i cant drink beer, why?

ok, i can drink one beer no problem, but right at the end of my second i feel like throwing up. some beers are better than others, but even then im back to just 2 beers. the ONLY way i can drink, is if its a hard liquor (my usual drink is a jack/coke) then my tolerance is normal.
i'd just like to know why i can never just drink beer with my friends.

My question would be why is it so important to drink beer? My husband absolutely cant stand it (neither can I), when we get together with friends Im either drinking rum and pineapple juice or wine, hubby drinks crown and coke. Some people just cant handle beer, same as some cant handle wine (I cant handle red wine at all) or some cant handle liquor (I cant drink Vodka), big deal, I cant remember one single time not being able to drink those things has ruined a get together.

You'll grow in to it (or not). For me, I couldn't drink beer until I was 24. I was a jack-and-coke man for 4 years, then stopped drinking for six months while my wife was pregnant, and when I met some friends for dinner one time, had a nice strong beer on a whim and liked it!

My advice is don't force it, there are some delicious beers out there, once your ready for them, but if you don't enjoy drinking them, don't.

Oh, and you couldn't pay me to drink red wine. Ew.

It could be how you are drinking it. In college when I started drinking beer I was drinking it wrong you could say. I was swallowing to much air when I was drinking and it was causing me to get really sick to my stomach. Only happened with beer; wine, liquor, mixed drinks all went down fine. I changed the way I drank and I could drink it without getting sick. Also, stomach problems like acid-reflux and IBS will cause drinks like beer to be undrinkingable because of the carbonation.

I'll take liquor over beer any day. However, if beer is the only thing there I can drink it but I can't drink nearly as much beer as I can liquor. Your problem may be like me, and that the beer just makes me feel full. When I start to feel full I don't feel so great. Does this happen to you or do you just feel nauseous?

If you just feel nauseous then LordEden's post may be your key.

Acid reflux and IBS are not caused by carbonation, and when it comes to both GERD and IBS, everyone has different triggers. Carbonation may cause the sphincter at the top of the stomach to distend, allowing acid to pass back up in to the esophagus, but this is different in every person. Even when I was very sick with GERD and IBS, I could still enjoy a beer now and again, and now that I'm healed, I can enjoy more than one now and again. Hard liquor I can only drink if it's mixed, and I can't drink hard liquor in a cocktail where the primary ingredient is other liquors or liqueurs. Straight hard A rips my stomach up. The notable exception to this seems to be Scotch.

Some people just don't like beer. Personally, I live in a part of the country where drinking beer--good beer--is just part of the culture. I can't imagine not drinking beer. I was introduced to microbrews via a couple more mild beers, namely Pyramid's Apricot Ale (now Apricot Weizen) and Widmer's Blonde Betty (now defunct). Widmer's Hefeweizen is generally a good beginner's beer, as it's a mild wheat beer with no extremes. Blonde ales are also good beginner's choices.

And don't chug the damn thing. Good beers are meant to be enjoyed. If you chug it, of course you'll end up with a full stomach. It should take a while to enjoy a single beer. If it doesn't, you probably aren't drinking a very good beer.

I have the same problem . I feel very nauseous after dringking just one bottle.

One day at a party after drinking beer I happened to adjust my breath and stomach and then I belched a lot. After the belch I felt much better.

I guess beer can generate some gas in your stomach and that makes you sick. If you can adjust your breath and stomach and let the air out, perhaps you'll feel better and drink more.

I know my IBS isn't caused by that, but it does happen to be on my triggers. Carbonation just kills me, that's why I cut soft drinks out of my life. I'm the exact opposite of you, I can hand hard liquor straight WAY better than I can beer. Give me a shot of wiskey or rum straight up and I'm golden.

after belching i feel 100% better, too bad for me i cant belch when i want to, it tends to build up and then it just explodes, sounds horrible, like if you heard it you'd swear i was barfing, but i'd be like 'god that felt good'

I drink beer all the time. Well not ALL the time, but you get my meaning. Part of it depends on what you like and part of it depends on how well you handle carbonation etc.

I can drink heavy stouts like guinness, but only in moderation. Drinking guinness, to me, is like drinking an ever-expanding protein shake. I couldn't drink it all night, no way could I keep that down. That may be a factor for you, it could be the "liquid bread" factor - depending on brand, it can be heavy or very filling.

It may also be that the grains used in some beers are not compatible with you. Just as an example, fennel makes my dad very nauseous and it doesn't sit well with me either.

Belching is good when drinking beer. Keep it quiet if you like or belt it out, but carbonation is going to fizz out once it goes down and you're going to have to get rid of it. You might have things in your stomach that carbonic acid will react with, the lining of your stomach has lots of surface area that creates sites for reaction, and the sloshing and movement helps the CO2 gas out as well. It's almost like a vinegar and baking soda party in there. I can swallow air at will (and unfortunately it goes the other way, including acid reflux) so burping quietly has never been a problem. Not that it matters, we burp all night and no one gives a damn. If I was with company that gave a damn, I wouldn't be there to begin with

I used to chug liquor in middle school (yeah started early lol) and chase it with beer. I can't do that now, acid reflux makes my esophagus a little tender so if I do shots with friends, I only do a couple, and I chase it quickly. And wine? Ugh. My wife is italian and she LOVES wine. I can't touch it, it makes me ill. I can drink tequila all night, but wine will make my stomach catch fire and burn me down. I'd have to pop about 3 pepcid ACs after a glass of the stuff.

In Texas we chug like mofos. We chug in high school and we chug in college. We do beer bongs, keg stands, timed beer matches, at A&M we did ring dunking where you chug the pitcher...you name it we do it. Some of your intolerance may just be in your upbringing. I grew up drinking beer on party night like water, so of course I can drink a whole bottle in one continuous gulp, and then do a few more right after that. If you can't, maybe you need a little more practice

Find some rednecks, hit a pool hall, and drink like they do. Burp loud enough to make people turn heads. Let loose and crack up. You'll probably puke a few times, but you'll quickly catch on.

There are people who are allergic to hops as well. But I don't think this is the case here. I think the theory of how the OP is consuming the beer and handling the gas may be correct though.

If one is consuming something yellow and fizzy that is advertised a dozen time during an NFL football game straight from the bottle or can or from a red Solo cup at a frat party, belch away I'd think.

But a real beer should be enjoyed from a glass and not chugged as was mentioned earlier. this allows some of the carbonation to escape contributing to the beer's aroma which will contribute to the taste and reducing the gas in the digestive system plumbing.

TMI fact... drink enough Guinness and the next day you'll lay a black cable! I'm from the UK and will drink 6 - 8 pints of Guinness on a night out, no probs.

Wine at home though.

How much beer are we talking about? 2 cans, 2 bottles, 2 pints? I'm assuming it's how your body is reacting to carbonation or whatever gases that are released. For me, I looove me a porter or Trappist ale, but not on an empty stomach as it feels like more gas is produced.

I'm guessing Irish car bombs or boiler-makers are out of the question.

its usually halfway or at the end of my second bottle or glass that i begin to feel it, i just need to belch i guess, but belching has never come easy for me, sometimes i belch while im talking, which is nice, but i usually have to force down another beer before it happens, then i become legendary with my 'howling barf-burp'

irish car bombs, are fine i think, but i havent had many in a row to really push it

I'm not much of a drinker. I come from Kansas, where the beer is 3.2% alcohol and tastes like cold dishwater. Dark beer or stout, even in small amounts, always leaves me with a headache. I'd much rather drink Scotch, when I drink at all. Or wine mixed with club soda or tonic.

I can't drink hard liquor very often because it really makes me sick/I act like a fucking tool. So I stay away from it. That's about it.

Myself, I really enjoy a nice light meal and a couple white beers.

Most mass-produced American beer tastes like piss, but there are plenty of smaller-scale American beers that taste delicious.

You'll be able to drink again, in small amounts, someday, after your stomach has had time to heal. But your stomach won't stay healed if you drink too much, especially hard A. Personally, that tears my stomach up more than anything else.

Managing acid reflux means taking a lot of things in moderation.

As stated in the earlier posts, an allergy could be the reason for not being able to consume beer. I can't drink more than one beer, my throat closes up and I can't even swallow a glass of water for about a half hour, so I stick to Scotch. My daughter has Celiac's disease which prevents her from consuming any wheat produce, so beer is out of the question for her (she even has a reaction when her fiancee kisses her after he has a beer).

When I was younger I could drink anything, as much as I wanted it. Im talking about mixing vodka, tequila, whisky, beer, all in a night and feeling great the next day.

As I got older, I could stand a lot less.

In fact, one of the things I started having is exactly what you are experiencing. Depending on what drinks I had, or what drink/food combination I had, I would feel this pressure in my stomach, cold sweats, and a feeling like I was about to throw up, but I never did.

Turns out, it was exactly what you described: gas pressuring the stomach. I figured out that if I had beer and soda in a short period of time, I had that. Or if I had beer and lots of cheese as well.

Now I just watch what i drink if Im drinking beers at a relatively fast pace.

And if the discomfort comes back, I just take tums with antigas or something like that.

Hmmm, I get the gas dippin speaks of when I drink beer but not soda.

I've been sober for the last 2 years. I have had a drink or so. I have had seven shots of tequila at a go. I have had 4 bottles of beer. I have come to a conclusion.

Alcohol is bad, Mkay!!!

I take back what I said earlier about it being an "acquired" taste. I never acquired it!!!

No seriously, I never got "high" or "tipsy". Just really uncomfortably sick. I never barfed in the morning but that's maybe because I never drank enough which is fine. I'll just go without drinking any more alcohol. The taste is horrible anyway.
