wrong to use handicapped stall?
The bathroom in our office building has 3 small stalls and 1 large handicapped stall. I usually use the large stall because, it's roomy, well-lit, and the first one you come to. Plus the other ones all have doors that don't close quite right, so every once in a while if you forget to close it just right they swing open while you're sitting there. Very inconvenient.
Is it wrong to use the handicapped stall? Equivalent to parking in a handicapped parking place?

I use the handicapped stall too. I feel a bit funny about it, but I've never seen a sign that prohibits it, like a parking spot.
More importantly, I've never seen a person that needs to use the stall waiting when I got out. I have been in a rest room where a person with a disability came in and there was a line and the people in line gave her the first spot, so she quickly had access to the handicapped stall. I'd say it's perfectly fine as long as you don't hog it. Some people sit in there for (what seems like) hours at a time. If you are quick with your business and don't tie it up for some handicapped person who comes in I say go for it.
Personally I don't like to use it. It's just so big, to me it's like using a toilet in the middle of a warehouse. For some reason I like to be a little bit claustrophobic when I do my dudy, I don't know why. Not airliner size, that's way way too small for me!

Nothing wrong with it; of course, if somebody in a wheelchair bangs on the door, it behooves you to hurry up. Also, as somebody said, if there's a line for the toilets and one of them is specially for the handicapped, it's only fair to jump anybody in a wheelchair with other mobility problems to the front for the handicapped stall.
Now parking in a handicapped zone, that's bad news. Because the interloper is likely to hog the space for hours, like any parking place, and because handicapped spaces are usually the only ones wide enough to let wheelchair lifts, etc., operate. |

Use it as long as nobody else needs it. Kinda like public transit. Let the old people sit if they come on and don't have a seat, but you can still sit if nobody else is sitting there. I mean the seats on our local buses designated for the elderly or handicapped.

I always check the first stall, it's usually the cleanest, because people skip it. If it's the handicapped one then I'm going for it, whatever is the cleanest.

I have seen very few handicapped people actually in public restrooms - but I have seen queues for ladies toilets out the door (what is it with never having enough stalls and also with women taking forrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrever to do a wee!). In those instances the handicapped stalls are used as well and I have no qualms if it comes to my turn and I have to use it.
Wqhen you gotta go, you gotta go and there's no point in leaving it standing their empty. Generally I tend to use the 'regular' stalls though, don't know why, never really thought about it before. ![]() |

fuck 'em. they can wait a couple minutes. I park in the designated spaces too when I think I can get away with it. At the grocery store there are 7 or 8 handicapped spaces. The chances of 7 or 8 handicapped people buying groceries in my small town simultaneously are ludicrous. It used to really piss me off when my girlfriend was bursting pregnant and we had to walk past three rows of empty handicapped spaces.
some places here they have unisex bathrooms for transexuals or people who are "embarassed." I use those when I can because they're always empty and I like the looks I get when I come out of 'em. Hell, for that matter I exclusively use the women's room at work because it's cleaner. |

No problem with using it. 9 times out of 10, I've never seen someone handicapped in that stall. I use it if the need arises (all others taken, I want privacy at the end of the row, etc.)

Cliv, that's how I see it too.
laxative, I have several friends who are handicapped. There are a lot of people who think as you do in regards to handicapped parking spaces. Unfortunately, it's such a widespread thinking pattern that a lot of the time there's no place to park to use the lift in a van. Definitely the suck and upsetting for the person in the wheelchair.

I think it's different between toilets and parking spaces. The parking spaces are closer to the building etc so that handicapped people don't have to travel as far. The toilets are designed so you can physically fit in a wheelchair/transfer to the toilet/alarm cord in case of problems.
If you use a handicapped parking space, you're preventing a handicapped person from using that space - hence causing trouble. If you use the handicapped toilet, the worst is that they have to wait a bit while you're in there (so keep it short and sweet!) as cliv says, it's handicapped accessible, not handicapped only!

We have 2 stalls at work, and I have always used the handicap stall. I have never encountered the situation were someone in a wheelchair or otherwise needed to use the facilities before me. But if that ever did happen I would be sure to accomodate them first.
I think its all about a certain amount of courtesy and respect. |

I tend to use it, because my shoulder are wide
otherwise I'm in a cramped, uncomfortable stall. I don't believe they get used as often or as long as spaces. Spaces are for those who have a hard time walking, stalls are made for wheelchair users. The former is a much larger group. I'd be embarrassed if I find out I'm wrong. |

"So I get done taking a crap in a handicapped stall. I get out and there's a pissed-off guy in a wheelchair. He looks at me and says, "Hey, are you handicapped?" I said, "Not now, but I was when I went in there."
In many places, my size (stature, not weight) prevents me from operating the doors on the regular stalls without standing on the toilet. I should be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act ![]() |

Did anyone ever see that old show that Jim Carrey was on with the Wayans brothers (I can't remember the name)? They used to have a superhero character named Handi-Man who was a handicapped superhero. The first time I saw him, he found a non-handicapped person using a handicapped stall and pulled him out of it (I think he threw him out the window). I was laughing so hard, because I use the handicap stall on our floor. There are only two stalls and noone on our floor has a disability that would require them to use it.

In general I don't think it's appropriate to use a handicapped stall. They are there for handicapped users only. The only time I allow myself to use one is if it's the only one available to use and all the other stalls are filled up. |

i dont think its wrong. i have never encountered a handicapped person while using these stalls. usually i'm the only person in the bathroom or whatever.
hmm... and if you can get a driving 'disability' for being under 5foot.. i think being 6'9 should be no different ;P
