Heartburn is killing me.
I have terrible heartburn right now, but no money to run out and buy a remedy and minimal stuff(food, etc.) in the apartment. Any ideas folks? I probably have acid reflux, but have never had it diagnosed. Been a while since it's been this bad. Help me out. What should I do?

Well, since you've gotten no replies and I'm guessing your reflux still exists, I'll take my best shot...
The reflux can come from a few things, mainly being from un-agreeing food or from stress. Un-agreeing food usually includes spicy stuff, as rough as tobasco and as mild as ketchup. I'd start by cutting back on those. If you find it coming at really random times, maybe consider your stress as a factor. I know it's hard; Maybe you consider yourself to be calm in general. But the next few times you get it, think about what was going on beforehand with your life and with what you ate. You might be surprised with the conclusions you draw. Either way, if it continues, see your doctor (if funding permits) and ask about aciphex. There might be some newer stuff recently, however about 2 years ago, the stuff came out and was an absolute wonderdrug for the population plagued by frequent indigestion. Best of luck to you. For me, it came and passed, maybe as I matured (around ages 16-18). Maybe you'll see the same thing happen. If not, I really recomend consulting with your doctor. It seems to be a pretty frequent topic to them. peace ps- for the time being, I definitely recomend tums or rolaids. For a good while, I never left home without a few rounds of em ;) |
anything that has calcium carbonate in it should do the trick. Tums, Rolaids, Chalk, should all help kill the symptoms.
If it still persists, try getting rid of acidic, spicy, and greasy foods. Oh, and tums are cheap, they should cost less than a dollar for a couple of rolls, I just ate a couple because I get heartburn whenever I drink. Best of luck! |
Zantac 75 is the end all for me. Doctors can prescibe stronger stuff if you need it. That and watch your diet like -Ever- said. Just take the meds an hour before you eat.

On the topic of heartburn... I have been experiencing more of it lately though thankfully lately hasn't included the last month or so. I first got it extremely bad after downing a significant amount of whiskey and pepsi. I then noticed it whenever I drank soda. Doing a little research on the topic I found that sugar is a no-no along with spicy foods. I also read that drinking milk actually does not help, though my personal experience seems to be in contradiction to this. Hopefully I am done with heartburn for awhile.

Avoid eating or drinking prior to bedtime. You'll produce acid which will reflux easier when you're lying down. Use zantac or pepcid. If they don't work you really need to see your doc for something stronger- there are some excellant prescription drugs available now. If that doesn't work, the next step is endoscopy!

Eat more fruit such as grapes and strawberries!

I like Gaviscon myself... seems to help out when needed, the generic ones work well also.
I don't have GERD or acid reflux, but I have a hiatal hernia.... makes for some good burps... |
I had this REAL bad for a while when I was in high-school. Turns out I had a hiatal (sp??) hernia. I went to my chiropractor and he fixed it. Took him a couple minutes and no more pain, now I can eat ANYTHING.
Before taking any drugs, ask your chiropractor if he/she can help |
