Cod liver oil tablets
Hi all
A few years back I was involved in a car crash, nearly said goodbye to it all, but now I am all healed except for my right knee joint. No jogging on roads for me. My mum ( bless her) has got me cod liver oil tablets - I am serious ~ will I smell of fish ( as per garlic tablets), I do not eat Fish nor does my girlfriend,so it is quite an issue. ~Do they actually do any good for ligament tissue/ joints ( not spliff rolling jokes), these tablets are not cheap and I hope to live abit longer. ~ are there any alternatives? |
if i'm not mistaken, cod liver oil tablets are the same thing as fish oil, so i don't know if there is any joint benefit to them. maybe do a google search to see what's said. but fish oil is good for you either way. it contains omega 3's or omega 6 fatty acids (can't remember which), which are essential fatty acids that your body can't produce. fish oil is supposed to be very good for you, is great for your cholesterol (it either lowers your LDL or raises you HDL, both of which are good things), as well as being needed by your body.
the only alternatives i can think of are eating more fish, tuna, salmon, etc. |
I've taken cod liver oil tablets and sometimes they make my poop runny.

Any oil runs the chance of making your poop runny.
That said, I shudder to think of taking an oil tablet of any kind, much less fish oil. I guess I'm just not as health-oriented as some. |
bloodslick
it is to try and prevent my knee ligiment hurting ! The runny poop business is worrying though. |
It is supposed to be good for the joints, and alot of people (at least in europe) take it to help with arthritis.

Don't know if the fish oil can help joints, but you may want to try glucosamine/chondroiten tablets. Its the only supplement with medical studies supporting its role in improving joint pain (I believe it plays a role in thickening the joint synovial lining)

From what I know (student pharmacist here) fish oil is good for cholesterol, and that's all its been proven for. Cod liver oil I am unsure, but if you want joint pain help, I'd try Glucosamine/Chondroiten tablets. Go to your local wal-mart, Target, Walgreen's or whever and look for those. Osteo-bi-flex is a name brand of it, but just get the generic stuff, it works just as good. Herbal "supplements" can at times do more harm than good. People don;t know they're not regulated by the FDA under the same laws as drugs are since they are considered food supplements and not drugs... Thus they can be impure, and a lot of them are loaded with pesticides and heavy metals and other things that are generally harmful to your body.

My uncle takes cod liver oil every day and swears by it.
