What to wear?

OK, I need some fashion advice. I am taking this girl to a nice restaurant for Valentine's day. Problem is I am not sure what I should wear. This dress code is from the restaurant itself:

Quote:

We do not allow jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes or shorts. Jacket or tie is preferred but not required
So what do you think? Should I go with a full out suit? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Bear Cub 02-08-2008 05:59 PM

It wouldn't hurt to go with the full suit. She may be equally impressed that you went to that extent just for her!

noodle 02-08-2008 06:03 PM

khakis or the like, button-down shirt, dinner jacket. Nice shoes. SANS tassels!

Grancey 02-08-2008 08:14 PM

go with the suit

ngdawg 02-08-2008 09:19 PM

Suit=sexy

evilbeefchan 02-08-2008 09:30 PM

Suit, if you got one. What else do you have in your wardrobe?

Willravel 02-08-2008 09:42 PM

Tilted
Men's
Style.
Don't people do searches?

BTW, black suit with a white oxford. And bring one of her favorite flowers.

levite 02-09-2008 06:24 AM

Suit up.

If it turns out you're the only guy in the restaurant who showed up in a suit, it just looks like you came right to dinner from your high-power job making assloads of cash. On the other hand, if you go with something like khakis and a polo shirt, and everyone else shows up in suits, you're going to look like you came right to dinner from your minimum-wage job working in the mailroom for any of the other guys in the restaurant.

Suit up.

Lubeboy 02-09-2008 06:27 AM

wear a leisure suit.

allaboutmusic 02-09-2008 08:38 AM

And wear a nice dress watch.

Fotzlid 02-09-2008 10:37 AM

Wear a suit only if you're comfortable wearing one, otherwise you're probably going to be tugging at the collar or adjusting the jacket or other things like that. If you're not comfortable in a suit, it will show.

Sorry, but thats the lamest reason I've seen for wearing a suit.

Redlemon 02-09-2008 10:48 AM

Overdressed is always better than underdressed. With the exception of what Fotzlid said just above me.

World's King 02-09-2008 11:03 AM

There is no reason to wear a full suit... But you should.

Stay away blue or black. Find a nice dark gray suit. No double breasted. Only David Letterman can pull that look off. Three or four buttons. And for the love of god make sure the pants are flat front. Pleats are the worst thing to ever happen to pants. Oh and no cuff. That makes me cringe. No white dress shirt. Find a good red wine or plum color. Black tie. No design. And if you can swing it... a little handkerchief in your front coat pocket that doesn't match anything. Black shoes. Make sure they are freshly shined. And as an added touch... find socks that match your handkerchief. I'm thinking lime green.

If you're over 18, you should be comfortable in a suit by now. It's part of becoming a man.

Agreed. Although I did own at least 10 suits by the time I was 16.

I disagree. I've owned 3 suits in my life and hated each one of them. Haven't owned one since my 20's. Don't even own a tie either.

Do you rent? Or do you just not go anywhere fancy? I can't imagine not needing a suit.

World's King 02-09-2008 11:52 AM

I can see not owning a suit (even though it makes no sense) but why would someone not own a tie?

Fotzlid 02-09-2008 12:28 PM

I have no use for them.
I do have some nice clothes for those social situations where jeans/t-shirt are not appropriate.

Same. I've never owned a suit nor do I see a need for one. I've worn one once a few years ago and just felt uncomfortable in it. I have enough fancy attire to make up for the lack of one.

allaboutmusic 02-09-2008 12:58 PM

It probably depends on your social circle, doesn't it? In my current job, I wear a suit more frequently in a week than I did in a year when I first graduated... back then I never went to social occasions which demanded anything more than a smart shirt, nice jeans and smart shoes.

Shauk 02-09-2008 01:02 PM

I don't own a suit. Then again it's cost prohibitive for one such as myself.

See this makes perfect sense. I had a $200 suit all through college that I feel was so cheap it was counter productive. If suits don't fit in your price range, then it seems perfectly reasonable not to have one.

Hain 02-09-2008 01:59 PM

My friend and I blatantly stole this from what I now know to be this show:
Suit up!

Yes I know that I bring nothing to this conversation, other than... "Suit up!"

Willravel 02-09-2008 02:07 PM

I should sue them for stealing my likeness.

snowy 02-09-2008 02:23 PM

I'm going to agree with the suit sentiments.

There is something about a man in a suit that just...makes my knees weak.

pig 02-09-2008 02:50 PM

Hold up. You need to know the decor of the restaurant in general. Some places are 'no jeans, no t-shirts...' but still aren't necessarily full on suit up worthy. Others are. I'll break out a reasonable suit if I know that the venue is going to be appropriate, and that my date is going to be similarly dressed.

Even if you are the only guy in a suit in the restaurant, you can pull it off if your date is dressed to match. The only negative is looking like y'all only go on reasonable dates / meals once a year, and on that time, by damn, you're going full to the nines.

To repeat: make sure the place is such that both of you won't be out of place dressed up....and assuming that's the case, then go all out. You'll never go wrong by showing more class than less.

Wait... I figured you always wear a pair of Chuck's... how do you compromise when wearing a suit?

Yeah. I don't have many friends that are into clothes in general.
We all wear what fits and whats comfortable.

Chucks around the house and to run basic errands. Suits to work, dinner, parties, funerals, etc.

It's in how you carry yourself. If you speak and act like you should be wearing a suit, people will assume that's just how you dress and won't look twice.

If you act all excited like you never get to dress up and never get to eat out in nice places. Then you'll look a bit out of place.

You wear shoes inside the house?

Sure. The thermo is set at 65F during the winter to be more energy efficient, so they keeps my toes warm. Not only that, but they really don't track stuff in.

BTW, Chucks are also really great for long-distance driving.

Huh, I was thinking towards a two button navy suit with dark brown shoes.

Willravel 02-09-2008 05:43 PM

Unnamed, what's your build, complexion, hair color, etc?

And please don't wear lime green socks.

Our culture makes wearing shoes inside the house....wild. We never go past the front door closet in shoes and if we do (which happens in extreme cases where we forgot something and have little time to take the shoes off and put them on again), it is done with great guilt cause we've been told all our lives not to do it. *shrug*

Willravel 02-09-2008 05:49 PM

My house, my rules. I have no problem keeping my house clean.

LoganSnake 02-09-2008 05:53 PM

Sure, but I'm keeping that tradition when I get my own place.

unnamedplayer 02-09-2008 06:37 PM

I'm 5'9'' 145lbs, white, with brown hair.

You're comfortable in a suit right? If yes, do you own a suit?
