What would you pay for a gym membership?

How much are you willing to pay for a gym membership?

CandleInTheDark 01-07-2004 09:55 AM

Less than CDN$ 30 a month, for a membership over six months.

yournamehere 01-07-2004 10:25 AM

I pay $35 / mo. (well - actually $37.80, with tax)
It's a "Sport" 24 Hour membership - includes cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, pool, basketball courts, etc. And it's good wherever I'm at - any city.

If I go 3 times a week, it's only about $3 per vistit - a bargain, IMO.

And the best thing is - where I usually go, even at 5:30 p.m., there's hardly ever a wait for any of the facilities.

Plan9Senior 01-07-2004 11:13 AM

I'd pay around 30 if I didn't already get a membership for free.

I figure, i'd be there at around 20 times a month. Use their weight equipment, pool, bball court, racquetball court, steam room, even get the opportunity to meet women of a higher caliber then those outside of the gym and to top it off I will look better by going consistantly... hell, all of that is worth the $1ish/day that it averages being :)

Sparhawk 01-07-2004 11:44 AM

42 bucks a month. And I go there almost every day, so lets say $1.50-$2 bucks per visit? Worth it when I look at the results.

bookerV 01-07-2004 12:26 PM

i pay $45 CAD / month. i go 4 - 6 times a week. its about the max that i would pay. definitely worth it though, the gym is very nice. lots of free weights and hammer strength equipment. tons of attractive ladies to keep my eyes busy. there is also a pool, co-ed hottub, and co-ed saunabut i have yet to use any of that. its just nice to have around.

Antagony 01-08-2004 09:32 AM

University gym, so I have no idea how much I pay for it as it is hidden somewhere deep within my student fees.

Nazggul 01-08-2004 10:00 AM

I have an old membership from 1989 at 24 Hour Fitness that I pay $14 a month for. I just can't let that rate go I've had it so long, and ya never know when it will come in handy again. :) However, the gym I frequent is Sports Club LA, mostly for their pool facilities. That's about $100 a month.

cliv 01-09-2004 03:34 PM

I pay $49 / month and it includes weights, cardio, and most classes. That's the average price in my area. I could probably find someplace that is lower cost, but this gym is 1/4 mile from my house.

Rodney 01-09-2004 04:35 PM

I pay about $350 for the year. I get a discount because I pay in a lump sum. It's a quality basic gym, with "cardio theatre" (switchable TVs and CD players that play audio through to jacks in the cardio machines) but no classes. Fine by me, I'm mostly lifting. I'd pay a little more if need be, but I'd only pay substantially more if the gym included something extra I could use, like a pool or free yoga/tai chi classes.

forseti-6 01-10-2004 10:49 AM

I pay about $100 a month for New York Sports club. There are other clubs around here that are slightly cheaper, but none of them have the diversity of equipment that NYSC has. Plus NYSC constantly upgrades equipment, which I like.

thingstodo 01-11-2004 12:13 PM

I pay $85/month for my wife and me at Lifetime Fitness. It has everything and includes towels, locks on lockers, etc.

Jadey 01-11-2004 09:08 PM

I pay $37 per month for full membership (that inlcudes pool access and a permanent locker so I can leave stuff overnite) Also, it allows me full access to Ultimate Fitness' both Quad City locations in Bettendorf, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois. This used to come in real handy becuase the Iowa location is just a couple miles from work and on the other side of the Mississippi River, the Illinois locale was close to home.

quadro2000 01-12-2004 12:27 PM

NYC is unreal. The cheapest I've seen gym rates has been around $70 a month.

magua 01-12-2004 07:35 PM

I pay $17 / month for a Bally's Sports Club pass -- just about any Bally's, anywhere in the country. That's pretty cheap, considering I'm in the big city -- most other gyms are $70 / mo easy.

The downside (and if I'd been wiser years ago) was the _huge_ ($2000? Probably more) signup costs. I've been at it four years now, so it's really paid for itself, but I can only imagine how screwed some of the New Year Resolution Regulars feel come February.

saru 01-16-2004 11:46 AM

about $65 /month, which is pretty much average for where I live. From responses above I would guess this is pretty usual in big cities.

Parker 01-23-2004 10:26 AM

I paid $270 for a year for Gold's Gym. The nice thing about Gold's Gym is that you can get a free travel pass and work out anywhere in the world where they have a Gold's Gym, which is pretty much everywhere.

seizei 01-25-2004 01:32 AM

$25 CAD for 4 months ;) although it's a university facility and it sucks big time... /shrug... at least I'm amused by the Computer Science students doing lat pulldowns while wearing jeans and a sweater!!

Finchie 01-31-2004 12:17 PM

I'm currently paying $54/month for my gym. It includes classes, showers, jacuzzi, etc. The only thing that sucks is that it's a student membership, so there are certain busy hours when I can't go. The full membership is about $70, which I would never pay.

Bowlcut 01-31-2004 05:37 PM

im paying 35 a month for golds. 3 gyms in this town all i can go to. pretty much everything you need. ive only been to one tho. but with their "ambassidors" membership you can make it cheaper for everyone you referre. so it could go down to 19.99 but i doubt ill get that. got 2 friends going so its going to be down to 30. but golds isnt bad, love the cardio theater, dvd player and projector to a huge screen where you do your cardio, makes it go alot faster thats for sure

StephenSa 02-05-2004 02:02 PM

I pay 35.00 a month and they waived the $150 membership fee plus no contracts. Its a great gym a lot of competitive bodybuilders work out there, not too crowded and plenty of iron and steel. Its near my work so I can work out at lunch or at the end of the day. I'd like to join another gym near my home but they have a $200 membership fee plus a mandatory contract and I just can't wrap my head around paying the membership fee. I don't mind the montly fee of $45.00 and I can deal with the contract but $200 so they can punch my name into their computer? Can't do it.

ForgottenKnight 02-07-2004 03:23 PM

None, as far as extra money that I have to spend. Membership to the rec center on campus is included in my tuition and fees. That's the only gym I need :).

gorilla 02-10-2004 08:12 PM

I pay $19 a month. Includes weight lifting, gymnasium, pool facility, and classes.

EVIDENT 05-03-2004 10:13 PM

I was gonna be a smart ass and say I get it for free...

Then I thought well I have an athletics fee of about 150 every five months... ah crap that's $30 a month like everyone else ;)

Yeah, but how much is your athletic fee? See my post above.

Bobaphat 05-03-2004 11:28 PM

I used to pay $40 US, but I think that is boarderline unreasonable unless you area complete gym rat. I have a nice set up at home so right now I don't go to a gym. I think that if a good gym offered me a membership at $20 per month, I might go back. There are some things you just can't do at home and I miss doing them

miko 05-04-2004 06:00 AM

I pay $65 at a private gym, it's brand new, all the best equipment, tons of classes included in the price... it's awesome. But that is with an early sign-up discount. I think the normal price is around $75.

25 Canadian a month..
Includes weight gym, pool, 2 basketball gyms, an indoor and outdoor track...a football field if you want to play football I guess..

It's a small gym, but Im in a small town..during the winter it can get pretty backed, but from may to october it's almost empty at the right time of day (early morning, after supper)...

try London: £60-£75 per month... (USD: $107 - £134)

I'm just about to join up, its a bloody rip off, but then do I really want to go running in freezing cold weather?

argh :(

digby 05-11-2004 12:33 PM

Alumni pass to my school runs me about $22 per month. Not bad when I consider that I'm there playing racquetball more nights than not.

raymondstereo 05-18-2004 12:07 PM

I pay $30 a month for full ammenities (pool, basketball courts, raquetball/squash courts, personal training, etc.) I also have access to two other gyms around town, but I don't ever need to use them. It's a really good deal, considering it's never busy in the slightest at the times I go.
