How animated are you irl?

Facial expressions?
Hand gestures?
Eye contact?
Dull, monotonous tones?
Failed attempts at humor that no one 'gets?'

On my good days, I can sell you a bottle of dog urine as a detoxifying elixir. I interview very well and often get the job - np. I keep interest levels up, notoriously with my facial expressions. Hand gestures are kept at a minimum. I struggle with eye contact - more comfortably, I dodge around the facial features of the other, but I'm getting better with this.

You?

Willravel 11-24-2009 12:07 PM

How animated? I'm like Dr. Manhattan most of the time. Only clothed and not blue.

GreyWolf 11-24-2009 12:51 PM

Despite the amazing wit and insight of most of my posts here, irl I'm dull beyond belief. Hard to believe, right?

I could sell my personality as a sleep aid, I think.

I'm animated enough to nearly get fired last week for talking (cube farm, AKA nazi daycare with the VP running things), some of my coworkers fear my instigating skills, and I sometimes call people things just to see what they will say, supervisors included. For instance I called one sup "dookie" just to see how he would react .

A month ago I told one guy his face was stupid. He's heard it from someone every day since.
Sometimes I take an extra mouse and slip it over the cube wall, then slide it up and down like it's climbing the wall to freak the guy over there out. Reactions vary but laughing is always a part of it.
I've thrown water bottles over the cube walls when I'm being mildly harassed.
I've instigated plastic silverware fights by hitting one guy on the left shoulder, then saying the guy to his left just nailed him (that was a good one).
I almost got punched one time when I walked up to a guy and put my hand on his neck. I had been holding a massive freezing coke for 5 minutes.

That's just at work. I can do much better when I'm not limited, although I've been in some serious shit for my creativity when I lose touch with safety in favor of having a laugh. That was when I was younger though.

Hey, I'm the quintessential scorpio, with a massive range of emotions and thoughts. My laughter, at times, makes people turn around in fear :D

Aha! Scorpio!

It all makes sense now lol.

LoganSnake 11-24-2009 01:35 PM

If you've witnessed me in chat, you get the idea.

What you can't see in chat is that I use my hands to communicate as much as my mouth and facial expressions. Thanks, dad.

If astrology means anything to you, I'm an Aquarius.

I usually think of myself as a Performer, in every sense of the word. My humour can be a bit off, and is sometimes a bit dry, but overall I tend to be rather outgoing.

I excel in sales because of my personality. I've been putting on shows since a young age, so it's all old hat to me.

Plan9 11-24-2009 02:37 PM

I'm a cartoon.

I am working on the "loud and obnoxious" elements of my personality, with varying degrees of success.

Shauk 11-24-2009 04:03 PM

I'm batman.

Jove 11-24-2009 06:00 PM

It all depends on the subject. If I have no idea what you are talking about, I am usually quiet asking questions, nodding my head and making small comments. If it is a subject I enjoy or interested in, I am really energetic and talking as fast as possible and maybe mumbling my words, using my hands and smiling a lot.

CinnamonGirl 11-24-2009 06:33 PM

Apparently, I have this thing with facial expressions...? :D

I'm pretty reserved, to be honest... until I feel comfortable. Some old co-workers joked that I didn't say a word for two months, and after that, I wouldn't shut up.

I use my hands a lot when I talk, and when I'm excited, there's emphatic gesturing. I laugh often, and smile more, and can usually make other people laugh, too (even though sometimes my jokes are a little too geeky...)

In all honesty? I don't make eye contact for very long, and I'm not very animated in body language or facial expressions, though I do enjoy making people laugh with my often crass, sarcastic (though often ironic), and/or "punny" humour. The puns work more often than they should. I thank sitcoms for that.

little_tippler 11-26-2009 02:11 PM

I have no trouble with eye contact but smiling at strangers is harder unless they make me feel at ease straight away. I don't make lots of hand gestures I don't think. I'm pretty quiet, which makes it so that often I have to repeat myself because my speech volume can be low if I'm in an unknown situation. I think I'm pleasant company and I warm to people easily. Once I'm comfortable I can talk a lot and am also a good listener. I usually try to remember that other people are in the same situation as me and many times I end up being the one making others feel more comfortable, making silly wisecracks or complimenting people. I'm quiet but friendly.

im changing my name to dlish_guru. i'm pretty much the same way too. it all depends on the situation and the people i am around, but generally im reserved.

I'm a salesman. It's my job to be animated.

I speak with my eyebrows. I usually flail my hands about wildly. I laugh constantly.

I think my animated personality derives from my love of entertaining others.

Though, if I'm in an uncomfortable situation, such as one where I'm surrounded by people I don't know, I'm pretty quiet and reserved.
_________

I'm a Scorpio too...

MSD 11-29-2009 08:58 AM

I'm loud and opinionated, and if you can't take a joke, you probably shouldn't be around me. My lack of Halloween plans was resolved this year when I was invited to a party by a friend's coworker who had never met me, but had hear a lot of stories. I apparently have a reputation as the life of the party at an international bank.

I don't do many gestures, it's just not me. I make eye contact with everyone and am rarely the first to break it. I scale back the intimidation factor of this by smiling a lot. Monotone is situational, and usually reserved for when it would be funnier than the alternative. Facial expressions vary; I've got plenty, but I'm no Hugh Laurie.

noodle 11-29-2009 09:07 AM

I enjoy smiling at strangers. It usually makes them uncomfortable.
Or they smile back. I always tell people to have a nice or lovely day.
Usually to piss them off or to get back at someone who was rude.
I talk a lot with my hands... much of it comes from a background with ASL
I think. And with my face. Apparently I make funny faces.
I tend to get overly animated when I get worked up but when I'm in
observation mode, some people forget that I'm there or think I'm bored.
But really, I'm just plotting everyone's doom.

I've always been relatively unanimated while speaking, which is unusually contrasted by my propensity for both gestures and facial expressions while listening. Eyebrow lifting, mouth quirking, goatee stroking, nodding, chin holding, among others.

Eye contact is steadily maintained unless I sense that the other person is uncomfortable with it, in which case I will avert my eyes on occasion.

For the most part, speech is confined to a narrow tonal range, as I tend to subdue strong emotional reactions. Raising my voice feels unnatural. I've often been referred to as a Vulcan during conversations.

Humor is morbid, sarcastic, and thoroughly deadpan. I am incapable of telling a joke, but I am known for situational remarks characterized as astute. Those moments of humor depend on the situation, so if it's bland and uneventful, don't expect much from me. I can't cheer you up when you're down, but I can cause delightful schadenfreude before your better judgement realizes what is happening and silences it.
