Soft bedsheets

I hope Tilted Life is the right section to post this in:
So I'm thinking of getting my girlfriend new, soft bedsheets for us for the holidays. I was hoping to get some input. I know satin is very soft, but I've been hearing of "modal" which is supposed to be very soft too. I was wondering if anyone has experience with either, and any information about their breathability, ease of care, etc. Any input would be great!

All you'll need are sheets made from natural fibers with a high thread count.

and sometimes higher thread count doesn't mean better sheets.

1000 thread count is too high and really HOT.

satin, is soft, but if I recall correctly you need to care for it well, like either woolite or dry cleaning.

Caring for Satin Sheets
Satin sheets require more care than regular cotton sheets, particularly when it comes to washing.

General care: Satin made of silk and nylon should be shielded from the sun, so if you have a bright sunny room, go for acetate or polyester satin. However, if you intend to use massage oil, nylon may be your best bet because polyester doesn't hold up as well.

Washing: Washing and drying your sheets demands depend on the material:
(Note: It's best to just dry-clean satin bedspreads and satin comforters. They are impossible to hand-wash, and bunch up too much in a washer)
Acetate: Most woven acetate sheets should be dry-cleaned only, although you can usually hand-wash with an appropriate cleaner like Woolite in room temperature water. Heat is the enemy of acetate - do not use a dryer, even on delicate. Be careful when hand-wringing out water, never twist too hard as the material can tear or pull apart.

Polyester: Polyester is pretty much the most durable material. Similar care to nylon, but safe to line dry. Again, to avoid pilling, hand-wash when possible.

Nylon: Nylon is fairly durable, and is generally machine washable, even in a normal cycle. Use warm or cool water only, and go light on detergent. Never use bleach. Safe to use the dryer on lowest heat setting. Do not line dry nylon sheets, because the sun is nylon's enemy. Over a long time washing and drying nylon satin leads to pilling, so you may want to consider hand-washing your sheets in the bathtub if you can.

Silk: Treat pretty much the same as acetate, but be careful about line-drying as silk is more sensitive to sun-damage. Also, because silk is usually very thin, be especially careful when wringing out.
sateen is good as well, 200-300 thread count is a good fabric.

jersey cotton sheets were some of my favorites because they are the same as the cotton of your tshirts.

I've always been a fan of high thread count Egyptian cotton.

Just bought 100% cotton 300 thread count sheets. They are so yummy to sleep on although after washing they were a bit crinkled and I cant remember where the iron is to smooth them over. My advice try for natural fibre and try to dry them in the sun

I second egyptian cotten and high thread count (ours are 450) and they are SO comfy

Bamboo.
My sheets are 350 count bamboo from Target of all places and they only get better every time I wash them. I've had the same set for two years and I wash them every week. They're holding up great. Zero pilling, elastic is still great and they're softer than a baby's bottom.
I don't like stretchy sheets, which some of the modal types can be. I get stuck when I roll over.

I get Pure Beech sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond - they are SOOOOO soft, and I think they're that modal stuff. Like fred said, tho, they're a bit stretchy, which can be a good thing if you have a thick mattress or something. They can accommodate a bit more, y'know? I love them. I have three sets, and they've worn really well.

Quoted for absolute truth. These sheets are my favorites, so soft and so comfy!! :)

Modal, no question. Softest sheets I've ever felt and EASY to care for--they launder just like cotton. They're made from beech fiber, and they're AWESOME. She'll totally love them. They're all we use anymore. We have two sets and we alternate them.

The best sheets I ever had were from France.
600 thread ct. cotton, sateen finish. They have lasted for years and keep getting softer with age yet stay smooth crisp and cool.

There is a close-out type of store here in the U.S called Tuesday Mornings.
I would not have been able to afford them otherwise.

Those Modal sheets sound interesting.I don't know how the fibers hold up after time.

Kohls has Egyptian cotton sheets ranging from 100 to 1000 thread count, and you can find the best ones by unzipping the package and feeling the sheets because the highest aren't necessarily the best. I've never seen Modal sheets, but I have a shirt made of it and it's one of my favorites.

Fuck yes. Tuesday Morning is a great place to get all sorts of stuff.

cyklone 12-04-2007 09:51 PM

Forget satin, you slide all over the place and the pillow won't stay still. Go for really high thread count, cotton, over 400 if possible. You will never want to sleep on anything less again.

rlbond86 12-04-2007 11:40 PM

Well these are good suggestions! I am planning on feeling the sheets at BBB and apparently Target as well. Unfortunately no Tuesday Morning around here. If anyone else has experience with this stuff please chime in!

Based on Ratbastid's advice (or perhaps it was Lurkette, I don't recall), we went Modal a while ago. The first set I messed up by washing them with towels or something, I'm not sure, but they pilled. The new set, so far so good. Love them.
