when i wake up...is that normal? it is there quite often when i wake up

Well, yes, it's highly normal. It's dirt and crap that got flushed out of your eye while you were sleeping. Since you didn't wipe it off while it was wet (How could you? You were sleeping.), it dried up and caked in the corner of your eye.

However, you shouldn't touch your eyes with your fingers, use a moistened tissue or something to remove the gook.

'Sleep' as it is known over here is a collection of all the dust, dead skin cells and salts that your eye collects as you sleep.
During REM cycles this is moved to the corner of your eyes, where without disturbance it collects into a nice big pile for when you wake up.

Actually...if you just started to get massive amounts of yellow goo that seem to tape your eye shut, it might be pink eye...in which case, yes, a doctor's visit might be good.

My mom used to call it "sleep" as it always happens when you do. Its the tearing thats cleaning your eyes when you are asleep.
