Just how poor is 20/100 vision?

OK, So I've started down the road to becoming a gubbment employee, but one requirement is that my vision be better than 20/100 uncorrected. It's been years since I've been to the optometrist, and will be a couple weeks before I can get to one, so in the meantime, can anyone give me some examples of how bad my vision would be for it to be 20/100?

If it helps, I can just barely read this at arm's length without my glasses.

Bossnass 12-17-2007 07:01 PM

Generally you approximately see can something at 20 yards that an average person can see at 100. 20/100 is pretty bad.

Willravel 12-17-2007 07:01 PM

All I can give you is what google is likely to tell you. 20/100 is you can see at 20 feet what most people can see at 100 feet.

Go get tested.

Plan9 12-17-2007 07:17 PM

Hahaha, that's how bad I was before PRK. WAY bad.

Measure the height of the E in inches. Multiply that dimension by 2.838, then sit that many feet away. (example: if it's 2", sit 5'8" away)

If you can read the 20/100 line, that is your vision, so if you want vision that is better than that, hope you can read the third line.

Why do they always use pseudo-serif fonts on those things? Make it all hard 'n stuff. Jeez.

blktour 12-17-2007 07:28 PM

without my glasses i couldnt read big off ramp signs till i passed them... haha

but can you read your speedometer without squinting? if you can't, thats bad.

you will probably have about -3.00 + on each eye. (contacts, maybe.)

How on earth did you diagnose that estimate with the information present in this thread?

didnt diagnose it. just guessing. I consider myself pretty blind and i can still see in front of me, ( arms length.) but i am a -2.00 and my sister cannot read her speedometer when she doesnt have her glasses and she is about -3.50 or so.

World's King 12-17-2007 08:02 PM

All I know is if I take off my glasses I can't see fuck all...

ShaniFaye 12-18-2007 04:06 AM

Im a -8.00 in one eye and a -8.25 in the other, if you take my glasses away from me I cant read anything more than 5 inches away from my eyes

the highest I can find right now in a quick search is that 20/800 is a -6.00

so Im blinder than that, I've been wearing glasses since I was 6

What is the reason that you have to be better than 20/200 without correction to be an employee of the government?

ngdawg 12-18-2007 05:04 AM

Wow, Shani! I'm a -3.5 and -3.75 and I can't see for shit....my son is, if I recall, -4.25 and -4.5. He has to wear really small-framed glasses to avoid having coke-bottle lenses.
When I wear a current prescription, for some odd reason, my eyesight goes to 20/15, but I don't know what it is without them.
If I take my glasses off and look at that eyechart just sitting about two feet away, I can't read the bottom two lines.

ShaniFaye 12-18-2007 05:06 AM

lol yeah....my vision sucks....I cant even see that great big E on the computer screen if Im more than 2ish feet away

I dunno, but I assume it has to do with the possibility of me having my eye wear knocked off in a scuffle or something. (It's a law enforcement position.)

And thanks for all the responses everyone.

ShaniFaye 12-18-2007 05:57 AM

ahhh I was thinking "government office work" for some reason.....now it makes more sense

TotalMILF 12-18-2007 05:59 AM

I was about 20/100 before I got LASIK in July. I had to wear glasses for everything but reading.

Now I'm 20/15 :D The only glasses I have to wear are my polarized sunglasses

Just go get an eye exam. Go to a Lenscrafters or something because they'll usually give you a free exam if you express intent to possibly purchase contacts or eyeglasses.

Redlemon 12-18-2007 06:05 AM

Do I win? I'm at about -13 in both eyes. My clear vision point is 1 inch off the tip of my nose. I'm also not a candidate for surgery due to thin retinas.

ShaniFaye 12-18-2007 06:13 AM

Damn RL, I thought I was bad.....question for you....do you hear better with or without your corrective lenses? lol I swear if I dont have my glasses on I have a hard time understanding people talking to me....its like Im deaf if I cant see their lips move (makes it harder that I actually only have 1/4 hearing in one ear)

I have no idea. The first thing I do when I wake up is put on my glasses, and shortly after that I replace them with the gas permeable contacts. The contacts stay in until I go to bed. I have perfect vision when wearing my contacts.

On the flip side, I suck at reading lips, so I hate noisy environments like bars.

ShaniFaye 12-18-2007 06:42 AM

ahhh..I dont wear contacts so when my glasses are off (like when getting my hair done) I have the hardest time hearing lol

highthief 12-18-2007 07:48 AM

Two words for you:

Laser surgery

IdolGirl 12-19-2007 07:57 PM

when I have my contacts out/glasses off, my vision is 20/800. I can see at 20 feet what normal sighted people can see at 800 feet away. In other words, I am blind as a bat. (damn you, astigmatism!!!!!! :grumpy: )

I have the same problem-can't hear as well if I don't have the glasses on. I can't read lips very well either, so I don't know if it's habit or what. Perhaps it's because if I don't see them looking my way, I don't listen?

Once, my optometrist showed me my lenses before they were cut. The lens for my left eye was nearly half an inch thick at the edge. He said I should always purchase glasses with small lenses to minimize that coke-bottle effect. My right eye isn't nearly as bad as my left.

I have no idea what my vision is in numbers, but I do know I have astigmatism. Woo. I do have my numbers somewhere in a file, though, just in case my glasses shatter (unlikely) or the computer system at Binyons fails.

Infinite_Loser 12-19-2007 10:04 PM

I've got terrible eyesight. I *wish* I had 20/100 vision  Last I time I checked my vision was about 20/200. Seriously. I can't see worth shit without my glasses.

Willravel 12-19-2007 10:33 PM

IL, 20/200 is legally blind.

Are you sure about that? Because back when I was about -10 diopters, I was told that my vision could not be described in a "20/x" expression, but I was only halfway to "legally blind".

(goes and researches)

Aha, the rule is "anyone with vision worse than 20/200 that cannot be improved with corrective lenses is considered legally blind". So, if your glasses work, you aren't legally blind.

Apologies, I should have been more specific. I was working off his last sentence where IL said he can't see without his glasses. So when he said "I can't see worth shit", he wasn't kidding.

ShaniFaye 12-20-2007 12:14 PM

I wish my vision was as good as 20/200
