How fast can you run a mile?
While I haven't tried to run a fast mile since I was forced to in high school, I was just wondering how fast some of you are able to run the mile in.
I used to be overweight and out of shape back then and I remember my best time being like 9:23, but that was such a long time ago. When I am at the gym I either use a tredmill at various speeds & inclines or use an eliptical crosstrainer, so I really don't have a sense of what my current time is. I was at Wal Mart today and meant to get a cheap stop watch so I could head to the track in the morning and find out, but I forgot to. Maybe I'll do it Sunday... I'd try to see how fast I could do it on a tredmill, but I just don't feel comfortable trying to run too fast on those. |
My record is 6:45 but I doubt I could do this now.
I used to run a mile and a half in 7:20 when I was in the Army. Been out for 4 years.... but still fit. I reckon I can still do it in under 8 minutes.
we didn't hvae the mile in high school (australia), but we had 1500 metres (i beileve a mile is 1600). Anywho i got around 7:15 for that.
I am not too sure if i could do that anymore, cause i generally train for short burst of speed, power and strength, namely playing basketball The biggest problem with middle distances runs was pacing myself. I was either fucked half way through by going to aggressively or at the end had lots of fuel left in the tank which i should've used during the run.... |
wow. i was horrible in highschool. my best time was 10:36. heh. and i'm probably worse now!
ummm....between 6:30 and 7:00 mins. i weigh 185 lbs tho, so it's kinda hard for me.
Under 6 minutes. I think my best that I've timed was about 5:45 but I've probably done faster than that on untimed runs.
I don't know...I usually run about 2.1 pr 2.2 miles in 15 minutes at the gym
so that's probably like around 7 minutes per mile? |
My personal record is 5:10 but that was in high school when I was in the best shape of my life, I ran a mile the other day and it was just under 7 min.
My best time in the 1500m (like SleepyJack) is 3:59:58 for official timing. I have had a non-sanctioned time at 3:51:12 but while this seems fast too many, I am just about to blow a gasket at this pace and the world record is now in the sub 3:25:00. I dont believe I will ever shave a measley (NOT) ~30 seconds off my best time ..... world records are amazing .......
I can run a mile in just over 5 minutes. I ran the other day and i thik i strained a few muscles under my rib cage cause i decided to do a rigorous sprint towards the end of it.
Some of the tiems on this post are pretty good......nice to see that not all of us sit at our computers all day without any exercise. |
6:30 was my best
around 7-8 minutes...depending on how I'm feeling...
but that's at a steady pace for a long run. If I open myself up...then probably faster. but I only do a one-minute finishing sprint at the end...so that's difficult to tell. |
I'll be lucky to *walk* a mile, haha.
Tommorow I will run a mile on the treadmile at full speed to get a more accurate reading of my speed..
4:20, on purpose of course.
i could never break 6 minutes in high school. i had a lot of friends in track and i had one friend who could run a 4:15-4:25 mile. he challenged me to a race and gave me a full lap headstart.
i played basketball on the team and thought i was in good shape. he beat my ass in that race. he also ran a marathon with a great time without training for it or never having run that distance before. bastard. running was all a head game of body vs. mind with him. |
9:45 was my best in high school
My personal record is 6:15, about a year or two before high school. Worst was around 10 minutes recently, but I'm pushing it back down to 8. Damn computers hijacking my weight!
damn... I don't want to post my time.. its so damn slow... by let's just say that if averages 5 miles/hr on the trendmill
never ran in high school started about two years ago and got down to just over 8-minute miles [run 3- 5 miles] broke my ankle about a year ago and just started getting back into it a few months ago...I'm about 25 pounds heavier and a minute or two slower...for now!
i used to get around 8:30 for this in high school.
i reckon if you double that, thats what iŽd get right now. |
I run 3 miles in about 22 minutes at a time so that is about 7:20 a mile. I guess if I were to run a mile for pure speed it would be about 6:30-6:45.
under 6 minutes if it's just a mile, about 20 minutes for 3 miles, but that was when i was kinda in shape, heh..
Personally I think my best in highschool was like 9:30-10:00.
There was this kid on the track team that could run the half mile in aprox 1:47 I beleive.. But I never knew what his mile was.. I would assume it a bit more than double that, maybe around a 4:00. (Him and his brother both hold national records for various events.. its pretty impressive for highschool kids) Track was pretty much our best sport.. besides swimming(girls) |
The other day, for some nostalgic purposes, i ran around my old local high school oval, which is about 400m around i did 4 laps and got 6:23 which was very encouraging for myself (used ot get over 7 in high school), not being a very good middle distance runner, mainly sprints/power stuff.
Maybe i'll try to make a new record each week? |
I get around 6 min. I usually run 2 miles a day and get around 13 minutes on my tests (army)
7:15 is my best.
Around 5:30 I think... but I''m not really sure as I haven't run all that much recently. Oh well.
Jeez. I just started running 3 weeks ago (Haven't run since I played football in high school - I was a lineman. Speed in the mile wasn't much of an issue.). I think my first mile was 12 mins even. The next one I timed (early last week?) was at 10:36. I'm training to complete a 10-miler (next weekend! Oh crap!) and ran 5 miles straight (took me just shy of an hour) and 7.5 of 9 miles today (not bad given that 3.5 weeks ago, I couldn't run a mile non-stop.) I figure I'll be sub-10 on Tuesday (I think I'll take tomorrow off). Still niiiiice and slow :)
I used to run a mile every day on the tredmill on highschool (after taking my inhaler of course :)) and yeah i would run it with in incline. I got it down to under 5 minutes. I don't remember exactly what, but I think 4:45 would be a close guess. I know I'm terribly outta shape, and I need to start doing that again. Running that fast made me happy. With my athsma clearing up, I wonder if I could improve upon that.
4:45 is pretty fast, right? |
I do a mile in 7:30 minutes but this is a split time becouse I always run about three miles in a row.
I guess if I run a mile I could do it in about 5,5 or 6 minutes. |
I ran a 5:58 in high school, but now with age, alcohol and no exercise, probably a 10:00 minute +.
I'm not sure how fast I can run a mile, I usually run 3 miles at a time. Last summer I ran a 5k race (just over 3 miles) and at the first mile marker I was at 6:30, I could probably get faster then that if I were to only run 1 mile.
In HS I could run a mile in about 6:15. Now, I'd be lucky to do it in 8, I'm not that out of shape, but I'm pretty sure that I'd be dead after running a mile.
I ran a 5:38 in high school, but I was only fourteen and weighed 165. Now I weigh 250, and am probably looking at a 9 to 10 minute mile right now.
depends who is chasing me... I usually run faster when I'm racing (triatholons) and one of my workout guys is behind me.
But for a short one mile, I can do 6:15 on a good day, plus or minus depending on altitude, because in Colorado, I couldnt beat 7:00 because of the air. btw, treadmills are not really accurate measures... I have had one tell me I could go no faster than a 10 minute mile, and another say I did it in 4 minutes. Go do it outside, and get a watch and a track. |
when i did track i got my personal best of 5:20.8 then last week i did a 6:19 in my jogging class (yah yah... i know a jogging class??) i feel pretty good about that... i havnt been goin that hard... but i can still do it in under 7... my next goal is under 6...
Probably around 10 min. I have midget legs and weigh 200lbs, so weights are more my thing.
i did it in 10 minutes in high school, i could probably do it in under 8 if i had to
4:59 when i was 15 and on the high school track team. i was also on cross-country and was able to run the three mile in 18 minutes. not the greatest, but what the hell.
i'm 27 now, have smoked for many years, and am highly out of shape after having had a desk job for a long time. |
My best was 6.52, but my average is somewhere around 7-7.30.
sure it was a treadmill. but I did it frequently enough that it was actually quite accurate. Also I should note out that the weightroom at my highschool was top notch. Those Treadmills were in great shape.
I hit about 5:50 ish for a mile, but that hurts. I'm a little out of shape at the moment and if I go for it I can do it in about 6:10. Never timed it on an outdoor run, but I would imagine that would be quicker as I don't have to wait for the treadmil to get up to the correct speed.
I'm about to start training for a triathalon next year, would have done it this year but I tore my ankle ligaments so I'm hoping to knock my fastest time down to the mid 5 minutes if not faster. |
That depends on what is chasing me

4:05 is my best if I recall correctly. 10K mile pace in peak shape was 5:05 per. These days my pace is much slower as my run is usually preceded by a swim and a bicycle ride. :p
at present prolly like 7 mins....that might be a lil on the generous side...i havent ran in prolly a year or two

yeah baby and yes there is a 1 infront of the 4 i prefer to take my time and enjoy the view. (and i have 2 bad knees, they squeek like rusty doors) |
lol dilbert
Back in my prime... about ..... 13 mins.. :) I was never really fast...
Nowadays.... uh.... I don't want to know.. |
I did a mile just under 6:00, maybe 5 and a quarter, and that was maybe 3rd or 4th best in the grade. I was in soccer then. You guys with sub 5:00s are freaky! =p
Only ever did one as fast as possible (at the gym). I weighed a bit (200+ lb), managed the 1500 in about 6 minutes - it was on a treadmill, and it wouldn't go any faster. Managed to keep up a conversation all the way through as well.
Never tried since. Should get back into it. |
As for my workout. I do 2 miles in 28 minutes 30 seconds. I am trying to beat my time everytime i run. This is very good for me so far. Setting goals to go farther faster is a good thing :>
ahh the mile brings back memories...
good times, good times... I remember back in my football years, I'd run a mile just under 12 minutes, I think, lol, if not for sure under 20 minutes...anywho yeah, I played nose back then :D good times indeed. |
I used to run it in about 7:30, but I havent tried since my Sophomore year of high school.
11 was my best, but that is out of shape and with a really bad knee (still is, but I am in better shape)
I know I can do a mile in under 5 min, but i dont know by how much, I've been busey wit weights and shit so i'll find out soon :D
I run cross country and winter track :D But im a sprinter, sooo, i run on a 400m track, first 3 laps i do in 1:45 last i sprint in 1 min... so im commin in at 5:30
Ummm...5:43 was my best in High School.
Running is gay. |

I haven't time myself running a mile since about 6th grade or so... That was 7 years ago. If I remember correctly my time was a little below 8 minutes. I wonder how fast I could run one now... Hmm.
5:30 in high school, i can probably do within 1:30 of that time now that i don't run regularly
Probably around 12 min. What can I say, I'm 200lbs and have midget legs :-D
i think my best time was probably around 6mn, but that was last year when i ran like two miles a night in under twelve minutes....weird. now, my best time is probably around 8mn-10mn.
I'm running 8:30 miles or so right now. I'm training for the Army, so I'm trying to get my miles down to about 6 or so. Shouldn't be too hard....
i do a lap around regent park in 20:58, 2.7 miles...
i think its an awesome time considering 2 months ago it took me 28 mins.... |
Well, used to be a nationally ranked track and cross country runner. In 7th grade I ran a 4:54 mile, high school I got it down to a 4:16, by the end of college I ran a 3:52 1500 and a 4:09 miler, but steeplechase is where it was at!!!

...for the philosophy forum. For me, my record is 5:30. I'm probably around 6:30 right now, but I'm training hard currently (just joined the Army ROTC so have to get in shape. I'm not in bad shape, but not nearly where I want to be). |
I think it was a 11-12 minute mile in high school.
I'm doing 1.5mi in 11min right now. Definitely want to improve on that. |
