Sarcasm the double edged sword
I'm not person who takes sarcasm very well. I always seem to take sarcasm seriously resulting in me getting offended and the other person usually getting annoyed that I didn't understand the sarcasm. Regular joking around I can take. Then when I try to be sarcastic, people take me seriously and get offended. Is there any point to sarcasm?

Of course not
j/k. I think its a combination of two things, the first being a way of telling a person that you're fed up with their stupid ideas, and the second, which applies to me at least 15 times daily, is just to be a smartass. |
Sarcasm can range from obnoxious to funny as hell. I prefer to use it for humor but it can be taken completely wrong sometimes.
Here's a thread about sarcasm and it being taken wrong if you're interested: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...hlight=sarcasm |

I think you answered your own question. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. |
Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit...
and being the lowest form of life, I LOVE it. It's the lazy man's joke. |
Sarcasm is irony with a little meanness thrown in. I'm all about irony, and, though I do try, I am not a very nice person, so sarcasm gets through sometimes. Is there a point? Sure, there's that moment of indescision and delicious confusion while the target figures out that you mean exactly the opposite of what you just said, or, sometimes, in an occasion of hyperbole, as in:
"Got a little cold there?" "No, I have a pet Amazonian nose gecko. Do I look like I have a runny nose? Damn! I'm gonna have to nosebreak the little devil pretty soon. Excuse me while I wipe." |
Ahhh one of my few talents. Gotten me in trouble a few times. As far as a point to it, I think in one resepect to be mean or to hurt feelings if you are in an argument. If just in normal conversation then just as a tool of humor, base humor but humor none the less.<p>Yeah right.

Sarcasm is supposed to make the victim? realize that what they're saying or doing is silly or stupid or making them seem like an ass. That's exactly why people who get it react so strongly. Most people don't like being called silly, stupid, or asslike. Always try to remember that the sarcastic person is trying to couch it in a joke. They're trying to soften the blow instead of calling you an ass. Be thankful, and point it out when friends get pissed at your sarcasm.

Irony, when used judiciously, is the spice of life.
Sarcasm is the drink to wash it down... |
Sarcasm is the artist's tool my friend. Not only is my family made of sarcastic idoits but my mother is the most sarcastic person anyone will ever meet. My father also... I love being sarcastic because, well i'm a jerk... But really, sarcasm is a way to make people angry, smile, laugh and cry... when you are a jerk. It gets the point acrossed.

If theres anything I'm ever good at. It's sarcasm. I don't know how I started or when, but as far as I can remember, I'm always a sarcastic jack ass. Most of the time, I do it for pure humor, and to answer a person's stupid question without telling them its stupid.
"Hey what you doing here?" "Hmm...lets see, this is my friend's house, I'm gamming with my friend, so..I'm guessing what I'm doing is called 'hanging...out' with my friend?" But then when they be sarcastic about your sarcastic remark, which happens with a friend of mine, its not very fun....... |
Sarcasm is definetly NOT the lowest form of humor, and it takes a sharp wit to pick up on it. Ok maybe not, but people that don't get it are the best. You can take one sarcastic comment and turn it into a 20 minute arguement about how fucking stupid they are. Or you could be a nice guy and not use sarcasm but rarely, which is no fun. Yay.

Tact if for those not witty enough to be sarcastic, therefore sarcasm is for those with some intellegence who are either trying to make a clever joke or trying to insult someone of lesser intellegence/wit.
I love being sarcastic, even if it does get me in trouble (only by those that don't get it, i might add) It's also great having friends that are as sarcastic as me. |
I love sarcasm, and I've very good at catchin' sarcasm as well. My friends do the same, so that's always fun.
