Men and grey hair...
 

Ok folks at my age the salt and pepper is evident...and in some places the salt is winning. I am speaking of the facial hair and temple area. I have a goatee that is grey at the chin and my sideburns are grey also. Some say color it...others say it is attractive as is. Can we get some opinions from everyone? Thanks

Eh, I think the hair accents the rest. If you're a badass, it makes you look more badass. If you're a saggy gut weakling, it makes you look more pathetic.

I'm kinda looking forward to getting old. I'm going to be a scrawny guy with veiny temples, a stern and masterful gaze and awesome gray hair.

My beard has a lot of grey in it. It started coming in about 16 years ago. Increasingly, I have grey peppering the hair on my head.

I wouldn't dream of colouring it.

My husband is starting to go grey. While I love to tease him about it (I'm about 1/4 grey @ 33, he's finally "catching up"), I've been vocal about my opinion that he not dye it as it becomes more noticable. I tend to think grey looks attractive on men.

I'm happy when mine stays around long enough to turn grey.

I couldn't be bothered to do anything about it.

I've got a few greys in my chin hair and several at the base of my hairline next to each ear. I'm sure more will come in. My dad had a gradual progression that happened over decades; mine started a few years ago.

I also always had a high and thin hairline and now an unfortunately placed thin patch just behind my hairline, so now I just keep it buzzed. I'm not sure if I'll ever be as bald as my dad, who has as much hair as Patrick Stewart. It's not looking that way.

The grey hairs are noticeable only if you look up close. Either way, I'm not concerned. I like the buzzed look on me, and any grey, silver, or while will just give me some brilliant highlights.

Oh, and it doesn't seem to bother or disadvantage people like George Clooney and Brad Pitt much.

Grey hairs are just part of the aging process, so I accept it. I've a sprinkle of grey, but for the most part it hasn't fully kicked in yet.

I have a colleague whose only grey hairs run in two stripes on either side of his head. Looks pretty cool, actually.

Just checked...bit more grey than the last time. Going the salt/pepper route.
Doesn't bother me in the least so dyes are not in my future.

Hair dye? How vain do you have to be to want to use this stuff? I have some grey and I don't care.

No plans on touching any kind of dye here, and the grey hair is already losing to the white in several spots. But I fully expected that as it is seems to run in the family at an relatively early age.
edit: I sure could do without the 60+ year old walk though whenever the weather shifts or my joints feel like complaining just 'cause.

Heh. Gray hair is the last thing this man has to worry about. My wonderment at the OP question tops it by long shot. Did you earn your gray hairs, or are you railing against genes? If the latter, good luck. If the former, take joy.

Each thread of silver speaks of an experience - remember when my father went through a similar dilema and he used dye for a while. Dont dye it - if you start, when would you stop? Or would you be one of those obvious elderly men with the obvious dye job standing next to the obvious sweep over - never ever go for the sweep over - it can end in spiraly ridicule - sure you have seen them.

I've got a bit in my beard and a few on my head. Now that I'm 45, I'm expecting a lot more to start happening. I've been looking forward to going grey for 20 years, so it's all good. In fact, i just started to grow my hair long again cause I want to see what the grey will look like with the long hair.

I've got some here and there. They seem to be slowly recruiting other hairs. I blame children and grad school. I'm looking forward to being gray, since it means that I'll probably be able to sneak my way into an undeserved senior discount at Denny's.

I have grey at the temples for the past 4-5 years, since my mid-thirties. I've not been bothered by it, to be honest.

I am 33 and dont have any grey hair so far. I wouldnt mind it though.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. At 50 I feel I have earned my salt n pepper and I wear it proudly. Just hear a lot of different opinions from my friends but most of the ladies say they like the mix.

When it comes down to it, that's the most important part of it! :suave:

I've got a few gray hairs but I've had a few since I was a young teen. If I had more I don't think I'd dye it. I think the important thing to remember is that if you do dye it don't go too dark! Chances are when a man is at the age that he has a ton of salt then no one is going to believe he has jet black hair.

Wouldn't dye my hair at any age.

The thing with gray hair...you have to groom it.

You look all ate up if you're a fat slob with gray hair sticking out at odd angles.

Just my 2 cents. This is coming from a guy who cuts his hair short and almost never uses hair gel.

Ahem. So, yes, grey hair is NOT a bad thing. You know that commercial where the lady knocks on the guy's door to borrow...I don't remember, milk or something. And he jumps out the window to buy dye for his beard as well as milk. I always yell that he looked better before coloring everything (and also, who would wait for milk that long? Seriously.)

I've had grey hair since I was thirteen. I started coloring when I was sixteen, but that had more to do with wanting to play around with color than with hiding the grey (I WILL have pink hair one day, damn it. I don't care if I'm "too old.") I haven't colored since early November, and I have a streak of grey at my left temple that I think looks pretty cool. (then again, people tend to look at men with grey hair differently than women with grey hair. Moral of the story is don't color it, you probably look more distinguished. And sexy.)

i find both of these types of people to stick out of crowds like sore thumbs. dye goes along with the second thing.

plus i don't want to put any chemicals in my hair that might or might not make me lose any more than i have already.

This is a great discussion thanks to everyone for joining in. I made it a point to ask many women this week of all ages and all said the grey was sexier, more distinquished (MSP!) and since I do groom and trim they liked it better than if I colored it. So...one good thing about a little age!

Grey hair -

An attribute on a man.

A detriment to a woman.

I prefer men who shave their heads, but that's a whole other thread.

Gray hair is good, as long as it's groomed well, as with any color of hair.

Hm. I don't agree. I'm an ash-blonde naturally, but I dye my hair a dark chocolate brown with red tips... but, at 27, I'm starting to get sleek silver strands. My currently plan is to keep it chocolate until the majority of my hair is silver, dye it all to match, then maybe tip it a jagged black. I think it'll be good.

Definitely not a universal truth.
