Love-Handle Busting
I'm doing about 30 sit-ups a day. Any other advice?

Before everybody else says it,
Work on a healthy diet, because there is no way to "spot-reduce" fat. Besides, if you have love handles, you probably have overall fat that needs rid of anyway. If you really want to work on the muscle underneath the love handles, these are called the obliques. There's many things you can do for them. Side crunches are a start. |

Another excercise that I like to do for the obliques is the Side Bend. You hold a dumbbell in one hand with your arm straight down, bend your waist to the opposite side, then bend on the side holding the dumbbell, lowering it to your knee, then repeat. You can see it here |
Everyone else summed it up pretty well however, one thing in general about ab exercises

i'd actually recommend staying away from doing oblique excercises until you get your body fat % way down. doing those excercises will just build more muscle there which will push the fat out farther. do cardio and dieting. weight lifting will help too... but don't focus just on obliques

you want and need strong abs though, so I disagree with not working out your abs even if you are fat. Abs are key for a lot of cardio stuff, too.

i respectfully disagree with winsecure...
working and toning any of your ab muscles will work to contain and trim your waistline. many times when you see people with "pooching" stomachs, their abdominal wall isn't strong/toned enough to make it as flat as it could be. ' also, working out the trunk of your body will help you in every exercise and sport you play. if it will increase your fitness, if it will make you more healthy... i think that is reason enough to do it. |
There's no way to spot-reduce fat. This is the fallacy that drives the sales of those Thighmaster machines. There is no way to spot-reduce the fats around the thighs by exercising the adductor/abductor muscles.
You can only reduce overall body fat through a combination of diet and exercise. Different people tend to store fats at different areas of the body. It could be that the waist is the first area that gains fat, and the last area to lose fat for you. Definitely continue doing ab exercises. When you finally lose your body fat, it'll be nice to have a nice set of abs underneath!! I agree that situps are not the best way. Crunches and legraises are target the abs much better. |
Training your the muscles underneath your handles, with weights, will only make your handles look larger(bulking up the muscles underneath) unless you loose a lot of body fat.
