Superior Computer Chairs

I'm a big fella who spends a lot of time in front of the ole computer. For the last few years I've been using chairs from OfficeMax something along the lines of this:

The problem is that every few months the padding on the chair collapses, and I'm sitting on the metal frame basically, which is wrecking havoc with my back. So instead of shelling out $150 every few months, do any of you have chair recommendations that might address the back problem issue?

Herman Miller Aeron

Will look at ergonomic chairs since foam cushions are the problem...never knew there were foamless cushion chairs. Thanks.

This is the chair I use at home with a 37" LCD HDTV as a monitor. Well, I wish I had a girl in her undies laying in my chair... But even without the girl, I highly recommend it.

Looks like an awesome chair to watch tv in. Is your LCD for TV or computer? I never thought to get a Lazy-Boy type chair for computer use, that'd be nice although I don't know if the kick-out would work with my desk, maybe too wide. The girl looks like Aria Giovanni.

Before you buy anything from La-Z-Boy, read this

I agree with debaser. I'm sitting on one of those things right now. It's pretty sweet.

Skutch 09-15-2007 04:47 PM

Question about the ergonomic chairs: is there any "give" to the seat bottom part you sit on? It looks like a rigid, nonmoving piece of metal screen. Am I wrong about this...why are they so comfortable and expensive? Thanks for the LazyBoy link...I don't think I could use one for computing.

The Aeron is an awesome chair. You nevr get hot and you can adjust it so many ways. I've had one at work and at home for 10 years now. Wouldn't trade it for a thing - other than Joey and Chandler's chair with the upgrades!

Cynthetiq 09-15-2007 05:46 PM

yes getting an Aeron soon. Have been planning on getting a pair of them for the past year just haven't gotten around to getting the configuration we want down pat.

So far, B, nonchrome, black, posturfit.

Mister Coaster 09-15-2007 05:49 PM

Great topic!

I'm guessing it works more or less like a hammock, but without all the unnecessary motion. Looks ike a good thing.

I know I need a new chair, both at home and at work.

I use it for both. I don't have a desk, since I don't really need one for anything. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that I can use while recilining in the chair. :)

I wouldn't recommend this setup for work however, unless you are the boss.

They are expensive because they are the best (sorry, not being coy). The "screen" you see is actually a kevlar mesh that is extremely comfortable without giving you that "bedsore" feeling you get from foam.

Heh heh. That's awesome!

I've got a herman miller Mirra.

I wanted something other than an Aeron because there's so many out there.

On the bright side, it's not a folding chair :)

Interesting recommendations! I've never tried one, but from what I've read, you can't go wrong with the Herman Miller recommended frequently above.

Right now I'm using a vintage (period) knock-off Eames lounger and ottoman. It's an odd combo, but it works well enough for me! I probably wouldn't recommend it, though.

Ditch the milk and turn it on it's side and you're more than good enough. You guys are so high maintenance.

I slept on a futon for 8 years. It taught me to appreciate things that help me stay healthy and comfortable.

The mirra is awesome. We had some loaners at our office that had more conventional fabric, and they were super comfy. So were the steelcase chairs, though in a different way.

Look to spend about $600 or so for a quality adjustable office chair.
