Can't believe I'm posting this, Excessive Gas Problem!
Ok, being a mature and centered person I am well prepared for the ribbing I am bound to recieve on this, but let he who is without fart cast the first stone! Anyhoo, this is a real question and a real problem. I produce gas like nobody's business! It really is amazing and aggravating. It also makes my fiance' crazy and there have been a few mild verbal altercations over it. It seems like I need to break wind all the time! I try holding it in and/or retreating to another room but the frequency of my need often makes this impossible. Plus sometimes I don't even feel it coming on, just suddenly out it goes much to my girls displeasure. She has a hard time believing I don't know its coming and do it on purpose but I truly do try to hold back........Ok, if you're done laughing for a moment I'll continue. I've tried all sorts of things. Here is a bit of info. I'm very fit, work out regularly and eat a basic, somewhat bland diet. Mostly baked chicken breast and spinach. Oatmeal for breakfast, a little brown rice and salads between meals. I sometimes have red meat in the form of steaks or roast beef and snack on tuna. I use a whey protein powder and take a daily mulitvitamin and fish oil. I stay away from dairy, no beans, no Chili dogs or any of the traditional gas producing foods. I used to eat cheese but cut that out hoping it would help but to no avail. Ive tried several over the counter anti-gas pills, even using double or triple the recc. dosage but its like bricks in the Grand Canyon. This has been going on for a long time, it was only after moving in with the girl that I realised the seriousness of the problem. Believe me, she points it out so there is no doubt about how offensive she finds it. I agree its rude to do but I really can't help it and after having tried everything I can think of I am desperate for some suggestions. My next step is to talk to a doctor but I thought what the hey, I'm a glutton for punishment, I'll let the TFPers toss it around a bit. I thought about posting this on the Tilted Living forum, (it seems to see more traffic) but it seemed to be a Health issue. Any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated, any jokes will be tolerated, I mean really sometimes ya just gotta.

First off, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, so my suggestion is to seek medical advice. It's possible you have an allergy to something you are eating, and this is causing the problem.
Second, most of us won't be making fun of a problem, but if that's what you are looking for, maybe a post in tilted humor? |
Nah, not really looking for jokes as it is a real and upsetting problem but just prematurely letting people off the hook if they couldn't resist.

Sounds like absorbentishe is on the right track. This could very well be an allergy or lactose intolerance. When you don't have the enzymes in your digestive system to properly digest milk or other foods then you can end up with the food basically just sitting and fermenting, causing gases to build up from the fermentation process. My first suggestion would be to watch what it is you are eating and when you have the most trouble. You could try cutting out dairy from your diet for a couple days and see if you get any relief. You could also try removing other things from your diet one at a time and waiting a couple days between each to see if something gives you relief. Here I give a fairly brief list of the foods to eliminate.
There are a few foods that are notorious for specifically causing gas. Lots of fiber can contribute, beans, oatmeal and such. The best person to help you find out why you have this problem is to talk to your Dr. Until you talk to him you could check out the allergy avenue. If nothing else just watch what you are eating as that may be some of the things that the Dr would want to know first anyway. |
You take whey protein? Dude, I take whey protein and it gives me a LOT of gas about 3-5 hours after I drink it, routinely. I know it's the whey protein that causes my gas because on days where I don't have any protein I am perfectly fine.
I would stop taking whey protein for a few days and see what happens. Personally I take the protein at night now so I don't have the gas while I'm in class (wow a rhyme). |
How ironic. That sounds like me right now. I'm gassy all over the place because I eat that fake sugar stuff. That's what I'm thinking it is.
Anyway, I don't have much to help with. You seem to have a healthy diet (my boyfriend is gassy because he is either sick or eats a ton of junk food), so I'm thinking that you should go with the person that posted above me! |
too many dairy products. You may have some form of lactose intolerance. My husband is the same way. He can only handle a little amount of dairy/milk products a day, or it's fart-city.

get rid of the spinach... i've heard that asparagus (specifically) and dark greens in genral are real gas producers... since you said you don't eat dairy, i can't imagine it being lactose intolerance...

I just re-read things again. You mentioned the Oatmeal. That does it for hubby. He won't eat Oatmeal on a day he has to work cause it's the afterburners all day long if he does.

i think it's safe to say most foods you eat will have gastrointestinal aftereffects to some people. If you are really having a problem, do to a freakin doctor, a proctologist, if there is one available. He's studied asses for 4 years, which i'm sure is more than everyone here on TFP combined, unless some of the posters are proctologists themselves.

Thanks for all the replies, I don't eat much, (Really any) Dairy but the Whey Protein and the brand I buy is supposed to be Lactose Free. I'll try laying off it a few days though to see if it helps. I use Splenda as well so I suppose that or the Spinach could be a problem as well. The oatmeal thing surprises me, that seems like such a bland innoucous meal, I'll give that a shot as well. Next time I go to the Doctor I'll see what he reccomends. Again, I really apprecieat all the suggestions, thanks.

Dude.... see a doctor. Everyone is suggesting you stop all the fiber foods, which your colon needs to stay healthy. Cut the fiber and catch colon cancer - period. And if it's green, it's usually good for you unless you have some sort of allergy!!

okay, i'd say it's the splenda... that stuff recks my digestive tract, even when i just eat a little. and that's one of the listed side effects of eating it.
