Look at yourself from the side

I'm wondering if people experience the same thing as me..

I know that I shouldn't care about what other people think of what I look like etc.. but I'm kind of self-conscious (trying to break the habit)

So... I'm used to looking at myself straight on in the mirror and am comfortable with that and how I look, but when I turn my head to the side or even worse, look in those multiple mirrors to see myself from the side, it's uncomfortable and I feel I look much different.. not in a good way :expressionless:

Am I the only one?

ngdawg 07-17-2007 09:22 PM

Nope. I have a very weak profile-nose stops short, chin is weak and I wear glasses which hide the angle from forehead to nose. At a time, I actually seriously considered a chin implant.
While most guys can't do this, I get my hair cut longer in the front, framing my chin to accent it more, but generally I can't stand how I look from the side.

abaya 07-18-2007 01:50 AM

Heh, I actually like my side profile more than my straight-on appearance... mostly because I have an overly round face and large head that only seems bigger from the front.

JustJess 07-18-2007 03:51 AM

(You are so wrong, abaya. :D )

Yeah, I actually hate my profile. It's like my features are barely on the surface of my skull. Ick.

Oh yeah??? Well, you're also so wrong. :D

Funny, how self-critical we can all be... when so many people look at us all day long, and probably never have a second thought about our "profile" or anything else. I suppose it's only our SO's that have to deal with it on a regular basis, and they don't seem to mind either. :)

dfence,

I'm with abaya because never really didn't bother with this issue in my life so far.

Thank you.

Jinn 07-18-2007 06:59 AM

Yea, my profile sucks.

Plan9 07-18-2007 09:32 AM

I look like Nicholas Cage from the waist up.

I look like Muppet Gonzo from the waist down.

highthief 07-18-2007 10:37 AM

I look great from all angles.

lurkette 07-18-2007 11:32 AM

I, too, hate my profile. I think I look squashed.

snowy 07-18-2007 11:40 AM

If most people look at me from the side, my breasts are so prominent they find it hard to look at anything else (so they tell me). I used to have a major posture problem where my ass also stuck out considerably due to spinal lordosis, but with work that has changed. That, and I lost weight, and my ass magically shrunk.

As for the side of my face...my nose looks a little snubbed, but otherwise I look all right. I certainly don't have a nose like a electrical outlet or toaster, contrary to Sammie LeClair's opinion in the 9th grade.

Adri 07-18-2007 12:52 PM

I'm laughing so hard right now because I agree with everyone in this thread! Especially the OP... I have this mental image of my physical appearance, but occasionally I'll see a picture or catch a glance of myself in a mirror and think, "OH my GOD is that what I REALLY look like???"

I have a really nice nose from the front, but I have a weak chin so in profile, my nose looks HUGE. I, too, have considered a chin implant, but it doesn't bother me enough to actually cause me to have surgery. Yet. Who knows what I'll do when I get older and my jawline turns jowly. lol!!!

As for my body, I much prefer the profile shot; what looks fat straight on looks "curvy" from the side. Tee hee.

Bear Cub 07-18-2007 02:23 PM

I hate my side profile. My chest sticks out way too far for my liking. I have a decent amount of muscle there, but most of it is attributed to an enormous ribcage. I also have a very large upper back which seemingly sticks out for miles. Makes me look like one of the Koopas from the Mario Brothers movie. At least after the weight loss I actually have a chin now.

katyg 07-18-2007 02:44 PM

hahaha! i feel so reassured by this thread. went to H&M the other day and they had these all-angle mirrors...i . was .horrified. i look okay from the front but try left or right and i don't know how i ever slept with anybody or had two long term boyfriends. i have no chin and my nose looks witch-like!!! it's funny though, i must have a great personality and be great in bed :-)

Mr Scorcex 07-18-2007 06:02 PM

Oddly enough, I'm not too fond of my profile either. What worked for me though was putting up my hair into a mohawk. I couldn't even begin to explain the aesthetics of it, but maybe the extra six inches subdued my features. I guess the point is that if you really hate your profile you could try a mohawk and see how it turns out.

Charlatan 07-18-2007 06:35 PM

This effect is similar to hearing a recording of your own voice. You are so used to hearing/seeing yourself in a particular way that when you are given a different perspective it seems... foreign.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. We all have a enough to worry about in life without getting bent out of shape about things we can't change or control (and that just about everyone else that matters thinks is fine).

dfence 07-18-2007 09:01 PM

Wow I didn't expect so many responses, thanks guys

True, but people DO judge your overall appearance which includes every angle. I'm just unsure what people's first impression of me is.

What I really need (want) is someone's HONEST opinion of how good I look. As I write this it seems so superficial and vain of me to say all this, but I'm the type of person that if I can get my hands on facts (I know everyone's opinion is different, but one honest opinion is better than none), I think I'll be able to see where I'm at, then improve upon myself accordingly (i.e. hair, style, character, etc).

Like they say, "Accepting that you have a problem is the first step in dealing with it". You could probably substitute problem for another word, but you get the idea.
If someone confirmed what I thought about my self image was true or false, then at least I have the knowledge that something might need to be done.

For example, if someone says I have such and such a facial feature, I could look into ways of changing my hair to accent it.

Or if someone says I look child-like/young, I could start wearing a different style clothing that would suit me better.

Or if someone said I'm damn ugly (), I could change my personality to be that cocky funny guy or something that would suit me (also, please don't tell me that you can't change who you are because I believe we are always changing.)

At first this is what I thought. But why not get used to seeing yourself in the way that others see you so you can judge and change yourself for the better.

Anyways... what I'm getting at is that it would be nice to have an anonymous someone's opinion; it's pretty hard to go up and ask a friend about this stuff (very weird).

So... as long as we don't live in the same city (and will never see each other ever!), I was thinking it would be a good idea to swap pictures via PM or something to get some ideas flowing about each other. Also, I was thinking that a girl would better judge a guy and vice-versa, but I'm not sure about this. Opinions?

Add me to the list of people who hate their profile. Straight on I'm also critical about in some ways, but I'm more used to that angle of myself. Whenever I see my profile, I think I look fat, my nose is crooked and my face looks squished. It must be the mirrors hehe. I also have been to H & M...I agree it's not nice in the changing room!

Well I just wanted to add that for some people maybe my idea of judging each other is bad and could make things worse as well. But so far, I don't think so for me. I'd like to know.

Oh and yes, I'd like to repeat that I know this posting of mine is totally vain :paranoid:

Sultana 07-19-2007 05:54 AM

Someone else will always, ALWAYS have a different view point of your looks. And I'm sure that a points in your life, there have been folks who say you look fine. Yet you (and likely most of us) refuse to accept that. Instead we focus on the one time someone might have said something about a jawline, an overbite, etc.

I highly suggest you focus on pleasing only yourself with your assets (looks, personality, etc.). Anything else is going to be a huge waste of energy.

I actually don't have a problem with a bit of vanity. Superficiality however, is right out. :p

Two things:

1) You'll never get an "HONEST" factual opinion about your appearance. Even in the amazing anonymity of the internet, people will still soften their opinions of you so that they're not truly critical.

2) There is no "Fact" about how you look. I know people who would look at me and give a 5 out of 10, and I know people who think I'm an 8. There's a MASSIVE amount of processing that goes into facial recognition and attraction.

Some people like symmetry across the bridge of the nose. Some people like asymmetry. Some people like Nordic eyes / cheekbones. Some don't. Some like pronounced chins, some don't. Some like wide-eyed faces with eyes spread far from each other. Some people like eyes very close together.

There's no universal "fact" about how you appear to others, or how attractive you'll be. I think I'm a goofy motherfucker, but my girlfriend seems to like it.

You're better off trying to find groups of people more likely to be interested in your face/body/personality type then changing your face/body/personality type to aim at a different group.

This is an obvious case for changing the audience, not the actor,

vanblah 07-19-2007 09:34 AM

I was just looking at myself sideways last night. We moved to an apartment (sold the house) and the mirrors are HUGE. Probably to make the apartment seem bigger ... anyway.

I noticed last night that I have the beginnings of old-man ass. When the hell did that happen? I used to have a fairly nice butt ... or so my wife thought. Sort of a bubble butt ...

Now it just sort of starts at the bottom of my back and it's starting to sag a little.

Getting old sucks ... well, just the physical side of getting old.

I did the mohawk thing for a while.

Turns out I couldn't get a job with it.

In the back of my mind I knew that I would end of having to not worry about it and just live life... I just wasn't sure.

Your post is true although I think there are people out there who are pretty much universally attractive :paranoid:

I wonder if those people know they're attractive by looking at themselves or just assume from all the positive feedback they get..

So... change the audience? But how do you know what audience to change it to?

HA! I had one of those moments just this morning. In my bathroom, facing the mirror, I thought I was looking pretty sharp. Caught a glimpse of me in the bathroom at work later from an odd angle and "Jaysus, who the hell is that guy!?!"

....then I turned back facing the mirror and the sharp guy was back, so I side stepped out the door.

Yeah, same here. I just did it for the last month I was at school, and come time for the summer job search it was ruthlessly hacked off. Still sad to see it go, but I guess that' neither here nor there.

Zeraph 07-20-2007 01:56 PM

It's true what earlier posts said, attractiveness is too broad a spectrum for there to be facts about individuals. I used to be a bit like you in the sense I was a fact person and wanted to know from curiosity what my face was. I tried to think of ways to document my face by inevitably had to give up.

For instance, women can find certain men attractive just based on their estrous period from month to month. Certain times they're likely to be more attracted to finer/thiner/more feminine facial features vs thicker/more masculine features.

Another major problem in figuring out what you are for a "fact" are the photographs used to document it, lighting, photogenic(itivy?), angle, etc.

And of course people rarely tell the full absolute truth. Some may be harsher or kinder.

Even people who are considered attractive by so many still vary wildly between each person. Maybe there average score is a 9 but their range could be from 4-10 easily.

Popularity can also enter into it, just how much a person likes you, etc.

Short of being in a psychology attractiveness study (there are such things, I studied one for a paper) where thousands of people rate your picture you'll never be able to reliably find out. And even then theres the photography variable.

Best to just "find your appropriate audience" so to speak, like someone said earlier and be happy.

This post has made me curious what type of features I have though, like what's the Icelandic cheeks a previous poster mentioned?

dfence 07-20-2007 05:20 PM

Very interesting guys, also very helpful info

I'm just going to keep on being positive about myself and others and I think everything should be a-ok

One opinion question though... does anyone think it's weird at all for people to only post pictures of themselves online (ie. facebook, myspace) that are straight on pictures and that are at the best lighting etc.. to make the person look best? Wondering...

Bear Cub 07-20-2007 07:45 PM

Thats more human instinct than it is weird. People want to look their best, especially when said photos are available to millions of public onlookers.

TheShadow 07-21-2007 12:03 AM

Hmm.. I look moreso like a total dork from my side profile. It really bugs me!

hmm that makes sense...

also, when I see photos of people I see in real life, they look the same in their pictures.. do pictures ever lie though? or do you more or less look exactly like your pictures in real life?

match000 07-22-2007 10:17 AM

everyone knows their own best "angle". why do you think some ppl take every single picture with their head tilted in the same angle, no matter how they are standing.

lol sometimes i see a girl who looks exactly the same in every pic, her head has been maneuvered into the same angle everytime lol

World's King 07-22-2007 10:33 AM

I just have a huge nose. Other then that... I'm okay.

That's why I only allow photos of me taken if I'm lying down:thumbsup:

Funny you should mention this; the NY Daily News had a pictorial featuring several celebrities and their photos-Lindsay Lohan always pouts with her head slightly turned; Paris Hilton always looks out with her head tilted to the right to mask an uneven eye; Eva Longoria always blows kisses. And, of course, the infamous Barbra Streisand's 'never photograph me from the right EVAH!' to the point of insisting talkshow setups be changed to accommodate that request.

surferlove007 07-22-2007 03:25 PM

Well this might sound kind of weird...I like my profile from the left side, but not the right. You know how the camera looks at you from one side and you angle your head so its kind of turned...well I don't mind it that way. The side were my bangs dont fall is fine, but where my bangs fall I don't like.
Is that weird...anyone else do that.
I call it my "good" side.
Front on I don't really mind it.
I just don't like to take pictures where my face is angled toward my bangs...so you all probably noticed I angle my head a certain way almost every time! Lol.

I used to have a side preference. I liked the left side of my face better than the right for a long time because I had an oddly shaped mark on my right side due to an unfortunate accident involving wild parsnip sap (DO NOT, under any circumstances, attempt to use wild parsnip sap as face paint). Eventually, though, it faded.

Perhaps I still have a side preference, as the left side of the nose has my stork bite mark...so now that the right side is no longer disfigured, perhaps the left side is the better choice.

medlar 07-23-2007 02:38 PM

My profile picture shows me in er..profile. I was actually in a pissed off mood and avoiding looking at the camera. I haven't really made a point of looking at myself from the side and seeing it now I'm not too impressed actually. Have to look into some Clearsil or something it appears, maybe a haircut. I look like a slob.

dfence 07-23-2007 09:52 PM

I'm pretty sure I have a long head.

I read this on Yahoo Answers:

"Ok you should cut it so that it is a little bit longer but not like a girl. If you keep the length right below your chin it tends to make your head appear shorter, but if you have a long neck that is not a good idea. Also don't have your hair to short in the crown or spiky because it makes your head appear even longer."

So I guess a haircut can help with your features
