How can you tell if you have any singing talent or not???

Hey there...I was talking in a chat room with a few ppl and somehow the subject of singing came up...I think it started with us talking about music and then someone said that they're brother is a singer or something...ANYWAYS a couple of other ppl was wondering if they had any singing talent...they said that they sing all the time like in their cars and stuff...one said that he could sing almost like Hetfield and other singers...you know like James Hetfield (Metallica), Tommy Dee (Holochaust aka Darcane), Aaron Lewis (Staind), Dave Draiman (Disturbed) ETC...now I don't sing anywhere but in my car...I crank up the volume in my Mustang and end up singing to myself...I don't know if it's the volume of the music or if I can make my voice sound 90%-100% like whoever I am listening to...

so we all started talkin about it and me and someone else was wondering if there was like a place or website where you leave your voice or something and then someone discovers you that way...or is there some other way to get noticed...I am in college right now and aren't really looking for a job or anything so I won't be out looking for a band to sing in or anything unless someone really likes my voice and there's lotz of money involved...LOL...but the others ARE looking for jobs andd some would like to be in a band someday...but since I'm not actively looking for a job or anything I was just gonna have my singing float around somewhere and see if anyone wants me or anything...also I want a job that involves computers...so I won't be singing in a band unless they really want me to...

but for the other guys is there a place to goto that they could go to or search???? They don't know where to start...and two know how to play the guitar...I am learning to play the guitar...but it's going slowly cause of the many computer games I play...LOL....so any help for me or the other guys would be nice...THANX

Listen to a song with headphones and record yourself singing along to it. If you cringe when you listen to the recording, then you suck.

Well I don't know about the others but I have two Metallica mp3's (Note to Kirk: Don't worry...I have the CD :D) and they have Jaymz's voice edited out...I don't have a microphone but if I sang along I almost sound like James...I need a microphone...I bet I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between my recording and James'...so what would that mean???

Then you are probably fine for rock music. I am damn near tone deaf myself, but I didn't realize just how bad I was until I heard a recording of myself singing. I hope you have better luck than me.

Bear in mind that what you hear when you listen to yourself sing is almost certainly going to sound different to what you sound like recorded. Greg700 is right - make a recording and have a listen. It's quite sobering :)

Oh, and being in a band will also certainly not involve lots of money ;) The trick is to find like-minded people to jam with and see if you enjoy it. If you don't, get out, and fast.

you sing, and strangers complement you.

it might help to enter some amateur contest.
even if you don't win, but come in 2nd or 3rd, etc,
this might let you know.

Haha, My dad is a pretty good singer/guitar/piano player and whever he hears himself he's like 'thats awful!' I'm hear myself singing on a recording and its horrid, but I know I cant sing. I've been told numerous times :)

It's possible that you do sing as good as you think you do, but if you haven't recorded yourself singing you'll never know :)

Dorkums642 06-28-2003 06:40 AM

if you need to ask if you have a good singing voice then you probably don't have one. I don't ask cause i know i don't :)

Someone'll notice and point it out to you. If they never say anything then you probably suck (like me).

Regardless, there's always karaoke night SOMEwhere

ratbastid 06-28-2003 06:52 AM

Acoustically, physically, the sound that reaches your ears when you produce the noise is different from the sound that reaches other people's ears when you produce the noise. For your voice to reach your ears, it vibrates the bones of your skull, resonates inside your sinus cavity, etc.

It could very well be that inside your own head, you can make a sound that's a lot like some famous singer. That means nothing in terms of what the rest of us will hear.

By all means, record yourself and listen to it. Just be prepared to be horrified. Not that you're necessarily a bad singer, just it won't soundlike what you expect.

Do the kareoke thing at some bar.If your good, people will respond. If your not,it provides a good laugh for everyone, that is if you can laugh at yourself.

PornAddict 06-28-2003 10:23 AM

you can plug your ears and sing, and get a pretty good idea if you are good or not.

Now that's funny lol.

You dont want to sound like others especially Hetfield but you want to hit the notes. An easy way to get an understanding of your ability is to try out for a choir. Theyll usually let you in either way but you will get a fair opinion of your talent and being involved in a choir helps you to develop your abilities.

Can you sing in key?

Schwan 06-29-2003 03:09 AM

Singing to your records or Karaoke is a good idea to get a general feel of the process, but it doesn't really tell you if you can sing, because you KNOW how the song is supposed to go. The real trick is to sing to new melodies - create your own melody line for your vice, try different scales. If you don't know any musicians willing to play music for you to sing to, try to get some music without vocals - like jazz, though it might be hard to sing to Jazz at first because of the cord progressions, etc. If singing along to new music comes to you with ease and is fun, then hey, you can sing  !

Motorbreath 06-29-2003 04:21 PM

where did u get that MP3 with james' voice edited out?

asudevil83 06-29-2003 04:37 PM

me...i can only sing to certains songs. the tone has to be just right. anything else just sounds like shit.

two songs i know i can sing...

Bush Glycerine (spelling)
Foo Fighters Everlong (i can sing both versions, but acoustic is the best)

Antagony 06-29-2003 04:58 PM

Yeah, you'll want to check your vocal range also.

A lot of people (myself included) can sing pretty well as long as the song is within a certain range on the scale, but whenever it's time to go outside that range ... major suckage.

You should record yourself singing to several different genres. Songs that sound nothing alike.

rockzilla 06-29-2003 05:53 PM

Like gibber said, go out to a karoke bar, no matter how bad you are, there's probably someone worse coming up next, even if you don't get a standing ovation, you might not be that bad. One of my best friends sings in a band, and he doesn't always raise the roof at karaoke.

Bobaphat 06-29-2003 09:56 PM

go Karaoke with some friends and see what their reaction is. The reality is that you'll never get discovered unless you're actively out there persuing a singing career in a band or something. Also, you don't sound 90% like the guy singing on the radio, you're just dilusional.

Metallica_Band 06-30-2003 01:53 AM

ok...I sent a link to the ppl I was talking to to this thread and a few have tried out some of the recording suggestions...one says that he foundout that he sux at singing...LOL...guess it was all in his head...another says that he still doesn't know...he can't tell so he is gonna send me a recording of him singing some Metallica song I think and he wants me to find someone to host it or maybe I could just get another person I know to hack into a website and stick the mp3 in there...anyways I'll leave u a link to his mp3 to see what you ppl think about...and another guy said that he actually does do a good job singing...at least that's what his wife says...LOL...what else is she gonna say? "Damn honey, your voice makes my ears hurt!"...LOL...as for me I don't have a microphone or anything to record my voice on...all I have is headphones with a little microphone attached to it...it was cheap and I don't think it would do good at recording someones voice...any suggestion on what I should get? THANX

Just sing because it is fun! There are no rules about who gets to sing and who does not!
Sing alot and you will get better, you may not have the voice you would like to have but different voices are all interesting in their own way.

QuasiMojo 06-30-2003 08:49 PM

If you see people at the karaoke bar grimace when you sing....
is a pretty good indication that you may not be....ummm
"sonically available"

Myself, I've no range. On a range of 1(being bass) and 10(being the hiiiiiigh note) I can sing from 3 to 3.3. I blame it on cigarretes.
