Futons
How long should a Futon mattress be used before throwing it out?
I've used mine for about 4 years now and it was originally passed down to me. I think its in its 13th year of use. Time to get a new one? Are there different types of futon mattresses out there?

Generally the cotton mat will degrade in about five years, by this time it is also usually infested with dust mites and can cause allergies. With the foam , or hybrid versions. Use it till it hurts.

I've had mine for about 10-12 years and the matress is a flat hunk of rock now. I've got about nine foam pads on it to make it even sleep-on-able.
Get a new one. Or you can even get a normal matress to fit on the futon frame... that's what I'm gonna do.

You can get some really good new futon matresses for good prices now days! Go somewhere that specializes in futons and they're hook you up. If I had the money I would have gotten the space foam one... but I have a 10 inch thick matress on my futon and I love it!

I don't know how long they last- we just got a futon couch and futon bunk bed last year. The couch has almost what's like a down-mattress. At first we liked it, but it gets pretty flat and uncomfortable. We have a double-filled (i don't remember the exact terms for these) mattress on the bunk futon and is very comfy.
So I recommend, if you get a new one, to get the really thick (double or triple) mattress. Not the foam, down-like one. They'll go flat rather guickly. |

let me guess... you're a male between the ages of 18 and 30 and you've convienced yourself that a futon is JUST LIKE a bed. in fact is is a bed, people in japan sleep only on futons and they love it.
(there is a possibility that you're also a japan-o-phoile and maybe even female, in which case, fine, whatever, enjoy your nonmatress). let me clue you in. girls hate futons. they are not comfortable, they have no bounce and the're not attractive. (yeah i know some girl is going to come on here and tell us how she LOVES futons... whatever, she's the exception). this futon thing is hindering your sex life. get a matress. |

1) Futons are cheaper than a matress...
2) The Japanese change the contents of their futon's stuffing regularly (i.e. they don't sleep on them for 5 year or more). 3) Futons can fold up nicely when you don't have space. Futons are practical and cheap. My wife and I had one for years. She went through her first pregnancy on one... We both hated it at the end. Way too hard. But when out new baby slept with us it didn't have far to fall if he rolled out of the bed... When I finally got a job that payed a reasonable wage I surprised my wife with a new bed... Can I just say that we love... no LOVE our new bed. (now if we could just keep our new baby from rolling out...)

I've had my futon for <2 years...and the mattress is flat, uncomfortable, and lumpy. Of course, it's from Wal-Mart, and I didn't pay much at all for it. Still...I'm pretty pissed. That's why I'm giving it to my brother....he'll be starting college in a little more than a year, and I think he's going to trade this hunk-of-shit-futon for his double bed, which is barely four years old. Shh, don't tell Sabrina's brother that he's getting jipped.

I'm looking for getting a futon for the apartment I'm moving into soon, any thoughts on what to get? Metal/wood? any stores in particular that have nice futons? etc...
