Inclement weather: what do you do?

So, we're getting a hurricane here.
Welcome to Florida, surprise!!!
I think the biggest surprise was the expectation up until the 5pm report that we'd get some rain and gusty winds around 35 mph.
Imagine my look of amazement when the latest reports estimate 75 mph sustained winds and the eye hitting 24 miles south of my condo... as the crow flies.
We live 3 miles from the beach and 1.5 miles from the Intracoastal Waterway.
Right in the path of the emergency evacuations... though we don't have to leave until category 3.

In 2004, we got hit by all 5 hurricane effects including 5 days without power, two that I couldn't leave the house because of water to the thigh.
We were bored. Period.
There's only so much you can do with no air conditioning in the summer and no power.
So I'm turning to the wisest of the TFP... tell me, what do you do when you can't go out and it's 95 degrees inside. And dark.

**Other than the obvious, of course. Carnal activities are a given and alcohol WILL be involved.

Well, I just left a comment on your blog that about summed up what we do. The PacNW does not get hurricanes, of course, but we do get raging windstorms come winter that knock out the power, sometimes for hours, and we are forced to entertain ourselves during that time. Last time, I ran to the store right before the power went out--it literally went out while I was staring at the flashlights--got 2 bottles of wine, beer, crackers, and flashlights. When I got back, we rigged up one of the flashlights to shine on our foosball table, and we had some friends over to play foosball. Had a great time. Then we played cards for a while, and got stoned. We also have a selection of board games, but the power came back on before we got into those.

If it goes out again this winter, we're super-prepared; my dad got us a flashlight that is on a tripod--perfect for aiming at the foosball table. We also have headlamps now, and I've got a radio with a CD player that runs on batteries.

I've been sitting here all day waiting for this hurricane. Nada.

I have all my provisions on hand, though. I double-checked everything this morning and then sat down to watch some movies.

We are being hit with a lot of flooding lately here too, thankfully I live quite high above sea level which offers some sort of comfort.
Its my friend's who live 'downtown' that I worry for.

After Floyd hit North Carolina in '99, my mom and I sat in the car and ran the A/C to get some heat relief (gas was $1.69 a gallon, so it wasn't a big deal). We also broke curfew and drove around surveying the damage (yes, I know we shouldn't have). We played cards...and the power came back on at 7 pm, so we were powerless a whole 16 hours. Not too shabby.

I generally just light some candles, fire up the fireplace if the weather is cool. Chill out, read or play board games. I live in Minnesota though, outside of the possibility of tornadoes, snow/rain storms, hail and the occasional flat-line winds there really isn't much that I face. No rivers nearby my home to worry about flooding. It does definitely suck being without power in the wintertime for any length of time.

But of course. We have scrabble on the iPod touch.
That's a typical Friday night.

It's all about eating drinking and being merry, preferably with as many friends as possible. Lay in a good supply of food, booze and batteries, batten down the hatches and hang out with your friends. And don't forget Chalatan's suggestion.

That sucks -- I hope everything turns out ok from the hurricane and no life and limbs are lost.

As for what I'd do... read a good book? Haven't really done that lately. Or bust out the board games. Read some more. Sex?

Vigilante 08-19-2008 08:19 PM

I go bike riding, or just relax and watch the storm pass by.

Sex sometimes, or a solo session if she's not in the mood LOL

Very good... why mess with the schedule? And the iPod makes it portable!

Sex *and* Scrabble!!!

Howdy Neighbor! It's still pouring and gusty here. About 10 or 12" rain so far since yesterday.

Board games, card games, TV (when cable works), minor kitten abuse (putting clothing on them and treating them like Barbie dolls) ... This time we've been lucky enough not to have suffered any loss of power, so I've been cooking a lot.

Oh and listening to music. The girls and I actually hung out on the family room floor and listened to the whole Dark Side of the Moon CD. :D

Nice. I need to get that one again, lost my old tape.

I'm soooooooooooooo dressing up the cats tomorrow, jewels!
I actually have most of the day off tomorrow... just a few things to catch up on.
They're predicting 20" of rain. Yeah, man.
I'm rockin' out Madonna now, much to the annoyance of the cats and my SO.
Like A Virgin vs. Marco Benevento...

We also stopped and got the entire Alien series. Since it's also my bday weekend, it's ON.

Inclement weather? What is this thing you speak of? The closest thing that I've dealt with in my neck of the woods were the wildfires last fall, and the most it really messed with was work got backed up for a day and a lot of our drivers couldn't come in. Otherwise no matter the "weather" daily habits change not a bit.=)

Fotzlid 08-20-2008 09:16 PM

Its been a long time since we had a hurricane up this way. We do get snow bound once in awhile, though thats usually not for more than a day. Annoying the dog is usually amusing for about 10 hours then we have plenty of DVD's once that gets old.

My hammock is gone, but I used to go out and lie in it under the trees until I started hearing thunder, then switch to a lawn chair. Being under the triangle of three trees in my yard keeps me dry in all but the worst typical storms, and it's relaxing to watch a storm roll in.

Cernunnos 08-21-2008 10:52 AM

Read books, listen to music, watch the storm, sleep. Without air conditioning, any sort of physical activity is unpleasant besides swimming, and you don't want to be out there during the lightning strikes.

Aside from the heat, that sounds like a nice break from things.
