Everybody's doin' it!
What's the story with everybody trying to be non-conforming these days by doing the same non-conforming things, be it mode of dress or method of expression or anything?
|
What is normal and what is "non-conformist change, however it is normal for the group of non-conformists to all look the same. There is always a group of "non-conformists" running around, and they always seems to look alike. Pretty funny if you ask me.

:) same thing as when alternative music wasn't alternative anymore :)

It's the old joke about "I'm an individual, just like everyone else".
If you like a look, do it, but don't claim that you are different due to it. I didn't invent jean shorts and a t-shirt, but that's what I wear. I don't go around saying that I'm trying to be independent, it's just what I like. If more people did that, this would be a better (and likely more creative) world. |
Nothing new about this. Most "hippies" in the 60's qualified as this, ie: only weekend copycat hippies. How is it rebellious to dress like a hobo and have a tacklebox face and tatoos if everyone else is doing it too? News flash! it isn't! It takes more guts to just be classy, independant and shun the empty consumerism generated phoney ghetto "style". end rant.

i don't think the point is how other people perceive someone is being rebellious. it's how the person that is dressing like that perceives themselves. at the time they go though a change where they start dressing "to be different" they're probably going through something in their life that makes them feel they need to rebel. an example could be a teenager going through problems at home such as abusive parents (alcoholism, drugs) it could even be problems with a sibling causing this effect, or even parents going through a divorce.
personally, i've had first hand experience with the example i stated. of course, there are going to be the people that just like the look, and whether or not they admit it, they're just following a trend, and there's really nothing wrong with that in my opinion. whatever floats your boat! |
Everyone does things that could be considered non-conformist. The tattoos and piercings thing is still non-conformist. By far, most people DO NOT get pierced and tattooed. The reason you see the trend is because its relativley popular. You won't make any mention of the conformists, because you see them all the time, and the way they dress is probaly the same way you dress. So in your mind, the conformists arent something you even recoginize. You see what isnt you and label it such.
Such non-conformists, of course, tend to hang out with other non-conformists, and they can relate to them. Its the same as conformists hanging out with other conformists. The jocks hang out with jocks, the geeks with geeks, the goths with goths, etc. That was a rambling post, but I think I got the msg across. |
the image of the non-conformist is constantly changing, because trends will always strive to mimic it, and the non-conformists are trying to avoid being trendy.
|
If you dress and act to please yourself, and no one else, you are by nature a nonconformist. By that measure, there are relatively few nonconformists under the age of 30. Alternative fashions are still fashions.

I was just in Wal Mart today and saw a shirt that looked int he punk style and wounderd to ymself what the next avenue of alternative, counterculture would be. There are punk, goth, and emo shops in the malls. So what's next? DIY? Indie? "Where do we go from here? Just about anywhere." - REFUSED As for myself, I want to make my own clothes. Wish me luck. |
The Media is the message
Counter culture has been celebrated by the media as the 'cutting edge of cool' for over 35 years in the US. The media outlets work in a viscious circle jerk with the entertainment and fashion industry. Together they all work to push whatever they'd like down into the minds of the impressionable. Since the corporate grunge movement, corporate counter culture is what the media has been pushing. To get a tatoo and wear a uniform of cheaply manufactured, mass produced non-conformist clothes does not make you a non-conformist. The first mark of the non-conformist is the mind. It's the rejection of well accepted social conventions or ideas based upon the inability of those traditions to satisfy specific political, social, environmental, economic, religious, sexual, racial, or gender concerns. |
I non-conform by not worrying about it.
The other night I went to Tower Records and bought: The Marriage of Figaro (Opera, CD set) "Rennaissance" (a magazine for Ren Fest fans) A "Sandman" graphic novel and Taboo (classic XXX porn DVD) and I really didn't care what the gal checking me out thought. |
I guess i was talking about the trendy non conformists and not the trend setters. You just see the same thing everywhere you go and a true individual is scorned-- until that style of dress or life becomes trendy. I am by no means shitting on the people who go thier own way but simply pointing a light at those who achieve social acceptance by diving into the pool with everyone else.

The goal of the "non-conformist" is not to be different everybody else. It is to signal one's discontent with the "mainstream" and ultimately to find solidarity in like-minded people. |
I blame it all on Tommy Hilfiger, The Gap, all of that kind of crap. I can't believe how many people wear something just because it has someone's name on it. *sigh*

No i've never been a follower so i don't get the trends much. When non-conformity becomes the mainstream is my issue:crazy: |
As King Missile said...
I want to be different, like everybody else I want to be like I want to be just like all the different people I have no further interest in being the same, because I have seen difference all around, and now I know that that's what I want I don't want to blend in and be indistinguishable, I want to be a part of the different crowd, and assert my individuality along with the others who are different like me I don't want to be identical to anyone or anything I don't even want to be identical to myself I want to look in the mirror and wonder, "who is that person? I've never seen that person before; I've never seen anyone like that before." I want to call into question thevery idea that identity can be attached I want a floating, shifting, ever changing persona: Invisibility and obscurity, detachment from the ego and all of it's pursuits. Unity is useless Comformity is competitive and divisive and leads only to stagnation and death. If what I'm saying doesn't make any sense, that's because sense can not be made It's something that must be sensed And I, for one, am incensed by all this complacency Why oppose war only when there's a war? Why defend the clinics only when they're attacked? Why are we always reactive? Let's activate something Let's fuck shit up Whatever happened to revolution for the hell of it? Whatever happened to protesting nothing in particular, just protesting cause it's Saturday and there's nothing else to do? |
True unconformity is achieved when you stop caring what other people think. Not when you stop appearing the same.
|
oberon has a good point there. Anyway the paradox is that non-conformity becomes mainstream as neddy65 pointed out. Maybe we should drop all labels and just do what we think and want for ourselves. Although that statement might be non-conformist so you never win....
As long as your doing something (be it dress, music, movies and so on) if your doing it for your own interest/beliefs and not any other agendas such as social status, acceptance, image/labels and so on then you're definatly getting out of the label of superficiality and frivilousness (sheep) which is a good thing. Thinking for yourself. Wether its unique or conformist or not, who gives a fuck. Get over yourself and you know where you are with so what does it matter for anything else.... |
