How can I build these side muscles ??

Ok so Im a pretty toned guy everywhere else except for on my sides. My ribs are visible and Im not liking the way that looks at all. I was wondering if theres any exercises out there to where I can tone my sides up and put a little muscle on them so you won't beable to see the out lines of my ribs. It's not really that big of a deal I just think it's nasty looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Whenever I need ideas on how to work a certain body part I turn to: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm

It sounds like you want to work your lats so I'll direct you here:

Lats

I hope this is some help.

I first thought you meant your lats, but when I reread what you said, it sounds as if you are talking about the front/side of your body (since that is where the ribs are mostly visable).

The muscles that run down the sides of your stomach in a slanted direction are called the obliques. In order to build them you need to incorporate a new set of exercises into your stomach workout. While doing a crunch, twist your body to one side focusing on the oblique muscle, then repeat for the other side.

I think he is talking about the serratus.

Yes, twisting movements will hit the serratus muscles. If you want to add bulk, you'll need to use some weight while twisting. BUT, be very careful, you can really screw up your back if you use too much weight. You can do twisting cruches or bent over twists with a broom handle across your shoulders. You can also do standing side bends with a bar across your shoulders.

If you have a workout partner, you can do medicine ball passes. Sit on the floor, back to back, and pass a medicine ball, back and forth, in a circular fashion. Good luck!

Here are your Obliques shown here, I could have sworn you meant these:

As for your Serratus, here are a few exercises targed directly towards strengthening them:

Cable crunches

Ball rollout:

hope that helps.

Hmmm i didn't even though there was any muscle there *feels rib*

I have the same deal, i basically just hav rib cage there, i really don't mind it. Although i don't work out so much for the aesthetic purposes, so i am not sure what these muscles would actually do for you?

anyway, it's always interesting to find something out about your body :p

for the serratus and obliques, you're not gonna get a whole lot of size. the only people that really do get size there are hardcore bodybuilders and often that's with some help (wink wink).

lay on your side with your legs straight, one on top of the other, and push up with your arm, hold yourself up for a good 8 seconds or so, and then back down, repeat.
its like a sideways push up.
