepsy late last winter and now walks around the house stoned on barbituates to control the seizures.

Unfortunately my great big newfoundland died 2 weeks ago. She was 4 years past her life expectancy and her health had been rapidly declining over the last month. She's now under a nice big tree a little past my backyard.

One of my friend's works at the vet school here. A guy brought in a cat he found on the street. They explained they weren't the pound and couldn't accept the cat but he just turned around and left. My friend smuggled it into the dorm and nursed the poor thing back to health. She was really really sick but recovered and no one found out she was there.

I also wish I could get a cat here at school, unfortunately my girlfriend is allergic. :(

scarebearjinx 04-22-2003 08:56 PM

Two old fart dogs
Brutus Lab / Rotie Mix 12 yrs old
Kuma Lab/Shepard Mix

and then there is this psycho squirrel that lives in a tree next to my house. He comes over and gets all jacked up eating the hummingbird food, then runs around the house and eats any ant traps we have setting out, after that he goes nuts and chews on the siding of the house. If it wasn't soo funny I'd shoot the little shitter plus the fact that I'm a buddist and we don't do the kill things bit

drawerfixer 07-30-2003 05:28 PM

One dog named Tasha. Half Airedale terrier/pot bellied pig. At least it looks like it.

8 gerbils, 1 fish

BadForm 07-30-2003 06:28 PM

Two pampered cats, and a third that shows up every day at the door looking for food. The third one pays more attention to me than the other two :).

Elphaba 08-10-2006 07:45 PM

Two dogs today, and only one tomorrow. Fresh water tropical fish that have been named and have some recognition that I feed them. (Jumping through hoops of fire will come later) :)

We pamper the wild critters, and some are virtually tame. Flyman will declare a jihad against me when he learns that they are sqwrls. Heh.

Eweser 08-11-2006 07:09 AM

I have a Lhasa Apso that's a house dog that never really grew named Molly and two outside dogs. Tuffy, who is ~16 years old and has arthritis really bad, and Patches, who is hyper and likes to play with plastic bottles and sticks.

Always had dogs and cats growing up. My favorites, besides Molly, would have to be the Doberman Pinscher named Zip who grew up with me and PC who was, as my cousin said, the devil cat. She loved to terrorize my brother especially, but anyone in general when she was in the mood.

silent_jay 08-11-2006 10:07 AM

I have 4 Fantail Goldfish, used to have 5 but one died.

balefire88 08-11-2006 10:10 AM

I'm just not an animal person. :(

Dane Bramage 08-11-2006 10:53 AM

oye vey...

I live with a Border Collie mix named Penny. Great dog... afraid of t-stoms, but very sweet and timid.

Then there is this obnoxious creature named Sir Nigel the Brat that comes in and eats every night. 16 pound orange tabby. Major, major doo-doo head. Although he is a hunter extrodinare. Likes to leave us "gifts" at the bottom of our stoop in the mornings. This week it was a BAT! Can you imaine... a freaking bat. I was quite suprised by that one.

We also keep a beta fish in one little tank and two gold-fish in another tank.

Nice little family we got going. Thinking about getting some birds. Finches. I think they would be cool although Nigel might eat them.

Meditrina 08-12-2006 06:19 PM

I have an orange tabby cat named Simba. He reminds me of a cross between Garfield (lazy and will eat anything) and Morris the Cat (just big and orange). I have posted pics of him in the TFP pets thread in Tilted Photography. He is a people cat. He loves to be where everyone is. Sometimes he will even sit on top of the game the kids are playing. He reminds me when it is bed time by hopping onto the couch next to me and practically sits on my laptop, licking my hands as I type. Then he lets me know when it is morning time, by either licking me or chewing on the cord from the lamp near my bed. He is great with the kids and they love him to pieces (unless he eats their toys, which he has done many times). He is a good cat. Even my dad loves him!

Elphaba 08-12-2006 06:36 PM

Ahhh...He watches over his people. :)

Meditrina 08-12-2006 06:39 PM

I like that, Elphaba. It made me smile, and describes Simba perfectly.

Surprisingly, widow, this sounds exactly like my best friend's cat--also named Simba. Simba's favorite activity is to jump up on my friend's Dad's lap while he's in his recliner, survey everyone, and fall asleep, while secretly keeping one eye on everyone else.

My border collie, Albert.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...gh/Albert2.jpg

The smartest, most wonderful pet ... IMO

raeanna74 08-13-2006 06:43 AM

Two guinea pigs - Minnie and Lola (Anybody want them? They were a gift, they make a mess, and they cost me the most time and money.)
Two parakeets - Sky (blue) and Sunny (green and yellow)
Two Betas - Pat and Gary
Four Goldfish - Baby, Lucy, George, and Susie
Two cats - Catrina (3 yrs old) Itty Bitty (6 weeks old). Catrina does not appreciate the newest addition but she's SLOWLY getting used to it.

I love having our own mini, indoor, petting zoo. :p The kids love it too.

Thanks. This was a pic taken by the previous owner who was into the whole dog show thing. Albert is retired now from "showbusiness" at 5 years old and gets to just be a real dog with me. I love him to pieces.

I have several fishies!

Jerush - ("Ugly Bob" according to Turbotom) a battered but loved long-finned black tetra. He had been terribly chased and bothered by his tankmates when I purchaseed him, even had fin-rot. He recovered well with a little MelaFix, and has been healthy and happy for the past year.

Patricia - an interactive, HUGE bottom-feeder whom I inherited from an elementary school that was retiring their fish tank. She and Jerush play tag every now and again. It's hliarious to watch.

Firey & Mighty - "twin" guppies that have super bright, red, flaming designs. They have an incest problem, always flirting with their daughters.

Femme Jr. & Andro - female "twin" guppies that are a generic black and gray. Constantly pestered by the males.

Sunshine, Twilight, and Camomile - male "triplet" guppies, also of the younger generation. They like to pester the females every now and again, but mainly they like to school and occasionally tease Silver Tip.

Silver Tip - the "sherriff" of the tank. He's a tiny silver-tip tetra who dive-bombs any guppies that get in his or Jerush's way.

Gee, genuinegirly.

There's a lot happening in that fishtank of yours.

The most drama I get is when my dog decides to tip over the garbage can to look for leftovers.

i have two red toy poodles and a severe mcaw. got the mcaw after i had to put down a dog over ten years ago...just couldn't bear to do that again and birds live to be 50-60 years old.

then, we were visiting a friend who had a silver toy poodle. it was love at "first lap." then i learned that they don't shed and are the second smartest dog behind border collies. all that sealed the deal. these dogs are so smart i taught them to roll over inone afternoon each. wonderful pets!!

I've had a lot of pets. Everything from goats to ostriches. Now though I have one annoying bird (maroon bellied conure) that I'm trying to get rid of, a very smart greyhound/boxer mixed dog, and 2 cats.

One cat, gray, female, five years old, named Selina. She is so gentle and submissive that upon being approached by a stranger she'll lay down and flop over on her back.

About 30 fishies, but they're Grace's thing, so I don't know species or names. Watching Selina watching the fish can be an afternoon's entertainment alone.

I like that in a cat.

My brother's cat does that. He's also a very chatty cat. Mac would sit in my path and meow at me politely as if to converse and I'd meow back. We'd go back and forth like this for a while ... I sometimes wonder if this fella is trying to tell me something.
