Can I get an infection from biting myself?
 

Heh, strange topic, I know. Anyway, I consider myself a pretty laid back, easy going type of guy almost all of the time. However, when I lose my temper, I really lose my temper. Usually this occures when I'm playing video games (counter-strike), working on computers (fucking small parts), or working on my car (fucking BMW). Of course, I will always get a lot more pissed off if it's hot, I can't stand the heat.

So anyway, I usually bite my index finger in my right hand when I get pissed off as to avoid punching myself in the head or breaking something (cell phone, keyboard, remote, etc). I was working a computer the other day it was like 95 degrees and this thing just wouldn't cooperate so I bit my finger... but I bit it pretty hard. I broke the skin and it really hurt but it was bleeding, so I thought nothing of it.

Well I woke up the next morning and it was all filled with puss and swollen and hurt to touch it really bad. I had to go all through school like this, it sucked. So when I got home I set myself up in my bathroom with a brand new, sanitized razor blade, some antibiotic soap, a tube of neosporin, cotton balls and a box of band aids. I cut finger up and it was pretty messy, blood, puss and skin everywhere. I did do a good job though, nice and neat when it was all done. Cleaned it really well and I was set. I woke up the next morning and now it's just a small scab, no swelling and doesn't hurt.

Ok, so did I infect myself by biting myself? I know you can get diseases from dogs, cats, other animals, but I didn't think you could get it from youself, lol. Well my friends thought this was kind of strange, so I figured I'd see what you guys had to say about it.

I read somewhere that the human mouth is one of the dirtiest things on the human body. I'm pretty sure you could get an infection from biting yourself. Why don't you try pulling your hair out instead?

Indeed, you certainly can get an infection from your own mouth. Most evil germs that you ingest are destroyed before getting into your system due to the acid in your stomach... biting yourself allows it directly in without such a buffer...

Your skin and mouth are crawling with bacteria.

Some of that bacteria is good, some of it is bad.

Your skin acts as a barrier against the bacteria. Once your skin is cut, the bacteria on your skin or on whatever broke your skin can get inside the barrier.

It doesn't matter if your mouth was sterile: simply breaking the skin can cause an infection, from the bacteria on the skin itself.

Ahhhh - I did not want to hear that! lol - Luckily though there is still not more redness or swelling. It wasn't bleeding too much when I first bit it, I guess that was the problem. When I cut out the bad spot with the razor it did bleed more and I cleaned it very well so I'm hoping I should be good. Thank you for the info though. Even though I get really freaked out whenever I hear anything like that, I still appreciate it.

I used to be like you describe. You might look into stress and anger management. Just a thought.

or find something to punch? on the rare occasions I get that worked up, I try to find something that I can whack harmlessly (to both me and it)

When I get pissed when I'm working on cars, i just run around my garage to my gigantic scrap-parts pile, grab a spent muffler or cylinder head or something and heave it as far as possible down my street. No infections, but make sure your neighbors arnt out.

Yes, some less destructive anger release is what you want. I find some muffled screaming or cursing or punching a pillow works good. Or doing something productive and physical, like working out.

Buy lots of bubble wrap. Use that when you're pissed. You'll like that little popping sound :D

full size punching bag
stress ball to carry around w/ you

DONT BITE YOURSELF, its not healthy nomatter how you go about it.

try biting into a sandwhich next time your anger gets the best of you. lol

I think you have a serious problem when you lose your temper enough to bite your finger and break the skin because you got your ass kicked at video games... seriously, you dont need a less destructive anger release, you need to control your anger... its just a fucking video game, calm down man

Oh man and here I am thinking I am the only one that does this. I have permanent bite marks on my wrist from all the times I lost my temper. I resorted to biting my wrists because I was getting really bad headaches from punching myself in the head and I was starting to have problems in my knee from all the times I would punch myslef in the knee/thigh region. Last night I put a Xbox controller through my 53" TV and this morning I smashed my remote to my receiver. It's this fucking Xbox game I have been playing so I took it out and made my girlfriend hold onto it for me so I wouldn't play it.

Haha also a couple years back I went to the mall with my friends and picked up Gameday 98 for the Playstation. We sat down to play and we didnt even get half way through the game before I got up from my seat, opened the console, and proceeded to crack the CD in half. My friends all just sat there with this look of disbelief on their faces. It's fucking sad, really. I need help. :(

seriously you do... you think its funny you destroyed a 53" tv because you couldnt beat a game... I think if someone makes you mad at the wrong time they are going to be in a world of hurt... you should get some anger management help
