RANT- just got robbed
 

ARGH!!!
While I was on my way home, I get a call from my mom that my house was broken into. My family was only away for 2 hours at my grandmother's house for dinner. They broke into my rear window into my brother's room. They stole a shit load of electronics and computer stuff. It will take over $10,000 to replace what was taken. My family is still looking over what was taken or not. My mom may have also lost some jewelry.
This is the second home of ours that has been broken into. Once when we lived in Philadelphia, and now. We live in a quiet suburb afew miles out of Philly.
I just hope they catch this/these scum bag. My house was the 5th one to be hit in the area by them. I also hope home insurance will pay for this.

Sorry to hear this - what an awful thing to have to go through!

Not to detract from your misery, but to put it in perspective, it could be worse:

My boss's son was walking home from work at night through a usually safe neighborhood, when some guy jumped out of an alley and held a gun on him and demanded his wallet. He didn't have any money, so the guy took him to an ATM and made him try to withdraw some huge sum of money that exceeded his bank balance, so the ATM ate his card. The robber took him back down an alley and said "if I can't get anything out of you, you're at least going to give me a blow job." Which he did, at gunpoint.

So, it could be worse. Stuff is only stuff. You'll get it back. The worst part is the feeling of violation and the loss of safety and trust. I hope you get that back, too. Be grateful that your family is unharmed, and be extra loving to each other.

My parents house had an attempted robbery early this year. Their neighborhood is very safe, and you never hear of break ins ever. But I guess some jerk decided to try to break into my parents' house regardless. Luckily my parents were smart (I called them paranoid prior to the incident) and had an excellent alarm system installed. Police showed up at the house within 5 minutes, and the would-be robber fled, doing nothing but busting the door lock.

I had a friend who was robbed at gunpoint by a bunch of young kids in NYC. He was emotionally scarred from that event for weeks. Eight or nine months later, he killed himself (there were many other things involved, but I'm sure this event was just one reason he did it). This was also my only friend who has committed suicide.

So yes, as lurkette says, things could be (a LOT) worse.

I hope you relax and realize that only sentimental items are truly valuable. You'll find some way to move on. Everything electronic etc. can be replaced with time. You might take the opportunity to change your life's direction too (in a positive way).

omg that is so awful! It sickens me to think people would actually do that to someone. I would have bit the guys dick off or something, he'd be in too much pain to try and shoot me. Did they catch the guy who did it?

leet: No idea if it's even the right statistic that I'm thinking about, but I remember hearing that the average breakin, if not done by some professional (who, really, would probably be doing upper-upper-class neighborhoods anyway), it's a buncha teenagers in the same neighborhood as you. Given the recent string in your own neighborhood, and the 2 hour window of opportunity to rob you...

That sucks. I've had my car broken into about 20 fuckin' times. It makes me sick to even think that someone doesn't have the balls to get real job... the fact that they steal shit to feed their families and pay their bills. It's so fuckin' wrong.

The detectives also think its kids around the neighborhood. My house was the fifth one hit. The house next to mine was also hit on saturday morning! Worst thing is that I had an alarm system. It wasn't on since the battery was low on some of the sensors and we didn't bother turning it on. But even if we had it on, it wouldn't have worked since he just smashed through the window and never opened it.
Yes, it could have been worst, but I not only feel violated but also inadequate that I wasn't able to protect my own home from a bunch of thugs. All my friends know that if I had been home and they tried anything with me, they wouldn't be walking out, but carried out.

I am so sorry to hear what happened. It seems like misfortunes are a part of life regardless of how horrible it is. But it's important to realize that without our misfortunes, life wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable. Without darkness, light wouldn't be nearly as bright. Without pain our pleasures wouldn't be as appealing. I just hope that they catch the bastard, and I'm sorry that this has happened to you. Karma will catch up to him/her.

update:
There have been a total of 7 homes hit this week. 5 of them were on my block, and my block isn't big. I was just told by the police that they are going to send officers into the wooded area behind my block to patrol tonight. Hopefully these thugs try tonight and get caught.

Those people make me sick too. Especially when they try to justify it by saying "I was just trying to take care of my family, what's wrong with that"

just a word of advice, be warned they may make a return trip. think about it, $10,000 worth of electronics and stuff rarely goes uninsured these days, if they have half a brain between them they'll know in a few weeks you'll have brand new goods for them to come back and steal.

my mate had his house broken into, computers and dvd's stolen. just after a month later, they got done again - all the new stuff stolen.

I am already taking precautions. I am getting my alarm system worked on tomorrow. I've also told my family what to do in case anything happens and everyone is home.

I always arrange my place so there's nothing visible from outside that'd be worth stealing. It works. I was away from one place for 3 months. The other 3 units in the building were broken into, but mine wasn't touched. My TV and CD player were left alone.

OTOH, my 10 year old car got broken into (again!) last May. It was a 10 fucking year old car! I found out later that it was a model that the car modders like to mess with. (sigh) They didn't manage to steal it, but they tried.

Thats what shotguns are for ;) Think long and hard before you decide to arm yourself, though--by bringing a firearm into a situation, you escalate it to a much more dangerous level.

Robbery makes you feel so violated. I had a car broken into years ago when I was at the end of a long business trip. They got every one of my suit pants but not the jackets. Unfortunately, the jackets were for suits so you couldn't match them up as sport coats. I had spent money and time building up the wardobe for work and had little money left. Plus, I rented and had no insurance coverage on auto contents - did get $200 from car insurance.

Another time my wife's jewlery was taken, we think by a freind of one of our kids. That was bad because some was from her grandmother.

But I agree with everyone else.... it could always be worse, especially if things were taken and not irreplaceables.

I once read a story like this about a female celebrity (non-US, I can't remember her name) who was forced to give a blow-job to someone who held her at gunpoint. She bit it off and he was forced to drop the gun and run to a hospital, where he was promptly caught. I wonder why more people don't do this. :D

1337haxor, sorry about your loss. At least you have insurance. Hopefully, they'll compensate you well. Hopefully, the thief will get caught one day and spend years in jail, or he'll just rob the wrong house and get shot. Cruel, but I have no sympathy for robbers.

No, for everyone. When you introduce a firearm into a situation, you cause the other party (in this case, the burglar) to become more desperate--he may decide to use any weapon he has where he otherwise may have not.

This isnt to say not to arm yourself if the need arises--I am merely warning you not to do it trivially.

Fuck 'em, I say. There is absolutely no telling what they want to do to you besides robbery. I'd rather take the cautious route and give them my money $0.50 at a time, in increments of 155 grains of lead, of course. Keep the change.
