thinking a Career at canada post

I have been working at a local electronics store for the last 5 years as the sales manager(I run the whole store). I make good money, but work 9 hours a day 6 days a week, and the job has its stressful moments. On the odd slow day I get to sit and watch tv which is one main perk of the job, Along with good deals on electronics. But all and all im fed up and looking for something new

My question is to anyone who works at Canada post as a mail carrier, How do u like the job? I have been offered a job from my Girlfriends father. He is a supervisor at the post office in my town and says he could keep me local so i wouldnt have to travel. The job pays $24 an hour to start and i would only have to work 40 hours a week with weekend and holidays off. And i heard if you are sticking with the job as a career you can retire with full pension after 35 years.

So any input i can get on the job would be greatly appreciated thanks

The first thought that comes to mind is - outdoors in the winter.
Where in Canada are you located? Is a lot of time outdoors an issue for you?

24 an hour to start seems pretty good to me, at 40 hours a week thats about 50,000 a year.

I agree with sticky on the winter thing, but I suppose that depends on what position you will be working.

My friend's dad was a letter carrier when I was a kid. Other than the fallen arches and the limited income, he had a pretty sweet job.

Pros: government job so good pension and benefits; union job so management can't mess with you; you get to be outdoors and active while you work so exercise benefits. The two people I ever knew who did this work loved it, both of them despised office environments and liked to be active.

Cons: the weather in winter can be rough, but usually on really bad days they don't deliver the mail anyway. The union/management situation is supposedly very tense and can spill into the work environment. be prepared to be publicly pro-union.

How important is your relationship with your Girlfriend and her Father and what is your future together?

If you bail on the job after a short time without giving it a good effort, you'll lose a lot of respect in his eyes.

Or the other way around:
If the relationship does not work out, do you still want to be working for her father.

I do love the outdoors, but carrying 50lbs of mail and walking in a foot of snow doesnt sound that fun...so im not sure how thats going to be. The only other thing holding me back is the fact i will be working for my Gf's father and like fresnelly and sticky said if one goes bad the other will get really awkward. Im still pretty sure im going to do it. I have been looking for a change and I think this might be it.
