Way back when...
Post something from way back when...something was cool in your day.
reebok pumps were the in thing when i was a kid. all my favourite players wore them and i envied their skills because of course reebok pumps made them do what they do. http://hypebeast.com/image/2008/02/r...ni-light-1.jpg |
...I thought the age difference between us was greater than it apparently is.
I never got into them, but POGs were pretty popular when I was in junior high. http://www.unnatural20.com/storage/Gold_Coin_POG.jpg Some of my friends and I would casually play Magic: The Gathering as well. http://depblog.weblogs.us/wp-content...ire-hounds.JPG |
I'm pretty sure these were issued to kids when I was growing up.

Who could forget these lovely things?
http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/att...7&d=1243041231 and clackers were cool. Or they were, until safety advocates starting popping up. http://www.vintageclackersandpopperk...ackersTEAL.jpg |

I found a clip of them in use: |
and I can't find a picture of these flip-flops on the internet...we called them deckies, I think. but everyone wore these in New Smyrna.
I was also particularly enamored of this type of sundress at the time. this is me circa 1977 or so. :) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5169/...0d6d325937.jpg |
- very cute MM!
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Okay, here's something that was all the gear when I was in high school: everybody had an Adidas sport bag. Carried everything from your lunch & books to your running shoes or bathing suit. http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/u...das70s_2_1.jpg Nobody had backpacks. if you didn't have an Adidas bag, you pretty well carried your stuff loose. |
these folk became cool once i figured out the whole irony thing.
plus they're great. this helped my high school brain and this helped the lower regions |
When I got over these....
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...Dinside_0a.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...t_Krondor6.jpg I got into these.... http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...fp/nirvana.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...ana_lyrics.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...pumpkins_2.png http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...pkins-gish.jpg |
Fond memories of the hot plastic smell.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h...ont-of-box.jpg My microscope was the coolest thing. My 9 year old self danced with joy when I opened that gift. I loved my Earth-shoes. They were dark brown & reminded me of polished buckeyes. I spent a lot of time gazing down at them during math class. |
I wanted them all, but we couldn't afford them all. Which is to say, I had chewy, my brother had Han. I had Vader, my brother had Luke, etc. I remember thinking that only rich people could afford a Millenium Falcon:
http://i560.photobucket.com/albums/s...tal-a-moon.jpg Some of the coolest things to have were Ninja Throwing Stars in the early 1980's. I was able to buy them via mail order from the back of martial arts magazines when I was in the 6th grade. |
Woah! Everybody had one of these in grade 8 and you'd use them until the handles wore out.
I loved this thing. http://www.toysyouhad.com/apestreehouse.jpg And of course... Star Trek (I didn't own this but my best friend did). The teleporter was the coolest. http://www.virginmedia.com/images/st...set-431x30.jpg |
A must have...
http://www.thecaptainsmemos.com/wp-c...epper-car1.jpg You also had to have an album to put these in... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NjD8n7XWOi.../s400/puff.jpg She was about the coolest thing ever, and the ONLY reason I've ever eaten a Wheatie http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9Jm_IAT3Ge...ox-246x345.jpg And all the cool kids "smoked" these... http://www.megalink.net/~dale/candycig1.jpg |
When I was in high school all the cool kids were rocking these...
Oh, Trapper Keepers. I remember mine, it was purple with bright pink neon-tubing hearts all over it.
I also remember jelly bracelets, jelly shoes, and garbage pail kids. |
I still remember that the school supply lists we had expressly said "NO TRAPPER KEEPERS". I had one anyway, for keeping my stuff at home together.
I loved (and still do love) anything with Hello Kitty on it. I had pencils, pencil case, stickers, erasers, and now I have pencils, and a SIGG water bottle with her on it: http://www.one-stop-party.co.uk/imag...itty-color.gif |
Atari 7800 is where it's at, and it's backwards compatible!
I remember Trapper Keepers, but I never had one and can't for the life of me figure out why they wouldn't be allowed. |
Well, in the early years of elementary school, a Peechee sufficed for carrying school work to and from school.
http://www.creativepro.com/files/sto...090904_fg4.jpg A Trapper Keeper took up too much room in the primary school desk, made noise when it was opened, and in later elementary school, proved to be too small for the amount of loose-leaf notebook paper teachers wanted us to have on hand. |
that looks pretty retro Snowy, I doubt that you're that old!
|
HA! I love this thread.
I wore these in the early 80's and then again in the late 90's, They came back. http://tallshortgirl.files.wordpress...04/jellies.jpg I believe Jr High was when it was cool to tight roll your jeans http://images.quickblogcast.com/5/8/...n0005.jpg?a=48 It was cool to wear your Eastland shoes with your tight rolled jeans. http://di1.shopping.com/images1/pi/d...almouth+in.jpg I also had a period where I got a "Rachel" Hair Cut, but never styled it right: http://lh5.ggpht.com/darraghdoyle/SH...ae35a1bcbf.jpg I was totally Angela from My So Called Life, She (and I) dressed like this at first: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-X6tmUTc-u...0s+fashion.jpg Then started dressing like this: http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/i...led-Life_l.jpg I even had that exact same plaid, flannel dress. I wanted to dye my hair the same color, but my mom wouldn't let me. |
How about these..... http://www.stuckinthe70s.com/images/petrock.jpg |
And I wasn't allowed to wear jelly shoes after I tripped and fell one too many times. Mom got tired of bandaging me up, so the jelly shoes went into the garbage. :( |
Balloon in a tube. Apparently you can still buy these online.
Tempest was the ONLY game I played at arcades. Many many quarters were lost to that particular addiction. I would skip lectures to head downtown to the "The Wizard" arcade hoping that there was nobody on the game. Most likely there wasn't because it was just too frustrating for most people.
I've tried to play emulated versions on the PC, but it isn't the same as having the upright unit that you can stand i front and spin the big metal knob, and slam the red button. |
How about feather roach clips?
We used to win these at the county fair. I had a pink one attached to my rearview mirror for a couple of years in the early '80s. |
Re: mixedmedia's spirograph:
I wanted to get my son a spirograph for Christmas, I loved mine when I was a kid. It was so cheaply made, I passed. I was disappointed :grumpy: I almost forgot the most important weapon in any 80's girl's arsenal: |
i wanted this car when i was a kid..i also wanted to be david hassellhoff
I tried to imitate Kim Wilde in her hair style.
My two brothers and I would play the Amiga500 for hours and hours. Our favourite was Earl Weaver Baseball. It drove us nuts because anytime we played the all-star level Earl would always have a rally in the ninth to beat any of us. Drove us crazy. |
At school, just as we entered the 6th form, the rules changed, to let 6th formers choose their clothes. Afgan coats were forbidden, but those ADIDAS Sports bags usually had one in them, waiting until the school day finished and we'd go to the forbidden coffe bars.
http://ventnorblog.com/copy_images/afghan-coat.jpg These were allowed http://www.prezzybox.com/data/media/11065.jpg And my goodness, I can still remember the feeling of "Now we are in the space age!" :) |
As for the digital watch (something Douglas Adams was keenly fascinated with) your post reminded me of the one or two kids who managed to get a CALCULATOR digital watch: http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/u...ator_x2_ps.jpg and as for calculators, these came out in my grade 12 yr, and of course were banned from exams & tests. The Texas Instruments TI-59: http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/u...eto/ti59_1.jpg You could select a program card and slide it into the side for specific functions as well. |
Talk about early technology! I remember this ...
Trapper Keepers were banned at my school because the velcro noises were "distracting".
