I owe money to the employer I haven't seen in four months.

I worked for a company for a few months doing website updates and created a couple of sales brochures, correspondence and worked a trade show along with a few other tasks. The owner does not have the best business sense. It took weeks occasionally to get paid and Brendan, a co-worker had to quite because he was working full time without getting paid as Rob couldn't get funds from the investor until months later. I did some work in November and December for around $400. Rob, who sells Corbeau products, offered me a pair of Corbeau seats at cost in exchange for work so I agreed. In December they arrived and I went to pick them up, rob had found out that his investor had funds tied up right now and was short on cash flow so he wanted me to pay the difference between the seats and what he owed me. Me, not planning for that expense, around $350, offered to pay $150 when my credit car rolled over in the middle of the month and work off the rest. He agreed to that but was heading down to Vegas to go to the Consumer Electronics Expo so I waited to hear from him when he was back and I heard nothing. I didn't know what was going on with the company and already had a full time job didn't follow up on it and felt that Rob would contact me if he need / could afford for me to do some more work and forgot about it for the last four months. The other day I found out that rob has been telling people that I still owe him money yet has not contacted me about it for the last four months.

Now, I am not sure how to handle the situation. I could call him up or go by the warehouse/office to find out what he wants to do as I would be willing to honor our original agreement but I have the feeling he will just want the cash by this time or should I leave it up to him to contact me still? If he is complaining to people I owe him money why hasn't he asked me to come in? I also think that it would be the employer’s responsibility to arrange with his employees what he would like done and when meetings should take place? Any advice or suggestions?

Make the first step. Try to show this guy that you are a man of your word. It kinda sucks that this guy is bad mouthing you when all he had to do was pick up the phone. But you should step up to the plate and try to take care of it yourself. You are the one that owes him...

Do what bparker says, and tell this jerk (he's way more unreliable with paying money out) that you do not appreciate him slandering you when he made no effort to contact you, and that his track record is way worse than yours.

if you took the seats, then you are obligated to work it out. you never really said if you did. Now if you didn't take them he is just being an ass.

Just give him a call and act civil. Most people change their tunes after they realize that you aren't the bad guy they have been blaming. If it continues after you resolve it, then break out the gloves (so to speak).

I did take the seats. I will contact him after iv got another paycheck in the back so I can give him the $150 without straining my budget. I just find the whole situation silly and to be honest iv only really thought about it once in the last few months up until this last weekend. It will be nice to get it resolved though and out of the way but it is not like oweing money to your buddy who you can just call up and resolve, I mean, this is supposed to be the employer / employe relationship.
