Tilted Decor

No I'm not gay, but it would be okay if I was.

This thread is here for people to ask questions or make suggestions about decorating. Looking for a TV stand to go with your new plasma tv? This might be a good place to look for suggestions. See a beautiful spread in Sunset magazine? Sweet, show us what you like and why. Have a quirky style? We'd all love to see it.

I'll start. I was recently looking for a centerpiece for my bedroom (I currently have the bedroom of a college student, seriously it's bad). While I'd like to center the room around my bed, to be frank there isn't room for more than one seat. My second thought was some sort of media stand. Since all my my clothes are in the closet, either hanging or in the built in chest, it seems to make sense to have the TV act as the focal point.

Being an insane liberal eco-nut, I was hoping for something made of bamboo. And then I found it:

It's beautiful. Really, as soon as I saw it I knew that it was exactly what I was looking for. Yes, it's quite expensive, but I saved a ton by buying the 2001 Jetta instead of a new car, so I've got some money left over.

Thoughts?

Do you have any idea how many pandas they killed just to make that thing?

Willravel 10-01-2008 08:07 PM

It was built by pandas. And they have a good union, so don't worry.

Yea, Chinese slave labor!

That being said, I just can't justify spending that much on furniture that doesn't have a top notch finish to it. $1100 difference for a natural vs. a quickie stain finish just doesn't tickle my fancy. To be honest, I prefer the look of the natural piece more.

Okay, will. It is beautiful, however, a TV set as a focal point? No. You have better taste than that.

That piece is plain monstrous for your small bedroom. Maybe I just don't get the idea of a bulletin board behind the TV? :p Get yourself a minimalist bamboo unit. Much better.

How about some dimensions, placement of the door, closet, windows and size of bed?

LOL, yes I know. Still, the room is roughly 15'x15'. Considering that I'm just barely making it with a queen sized bed (so I can't get any smaller), there's surprisingly little room. I originally wanted to make my reading chair the focal point, put up some shelves so I can bring my whole library into my room (classy, eh?), and even get a really nice lamp for reading, but there isn't room. I don't want to make my small computer desk the focal point, mainly because I'll be tossing my old college desk before too long. That leaves TV, bed, Roland piano, or maybe a door. The bed already is right in the middle of things, but pointing chairs at the bed looked really funny. Really, you should try it, it looks funny. I loled. No, I wasn't drinking.

You have a point. I wanted something interesting looking, but I don't like having a busy room. I like simplicity. It's why I have gray walls.

You've changed my mind. I think I'll put this in, and hang the new plasma (my lcd got stolen, long story) above it. I'll run the cables in the wall. Thanks!

I'll have to post a makeshift birds' eye view when I get home.

If you use lower shelves and leave space above for some artwork, the furniture won't have to be a focal point and will help keep it from feeling too closed in by tons of big and bulky furniture. This just for the idea of another possible concept.

Or even a bunch of these might be cool: Conceal Invisible Floating Bookshelf

Just tryin' to make you crazy.

Ah, ghosts! Those floating book shelves are really eye catching. Nice.

But now you are obligated to post pics of whatever you do.http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/...tongue0015.gif

I am sorry to say I don't like the stand much at all! I don't like the colour of the wood, it's too dark and heavy. I don't like the handles on the drawers either, or the hollow shelf.

Willravel 10-02-2008 10:56 AM

A lot of people like nude oak right now, but I've had a nude oak theme since I was in high school so it would feel somewhat like more of the same if I went in that direction. Also, oak takes a really long time to grow back. I went with cherry in the living room (because it makes the piano look really good), but for my room I want to be a bit more green. The hollow shelf will have a receiver and dvr sandwiching some old books. I like the old/new coupling. The handles can be replaced if I see them in person and don't like them.

I like dark and heavy, though, it makes me feel like an adult (not that those who have different tastes aren't adults, of course).

Is that what the focal point is about? I should make my focal point a towel on the floor outside the bathroom.
