Seriously need some advice.

Hi there. Before anything, i'll like to tell u that this is regarding my studies, so yeah, cheesy as hell. Anyhow here's my prob; i've passed my high-school exam with good results, and my parents pushed me to apply to this college in australia, for an engineering diploma, and well, i got accepted. But the thing is, i'm quite dumb academically, and thanks to my local low standard of education, i basically don't have any quality in me, academically speaking, esp in hard science subject, like maths or physics...not that i don't like these subjects, but i just don't get them...now, that i've been offered a place in the program, should i go? I mean, say if once i got there, i study everyday, and do all those type of crap, will i be able to cope?

Seriously, only you know the answer to that. We can't really help you.

You sound like you're full of self-doubt, but somehow you got accepted. Give that some real time and thought.

Good luck! Let us know, okay?

Nisses 05-07-2008 01:32 AM

Here's another idea:

What's the worst that can happen if you accept and are *not* able to cope?

You *lose* a year? Trust me, there are worse things in life than trying for something, even if in the end you don't make it. If that's the case, you'll be surprised at the things you *do* end up remembering and using in your life later on.

I say if you are backed financially, go for it!

I'm not buying into the "i'm quite dumb academically" and the " i basically don't have any quality in me, academically speaking" comments. Reason being...although it may not come as easily, nor as naturally, to you as it does for others, it can and will come, if you work at it. Look...I'm no math whiz, by anyone's standards. I have to work at it. I always have.

Like Nisses sais..."What's the worst that can happen?" You try...you fail...you try something else. At least you tried. But, that's key. You have to try. You can't just go and screw off. Do that, and I guarantee failure. Go and give it a shot. I think that if you put the effort into it, you just might surprise yourself.

Anyone who tries in college will get a degree regardless of your intelligence. If you get in, you can pass. The people who can't "cope" are those who don't try. And trust me, a majority of people in college don't try and end up failing out. Try and you will get the degree.

The only way to get smarter is to try.

The world needs ditch diggers too.

Of course I don't really mean that.

College is nowhere near as hard as you think it is. It's only slightly more difficult than high school.

petre 05-08-2008 01:19 AM

urm..the thing is, the college is in australia, and u all know how good the australians are in their education, i mean, i honestly was surprised that they answered my application in the 1st place, maybe they and u guys don't know how low-standard my exams are, i mean, i don't know crap about calculus and math in general, but still they gave an A in maths...what's that all about??

Anyhow, u guys really make me feel a bit more confident regarding this, so, i'm going to tell my parents to send me for it. Maybe, who knows, i'll get someone smart there as a frend and he/she could teach me stuff. Again, thanks guys for ur seemingly great words of advice. Have a nice day y'all.:)

lotsofmagnets 05-08-2008 04:28 AM

did you have to pass a test to get in? they obviously saw something in your application which made them accept it so go for it. the reward in a good challenge is success!!

sidenote: i have a bachelor of mechanical engineering from monash in au and when i came to the university of iceland and told them that everyone seems pretty keen to have me there to do my masters. i´m not going to lie and say the degree was easy but i have it :)

thespian86 05-08-2008 05:55 AM

You got in.

Enough said.

petre 05-08-2008 06:16 AM

wow lotsofmagnets, thats exactly the uni i've applied to, though mine is the college wing of it, but anyhow, its monash college. And yeah, i'll be paying for tuitions anyway, how hard could it be?

Life is hard, be harder.

Have you thought about trade school? College isn't for everyone. Plumbers, mechanics, and others, survive trade school in less time than college graduates and have great lives.

State your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours.

I find that a lot of people look at a goal, and they see a towering mountain.
I look at a goal, and I look around to find where to plant my foot for that first step.

Now go foward and DO!

Yep. I know a girl who's not particularly bright (typical blonde space cadet) yet managed to finish a degree in industrial engineering with stellar grades simply because she knew how to keep her head down, keep working hard, and jump through those hoops.

Seer666 05-27-2008 12:25 PM

It's fucking Australia! GO!! GO NOW!!

petre 06-02-2008 11:19 PM

hehe thanks yall, but honestly, it was my mistake in the 1st place to be applying for an engineering course..i mean, not a single person in my whole extended family is anything close to being good in maths, let alone engineering maths.Maybe my high school results got into my head...darn it.

In my school years, the maximum mark i've achieved in school-sponsored exam for Additional maths was 43%...i don't know whats the grade for that, maybe f or h...maybe worse.

Anyhow, can't be lame and wail all the time, i'm pretty sure if i get thru my degree, i'll be fine for life, if not, most probably my family will disown me:expressionless:

Regardless, howcome college is so darn expensive? Shouldn't education be free or close to that or something? My whole college fees including all necessary expenditure would be around 150k AUD, which translate into ~140k USD which translates to 500k Malaysian money. Darn rite expensive if u ask me...average salary for malaysians are around 3k per month.

God help me.
