Thinking of buying a watch
Hi,
I've been thinking of buying a watch, but I'm not sure if I should be spending this amount of money on what's really a vanity item. I've shopped around quite a bit, and I'm pretty much set on an Archimede Pilot H: ARCHIMEDE Pilot H I'm pretty sure I want the brown strap, titanium case, and standard crown...which works out to $600+. Ouch. I make pretty good money, and could probably afford it, but... Thoughts? |
I'm wearing what has come to be my favorite timepiece of all time: the Freestyle Navigator. It's no frills and all business, designed to be an inexpensive surfer / diver watch. Somehow the crystal is still flawless after numerous months of abuse. It has a just-right display size and an integral electronic compass (adjustable for declination) which has proved to be useful several times as a general direction-finding tool. The band is infinitely adjustable and very comfortable. Only costs ~$120. I purchased mine through Zappos. I'm actually so pleased with it that I'm thinking about purchasing another one to keep in reserve in case something ever happens to this one. I recommend the silver bezel's display over the black one; the black bezel's display is awful.

A watch is a timepiece AND personal adornment. If this one fulfils both functions, and if you have the money in your budget, go for it.
I have for daily wear a Fossil Arkitect self winding watch - it cost me £25 in an end of line sale, and i wear it on most occasions, but I also have a Raymond Wiell dress watch that cost hundreds of pounds 20 years ago. I'd be equally happy to wear either to work or to a dressy event. |

This is the last watch I received, not bad for $70 and when I'm very disciplined about winding it, it picks up about a second a week. Just about everyone who has seen it looks at me like I'm loony tunes, but I love it. Plain and simple, it is just about my favourite present ever. I plan on not having to buy another watch for a really long time, which is what it really comes down to. If you don't get this watch, are you going to be eyeing it for years regretting the watch you did get? If you can afford it and it's really what you want, go for it. |
The profile of that Pilot is really nice but the face is a huge turn-off for me. With those large, possibly glow-in-the-dark hands and the plain everything, it looks just like a Citizen and I guarantee no one will notice it costs 4x as much.

As a guy who just spent $600 on a cell phone:
Do what makes you happy. It sounds like you've been coveting this bad boy for a while. Sure, it's a luxury, but so what? What else were you going to spend that money on? So long as the answer to that question isn't 'food', 'rent', or 'retirement' I see no reason not to get the watch instead. |
Shit yes! Buy the watch that makes you happy.
You could easily spend $600 on an enjoyable weekend. In five years you won't remember it. Or you could spend $600 on a watch that you will use and enjoy for years to come. Maybe your whole life. |

Yes, you should get the watch you like best.
I had a nice watch in college and it became lost/stolen. It was really expensive to me at the time and I have not worn a watch since. |
Are you buying it for YOU, or are you buying it to impress someone else?
Stop and think about that. If no one every notices it, no one ever comments, no one ever realizes you own it, will you still think it was money well spent? If so, go for it. I own a couple of nice watches in that price range, and hope one day to have a couple that are far more costly than that. But I want them for ME, because I like having nice things that my hard work earned me. By my standards, if you are doing it for yourself, and you can do so while caring for all of your other responsibilities, more power to you. |
