as for me,i collect:

ceiling fans
christmas decorations
clocks
radios

I collect semi-smooth to smooth rocks. Odd-shaped bottles.
Plastic jugs of old vegetable oil. (too lazy to throw out)
Paperback books. Aluminum cans. A few started-but-never-finished art projects.
Boxes. Dead fans and tv's.

Nothing really worth anything. ('cept the cans)

Books.

I usually pick them up at used bookstores, where they're often half or a third of the cover price (or better). For example, just recently I picked up Frazer's abridged edition of The Golden Bough for just $10 instead of the $19.95 listed on the cover. It's not the best deal I've found, but considering what's between the covers, I consider it a win.

However, I often use the library to fit my book-nerd needs into my budget.

Just kidding. I've never been the collector type. I don't really collect anything. i guess books would be closest but lately Ive been going to the library more so that doesnt really count.

I used to collect many things, but I've pretty much given up on collecting except for refrigerator magnets and hotel pens. I have lots of books, but I don't view them as a collection per se...I just can't get rid of them. What if I want to read them again?

I collect exotic plants and gargoyle statues.

I used to collect movie ticket stubs in a folder, but the quality of the tickets have declined from being thick/cardboardish to thin paper where the ink can easily be removed. I started in 1995 with Children of the Damned and stopped around 2005/2006.

I collect rocks from all over the world. I'd say half are from my travels, but I ask my friends who are travelling to bring me back a rock. The only burden is remembering. I think one of my favorite is a vial of sand from Egypt. Another is a stone from the banks of Loch Lomond. I also have a small piece of stone from the U.S. Capital Building. It had been damaged somehow and there was a fragment on the ground so I picked it up. I have a bunch from places in the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Places which were important to me. I've purchased an old newspaper "letter type" drawer with all the little wooden dividers. It's my intention to restore it into a glass topped side table and then place the rocks in there, labeled from their location.

Hands down, it's the cheapest collection one could ever hope to own.

Cimarron, my grandma has a glass-topped coffee table with rocks she's collected from rockhounding inside of it. It's truly beautiful, and a unique way to display some of her collection. She is a serious rockhound, and she and Grandpa take trips all around the West to collect rocks. She makes some beautiful jewelry out of the rocks she collects, though she does purchase some rocks specifically for making jewelry (you could say one of my collections is Grandma's jewelry).

I also collect rocks. I started with a box set called Rocks and Minerals when I was six, and I've been collecting rocks since then. As I was typing this reply, my husband handed me a surprise present: an agate he found this morning. When we go to the beach, I spend considerable time hunting for what I call "treasures": unique rocks, agates, and seashells. My seashell collection started with my dad's seashell collection, which contains many shells from Florida, and includes a seahorse.

I collect beer t-shirts. I have about ten beer t-shirts from different breweries. I have a way of talking people into giving me beer t-shirts. Out of all the t-shirts I have, I only bought one, a Deschutes Black Butte Porter t-shirt.

There are more collections, but many of them are tucked into boxes, like my piggy bank collection. Only two of my piggy banks are currently on display in my house.

Collecting...I used to collect pigs, small metal cars, old cameras..all kinds of stuff
However I now realise that you don't own that "stuff" IT OWNS YOU..
I've started to get rid of a lot of it.....

Hmm I feel like I need a collection hobby now that doesn't involve slicing off ears. What else is there?

I've recently come to the realization that I've amassed a pretty sizable collection of t-shirts from concerts I've been attending since the age of 16. Just a few days ago I scaled down well over a hundred shirts to about 70. I wouldn't consider these collectibles as I doubt they'll ever be worth anything but maybe whenever I have some kids they'll want them.

Bands include: Cephalic Carnage, Pig Destroyer, Cattle Decapitation, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Daughters, Crowpath, Zs, Aesop Rock, Cage, The Locust, Ulver, Weekend Nachos, Coalesce...

Rocks, seashells and arrowheads. They don't have to be remarkable. If it pleases me at that moment, I pick it up. When I'm at the beach I carry a plastic grocery bag just for that reason. And yes, I have bags of shells tucked away here and there. Does that make me a hoarder of shells? I also picked up an antler last summer. I still have it, so I guess that makes it a collectible? The bucks will be losing their antlers soon, so I've got to be on the look out. I saw a 10 point last week which would be awesome.

I guess I collect frog figurines and frog related things. None of these items have I purchased myself. When I was in Jr High, I mentioned that I liked frogs, my family went crazy. I still adore them and I have a good size curio cabinet filled with all the ones I have received over the years.

I also like to collect random things, and I truly mean random. I had at one point a chunk of the cement stairs leading to my ceramics class in high school, along with a baseball I found during PE. I have a model brain in a plexi glass head, I have one set of my bicuspids I convinced the nurse to smuggle into my purse. If it is strange, I like it. :D

How does one define a collection?

Stuff I have a lot of...

Books.

I unintentionally amassed a library of plant books: anatomy, physiology, morphology, development, floras, botanical teaching books, botanical illustrations, other plant picture books, and gardening references.
I also have a large collection of Star Wars novels.

Coins

I pick up any coin that I see, which has brought me some handy funds as well as a wooden jar filled with neat-looking coins from all over the world. I doubt that any of them are particularly valuable, and I wouldn't ever group myself among serious coin collectors, but I do love coins.

Journals

I've been writing in journals since second grade. Writing a little something nearly every day has left me with a chest filled with journals of varying sizes, colors, and shapes. Whenever I see an inexpensive journal it's difficult to resist purchasing, simply because I know I will use it. I've tried giving friends journals as gifts, but I guess it's not a particularly popular habit.

Pens
I suppose this goes along with my journals. I always like to have an over-abundance of pens. There's nothing worse than being without a pen. People have given me pens as gifts, some of which are quite beautiful. I love heavy metal pens and cheap dollar-for-20 pens - just any pen makes me happy. I especially enjoy cheap run-of-the-mill pens from different countries. Like paper clips, they are just a bit different with a unique character and ink tone.
