A taxing question?

OK Im trying to claim myself as a dependant but when I goto file it says that the dependants social security number can't be the same as the filers. How do i claim myself as dependant then...?

Thanks.

I don't think you can claim yourself as a dependant. You're not a dependant, you're the taxpayer. I could be wrong about this, as IANAA (I Am Not An Accountant).

ratbastid is correct. You are the taxpayer, not a dependent of the taxpayer. You will get the 3400 deduction for yourself, but you can not take an additional 1000 credit for yourself.

Yeah stop and think about it for a second. Everyone has to have a SSN, you, your dependants (sp?) thats how the IRS keeps track of these things. Else your parents might claim you!

I kept reading everywhere and my co workers were telling me that I could take my self as a dependant but they explained it now as it's already taken out just by you filing or somthing. I don't know. My boss took my W2 home and figured the real reason im not getting anywhere near as much back this year as i did last was that I made just too much money. I made roughly 15,000 and they took out a little over 1000 and Im getting about 320 back.

You get to claim an exemption for yourself ($3,100), only if you're not claimed as a dependent on someone else's returns (eg, your parents). That plus the standard deduction will take most of your taxable income away if you only made $15k.

I'd say his calculated refund is roughly correct, once you figure his standard deduction and exemption would drop him into the 10% tax bracket. Taxes, gotta love 'em

He could look into dropping his refund into a roth, getting the 50% credit, and then pulling the roth contributions out the next day.

That just smacks of abuse, and is sure to be closed up soon.
