Your Leagacy?

What would you want your leagacy to be. After you have gone, how would you like others to remember you. Would it just be friends and family, or would you like for many generations to know who you were?

My choice comes from a dream I once had:

I know it was set sometime in the future, I cannot be sure when. All I could guess at would be that it's at least 50 years past my natural lifespan.

I see a man walking along a street, and after walking for a few minutes, he stops at a building. Looking up the stairs at the building I can tell that it is a library. The man walks up the stairs and enters the building.

Once inside, he walks up to a computer terminal and begins searching through its database. After a few minutes, he stops and calls up an article, perhaps a book. As he's reading it, I try to read it also, except I can't. It's all jibberish to me. All except one thing, I see my name occur several times throughout the text.

After I woke up, I had a tremendus sense of self satisfaction.

prosequence 10-20-2003 06:21 PM

Friendship and warmth, I would like that to be my legacy. For it to passed on and remebered.

ForgottenKnight 10-20-2003 09:27 PM

My leagacy remains to be to be seen... it is a mystery... for those who knew me, they will remember intellegence, integratey, humor, and most importantly, true kindness as is rarely seen anymore on this earth. Whether I'll be known by only a select few, or by the entire world, remains to be seen. If I achieve in my lifelong dream/goal, then I will be remembered in the history books as one of the world's greatest astronauts.

lurkette 10-21-2003 06:00 AM

Interesting question. After you've answered it, the next question is "what are you doing to make this happen?"

I think about it on two different levels:

I'd like everyone who knew me - everyone I came in contact with - to be left knowing that I love them.

On a more global scale, I would love to be repsonsible in some way for a shift in peoples' attitudes - a greater awareness of the interrelatedness of all life on earth. I would love for the following sentiments to be internalized by a significant proportion of the world population:

- if one of us is chained, none of us is free
- do unto others as you would have them do unto you
- whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me
- love all people as though they were your only child

i think i like to give a lot, and i think i've always wanted to be a mother. i've never wanted to do anything that changes the world in the ways most people think of. i've never wanted to become a doctor and like cure cancer or anything like that, you know? but i've wanted to teach to everyone. i want to learn and learn and then pass that on, to my children as well as professionally. i think that would be my legacy. like maybe one of my students or children would change the world, and by doing so i would change the world. but seriously, we all change the world anyways. i mean by me not becoming a doctor maybe there will be some spot at med school and that kid who got in could cure cancer. or maybe i was in someone's way and because they were like a couple seconds late they missed a bus that proceeded to crash. and maybe that person, whose life i may have saved, went on to do some "great things". i just live my simple little life and hope that it will result in some good stuff. i don't think i care if i get credit, cause what does that really matter? i mean, you know what you did and you should take your own satisfaction in that. i don't know if i got off topic, i hope that made sense.

iktoweya 10-22-2003 12:12 PM

When i die i want a lot of people to say "Damn that guy really owed me a lot of money."

On a serious note though i want to be responsible for inventing something. more than likely likely it will be electronic. And it will start a whole new type of living as we know it. now will it happen??? maybe im sure hoping. we'll see

ARTelevision 10-23-2003 03:44 AM

I don't want to be remembered. I would prefer that people forget I ever existed and go on with their lives - remembering all the other people who have died - because that's the way people are. I can't really change that.

twotimesadingo 10-23-2003 07:28 PM

the first image my mind conjured up in answer to this question was a picture of Magus -- you know, from Chrono Trigger.

i guess i'd most like to be remembered as the enigmatic figure who tried to do his best. like Magus, my motives may never be fully understood, but (i hope) my influence is undeniable.

mirevolver 10-31-2003 11:43 PM

All very interesting.

As for my dream, I wish I had more information on why the man looked me up, but I guess that finding out will be what brings fun to my life.

justin218 11-01-2003 12:50 PM

I'd like be known someday as someone who helped in some accomplishment that advanced mankind, like the space program did or something like that. but who knows.

JimmyTheHutt 11-05-2003 11:32 PM

This is kind of sad...

I want to be story used to frighten children.

I.E.
"Don't do x or JIMMY will get you!"

I like being the bad guy.

(I was voted most likely to be the basis for a slasher villain in high school)

Doos 11-06-2003 02:06 AM

As a great friend and a fun person to be with.

Also intend publishing a few stuff (scientific papers) so would like to be referenced often and be thought of thus by students *awe struck* "That Doos sure knew his stuff"

SabrinaFair 11-06-2003 08:29 AM

I would be more than content if at the end of my life, those who care about me can say, "Here's to Sabrina. She gave us love and laughter." That's more than enough for me.

numist 11-06-2003 10:18 AM

I would like those who knew me in life to have been impacted by my life, not my death.

As long as I am remembered in some good way, and as long as I made a positive difference in people's lives, I will be satisfied.

WarWagon 11-06-2003 12:36 PM

I'd like to be remembered for what I do at the track, something to be passed around when the buds down at the garage are having a couple beers late at night.

Sparhawk 11-06-2003 03:36 PM

I want to make a difference. I don't yet know how that's going to manifest itself, as I still have some growing up to do, but we'll see, won't we...

lordjeebus 11-06-2003 09:39 PM

I'm not especially concerned about my legacy -- I won't be around to know about it.

I would like to respected for what I have done today.

Shades 11-08-2003 01:11 AM

I would like to have "Went back into the blaze for one more orphan." on my tombstone. I definitely do not want "Wouldn't stop eating so died from being a lard ass." which apparently most of my fellow Americans will get.

rogue49 11-08-2003 07:44 AM

In all seriousness
I want to win the Nobel Prize for Physics.

In explaining a cognitive model for the Universal Dimensions,
introducing a few more, and defining them
And in doing so, unify General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics,
and give a legitimate explaination for the Grand Unified Theory.

I want centuries from now students bitchin'... "Why do we have to study this guy?" ;)

tikki 11-08-2003 06:38 PM

Holy cow, how do you know that's a good thing? He could be reading "Forensic History of Spontaneous Human Combustion Cases -- 2003."

Stiltzkin 11-10-2003 05:33 PM

I would like to be remembered as someone who was able to spell words like "legacy" properly. Heh.

Since the real answer to this question only makes sense to me, I will spare it, and instead will post a silly answer:

I would like for monuments to be erected in my honor. The skies will be littered with large television screens and scrolling marquees on commercial airplanes celebrating my life with such inspiration messages as "Hail Stilltzkin!" and "Long Live Stiltzkin's Memory!" and "In Stiltzkin We Trust", each time of course replacing "Stiltzkin" with my real name... I will write a constitution on my own, a document detailing every aspect of government, and it will be put into effect in every government all around the world. Weekends will be extended to three days, the new day being Stiltzkin day, which will be reserved to contemplate and celebrate my life. There will be showers of wine in all the streets, and naked women running up and down the streets, wild monkey sex on roof tops. Yeah. It'll be crazy. Okay, I think I'm done.

jbrooks544 11-11-2003 06:54 PM

Honestly, I want to leave the legacy of helping put some responsibility and capacity for love and fun in the hearts of my children. I inherited this from my parents and I only hope to pass it on.

Beyond that, I will help to temporarily concentrate some useful organic compounds that may help other organisms feed for a short while...

So, to sum up - love my kids and family and then become worm food and fertilizer. WOOHOO!

taliendo 11-15-2003 12:30 AM

simple. Its my funeral and all the people are saying, "damn, that was some tasty bar-b-que!"

j03th3j3w 11-15-2003 02:01 AM

i have thought of this many times... and i have never been able to come up with a suitable answer.. or an answer that works for me... i guess.. leaving a legacy is like.. leaving this world with the understanding that my family and my name will forever continue... that is my legacy... so to speak!

viejo gringo 11-16-2003 08:11 PM

I want to be remembered as "that guy who could fix everything but a broken heart"----of coarse being remembered as a great lover with a great tool would be nice...:D

dragon2fire 11-17-2003 01:01 PM

That doesn't sound odd at all. That sounds selfless and very modest. Quite admirable actually.
I would like to be remembered as a loyal friend, loving wife and mother and lots of fun. If my actions impact the world around me, that's a bonus.:suave:

I'm not so sure it's selfless OR modest. I think it depends how you define yourself. Personally, as an artist, I'd be far happier if people remembered my work than any detail of my private life... partly because it is an expression of self. I think the things we're most proud of are the things we'd want people to remember. Whether it's work, family or some kind of moral victory. Only one person so far has said they don't want to be remembered at all, and I noticed no one said THAT was admirably modest...

redravin40 11-29-2003 08:19 AM

I think the small legacy I have will come from my kids.
The mistakes I make and any good I have done affect them in a personal way.
They will pass those thoughts and ideas on to their kids even it's as things that they don't like.
When I was a kid I had grand dreams of influencing the lives of thousands now I am happy with just a handful.

World's King 11-29-2003 01:58 PM

"Dude, that guy had great clothes."

rogue49 11-29-2003 05:43 PM

And now with a bit of sarcasm.

On my gravestone,
"Damn, that boy could talk" ;)

Sho Nuff 12-01-2003 01:53 PM

I want my descendents to be among the last left on this planet. I want my legacy to be that of survival.

bobw 12-01-2003 07:11 PM

Everybody knew who he was, but most didn't know his name...

isis 12-01-2003 09:40 PM

I always thought it'd be pretty cool to have a theory or something, then your name is always remembered, like Mendel or something like that. Realistically, I'm not probably going to discover anything profound .. but I can always dream.

And of course, my legacy will lie in my children. They will possess (well, maybe.. damn genetics) my curly hair, my eyes, etc. Hopefully, they will also possess my stunning good looks and charm ;)

analog 12-08-2003 12:10 AM

I want to leave a legacy of great cinema... movies that cause you to think, or laugh, or cry... movies that are remembered as keystones... movies people will randomly bring up or quote in idle conversation. Such are my dreams...

And, on my headstone: "Analog was not allowed to write his own epitaph, as there is not enough stone in all the world to fit what he'd put. (he's a bit long-winded at times) Thank You."

amonkie 12-08-2003 12:26 AM

I'm a behind the scenes kind of person, so just knowing I was part of something great, even without being acknowledged for it, would be plenty for me. I also can't wait to have my kids and teach them the way the world ought to run.
