Moving to the Dallas-FortWorth area... maybe

Okay, I recently took a job with QuikTrip, I really like it and its a damn good job, however... I live in Tulsa which is its oldest market (for those who don't know QT is a convience store, an industry leader, it started in Tulsa in 1958, it now dominates the market, selling 42% of all gas in oklahoma [this while having 0 stores in Oklahoma city, the largest city in oklahoma] they are now spreading across the country, St Louis, Witchita, Phoniex and others but namely... Dallas) There is close to no chance of advancement in Tulsa, QT has the problems of a very successfull company with very loyal employees, no turn over and Tulsa is a stagnent market with no growth. I am considering the move to Dallas for better oppurtunitys BUT I have never lived anywhere but Tulsa, my ideas on money is really skewed (Tulsa has one of the lowest cost of livings in the country, you really have to work to find an apartment that costs OVER $1000, I mean really work) I need the honest no BS answer to how much I need to make there to live comfortably, which areas to avoid, which to covet... also what there is to do around there.

Dalls/FW was the stinkiest airport I've ever stepped foot in.

Avoid the airport. Check.

Agreed, the airport is terrible.

I just helped my cousin move there a few weeks ago - she lives in Mesquite, which seemed to be relatively nice. She has a pretty decent apartment - 2nd floor walkup, balcony directly over the pool, 12" ceilings, fitness center, ect - for $795 a month or so. Eating out there was relatively similar pricewise to here (Wisconsin) - but the traffic was a nightmare.

Dallas/Ft worth is a really nice area. I don't know much about Tulsa..but I almost moved to DFW myself about a year ago, ended up not going..and I regret it now. The cost of living there is significantly less than what I pay here in NY..so it was a great deal for me..

Your direct competition will be 7-11 which is based in Texas. I really don't recall if they had faithful customers or not.

Congrats on the job with QT - I live in the Phoenix area, and the frozen drinks are a lifesaver in the summer! I looked at D/FW when I graduated from college, the only thing that wasn't a positive for me was how high the property tax was (almost 1/3 the total mortage payment per month). However, there isn't any income tax in TX (if I remember correctly). It's a great place to live, as far as I could tell.

BTW, the airport isn't so bad if you're not connecting!

It really depends WHERE in DFW you plan to live. I'm living in Arlington right now, it's pretty much dead center between the two metroplexes. The cost of living here vs. downtown is huge, but even here there are luxury apts. for 1k/month or like me there are $560/month 1bedroom "nice" apartments. There are some places you don't want to go, but for the most part it's safe in the metroplex.

If you want you can PM me and I can help you out more.
