clipping coupons
 

i was watching home movies and they had a thing about clipping coupons. Jason had a coupon box, and it reminded me of my dad, who used to clip coupons and have a coupon box. this got me thinking.....

in the past, many many many years ago, when i was young and poor and had a wife a kid, we clipped coupons and managed to save a significant amount of money. we eventually stopped as we got financially better off and didn't need the things they had coupons for.

so seeing the episode about coupons, i thought about clipping coupons, maybe even getting a pimped out coupon box to wow the people in the supermarket with. "look at that guy, he is serious! he must be a professional coupon clipper!"

so i went through the sunday newspaper looking at all the coupons they have. it turns out i don't use any of stuff they have coupons for. they don't have coupons for fresh fruit or vegetables. and now they have like $1 off on TWO boxes of this, $1 off on any THREE bags of that. i guess if i used the products it would be worth it, but i don't.

does anyone clip coupons? do you know how much you save when you shop?

Sure, I clip. I only clip coupons for what I normally buy, not what I think I might buy. I have a shopping card for discounts with one of my supermarkets, and they send me discount coupons and free coupons for items that I frequently purchase. That's nice. And there are a few websites that have coupons that you can print. I also clip the coupons from the boxes and labels of items I purchase. It's fun to me and almost a game. Red is quite amused at my coupon activity at times, but he always complements me when I manage to save $20 or so. Not long ago on one purchase with the coupons I saved about $60 from what would have been a $140 purchase. To truly save you should only use coupons for what you normally buy. Otherwise, you will end up with a lot of expired cheap crap in your pantry.

Coupons very rarely help me, as the store brand is still cheaper than the amount the name brand would be with the coupon...or the coupon wants me to buy more than I want in order to save.

I do not buy the local paper, and though the building I live in do get some flyers and there are some coupons, I think we are somehow missing a large amount of coupons that we can use. Since our daughter was born we have though used as many coupons as we can and have saved alot of money especially on diapers and formula.

squeeb, I have found the same issue with coupons. I am rarely able to use the coupons that come with the Sunday paper. I become frustrated going through them. I used to clip coupons for my father-in-law when my husband and I lived with his family. He always appreciated the fat stack of coupons sorted tidily on the kitchen table on Sunday afternoons. I always walked away from the experience rolling my eyes at the rediculous products that they are advertising.

Though occasionally a coupon comes around for dry rice or beans. Often I am able to find coupons for Marzetti salad dressings. Other than that, I haven't had much luck. My sister usually sends me coupons that I find of interest.

Yeah exactly, the coupons are always for the shitty items that I don't actually want or need, or an inordinate amount of something I do. Of course this is intentional psychology, as it causes you to buy stuff you don't want or need because it seems like a good deal. You may think you are saving, but you're actually spending more, otherwise they wouldn't even bother offering the coupons would they?

No, I don't use coupons. Seems they are usually for big brand names which are more costly than the scratch products, if not just useless junk. Also I try not to support those big distributers. Also, that food is all processed that is sold by coupons, very unhealthy.

I don't use in store coupons, it's too much of a hassle to me. HOWEVER, Every time I buy online, I'll do a quick search for discount codes and I can usually save a couple of bucks up to a few hundred. Recently I saved 65 bucks when I ordered my computer about 7 months ago.
