Men Skin Care Routine ?

Hi, I`m a 21 year old guy. I want to know what is the basic skin care routine for men. Especially the face.

ratbastid 11-04-2009 05:14 AM

My routine: wash it, wipe it, good night.

Don't use a straight razor when you're drunk; avoid fists at all times; don't hunt with Dick Cheney; don't sleep with your head on your keyboard, a corduroy pillow, or a married woman other than your wife.

well the skin care will vary depending on what you need. Are you looking to get rid of acne? Smoother skin after shaving? Just better skin? What?

"After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion."

...

I use that ground peach pit goop with the salicylic acid to scrub my ugly mug. The gritty pain lets you know it's working. I then apply a squirt of cheap, tested-on-Sri-Lankan-children SPF-15 moisturizer so my face doesn't look like an old boot at 50. This routine works well to deter visage volcanos.

I don't shave every day. Hell, sometimes I shave twice a month. I don't like scraping the hair off my face despite how atrocious my Joe Dirt beard looks.

I am so glad I read that book.

My SO's routine: Whatever face wash I buy for him+sunscreen. Simple but effective.

as a manly man, my routine is sticking my face under the shower for 30 seconds each morning.

Willravel 11-04-2009 11:24 AM

Facial care? For men? Steel wool made from an old battleship, then mud from Gettysburg, then water made from snow off K2. Polish off with a liter of stout beer and a sporting event. Once a year.

But yeah, a basic scrub, medicated since you're still in late puberty, then maybe some sunscreen.

Plan9 11-04-2009 11:37 AM

Good show, Willravel.

...

Also: Where you live and what your goals are with your personal hygiene routine are important.

A certain degree of metrosexuality is required in the Washington D.C. Metro area in order to approach women and be successful in the workplace.

Things like washing your face with soap, brushing your teeth, and keeping your mullet trimmed are required.

These groups... they're not down with the Grizzly Adams Well-I-Drink-My-Own-Urine thing. Not so much.

Now you know why I live in southern Oregon!

just neutrogena facial soap, in bar or pump form for me in shower with a puff. Easy enough and not too much dry skin.

JStrider 11-04-2009 07:02 PM

i just use whatever bar soap I use on the rest of my body.. scrub it with the washcloth I use everywhere else also...

I also use that same bar soap as shampoo. Ha HA!

I didn`t expect so many replies. Thanks you guys, you`ve all been of great help.

Plan9 11-12-2009 09:09 AM

newone321 11-12-2009 09:21 AM

I was definitely surprised.

I suggest a moisturizer that has an SPF in it to prevent sun damage. They have oil free versions, if that is a concern.

Poppinjay 11-12-2009 01:44 PM

I'm lucky I got me a woman before I moved to DC. So I treat my face with bus exhaust and metro grime. It goes over well in Alabama and Detroit, where real men roam free and die of accidental gunshot instead of purposeful gunshot.

There is a total lack of metrosexuals where I work. They're all in to basketball and such.

Plan9 11-12-2009 02:34 PM

*heavy note that previous sarcasm fail'd*

Yes, being an unwashed heathen is manly.

Manic_Skafe 11-12-2009 03:18 PM

I wash twice daily with medicated Neutrogena face wash.
Exfoliate nightly with whatever I can find on sale.
Shave every 2-3 days with nothing but a sharp straight razor.
Moisturize after each wash with Neutrogena oil-free spf 15.
And I scrub nightly with a washcloth and hot water on nights where I haven't shaved.

I also avoid being too rough or touching my face without having firs washed my hands as either can lead to irritation.

I suppose I should read the book as well? (..oh wait was that sarcasm?) I recognize the quote from the movie, but was told by a friend the movie was soft in comparison. He cited the use of a toilet paper tube and a hamster.

Anyway, another way to look at it is in combination with your shave. I started learning the straight edge routine recently, and it's even improved the safety razor shave. I use whatever bar is in the shower, then a boar brush for soap, and after shave balm from Kiehl's. edit: Hot water until the final rinse using cold water to close up the pores before after shave application.

Random trivia: ingrown hairs from shaving are due to the razor heads that "pull" the whisker then cut it, but that doesn't occur with a straight edge because it cuts off a layer of dead skin along with the whiskers.

My husband uses witch hazel + tea tree oil nightly before he goes to bed. You don't need much tea tree oil - he adds a drop or two of tea tree oil to the entire bottle of witch hazel.

Procedure:
Obtain a clean paper towel.
Moisten with witch hazel mix.
Wipe on face, neck, shoulders, and occasionally back.
Throw away towel.
Sleep.

When he wakes up in the morning, he uses Irish Spring while he showers.

He doesn't moisturize his face, though, and I wish he would. He has incredibly dry skin.

LoganSnake 12-12-2009 08:48 AM

I just wash it with water every morning and a few times throughout the day.

And I use this on my face in the winter months because my skin flakes off in chunks in dry weather.

I wash with soap, and shave with lotion.

Like this.

With the flower as well? Classy!

I use Irish Spring bar soap in the shower on my face and body, outside the shower I do wash my face often daily because i have oily skin but usually just use water and wipe down my face no soap just warm water. 2-4 times a week I'll use a shower soap gel with a washcloth and go to town scrubbing....everywhere...

samcol 12-14-2009 11:41 AM

My rule of don't touch the face don't clean it seems to work pretty well, it stays clear of acne and is non greasy. It gets cleaned a little bit by my shampoo I supposed but that's it. Then I shave with organic shaving cream.

In the winder I usually alternate between regular shampoos/soaps and organic ones. It seems to keep my skin from drying out as much.

Also for weird skin problems like rashes, bug bites, mites, about anything I gave Neem oil lotion a try. It smells like shit but saved me more trips to the doctor for a bad cash of jock itch that seemed uncureable and only cost me $10. It also is said to help with herpes scabies and all kinds of other skin problems.
