Breathing troubles

My nose is always clogged up, even when it's summer time. As a result, i am always getting winded and end up having to breathe through my mouth and get tired too fast. It feels like my nostrals just arent taking in enough air, and one is 90% clogged up. I went to a free doctor in school, and he couldn't find anything wrong. Any ideas as to what i can be or what I could do??

First things first. Go and see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat)specialist to get tested. If you're like me you're allergic to just about everything. I couldn't breathe a day in my life until I moved out of Connecticut.

They may also send you off to have a catscan. Its quite possible that you may have a deviated septum, and its the actual shape of your nose/bone that is causing restriction. I also have this problem due to breaking my nose when I was younger, and the bone healed thicker in certain areas, causing irregularities.

Come to think of it, the college doctor did say that I have a shaped nose like it was broken. But it enver has been. He told me a lot of people have that. It didn;t sound like that was the reason for the clogginess. I'll try and see an ENT.

I am very similar. My nose always gets clogged at weird times, but weve pinpointed it to mild allergies. Either way, clogged or not if I'm even semi active (walking a a decent pace) I have to resort to mouth breathing. I'm not out of breath, but I get the same feeling like my nose isn't allowing enough air through. Annoying, but I just assumed it was my genetics. Some people are mouth breathers, some aren't. I figured that was why...I wonder if it goes deeper..hmm.

I don't know if that's your whole problem. Getting winded, i.e. short of breath, really wouldn't be any more likely if you were a mouth breather. If I had to guess, I would say allergies could be your problem, and maybe a little effect in your lungs too. That would more readily explain the windedness. You don't necessarily have to be a "wheezer" to be symptomatic if asthma.

Your doc could do a quick check and let you know.

Nose clogged= obstruction. The obstruction is either swollen tissue or polyps due to allergies, or a deviated septum. Exam and CT scan should tell you. Swollen tissue and polyps are easily treated with a prescription nasally inhaled steroid and deviated septum needs surgery.

You most likely have some kind of allergic rhinnitis. You haven't specified enough information, so my best guess with limited info is allergies. Of course you may have some underlying bronchospasms leading to difficulty breathing, but you would have like been diagnosed with asthma. Other causes of upper airway congestion include nasal ployps, enlarged adenoids, tonsils, abnormal nasal anatomy. I would start with a trial of claritin, or other OTC anti-histamine. If that doesn't work, consider ENT visit who will hopefully then work you up.

Saline spray sometimes helps my stuffy nose in the winter since my sinuses get extra dried out with the dry air. During summer I take Claritan and avoid the stuffiness most of the time. I would agree that going to see an ENT specialist is your best bet. The Saline spray won't hurt either.
