If you were a dog owner, you'd understand!

I got a chuckle thinking about the things I thought I'd never do before I got dogs.

--I never in a million years thought I'd pick up poop with nothing but a small baggie on my hand. In fact, the first time I did that, I almost barfed.

--TMI, but I also never thought I'd have to hand-cut/pick out dingleberries on my curly-coated beasts. YUCK.

--I never thought I'd sleep with an animal. Much less two animals, stretching out full-length, taking up most of the bed, and farting up a storm.

--Speaking of farts. I never thought I'd say "Aw, little gassy boy!" in an affectionate voice when the animal lets go with a truly hideous, rotten-bologna-smelling one...the kind you have to light a Glade candle for.

--I never thought I'd let an animal lick me on the mouth.

--I never thought I'd brush my hair (thoughtlessly, but still--I wasn't too concerned) with a brush I'd used on the dogs.

--I never thought I'd be eating a sandwich, see my dog take a bite of it out of the corner of my eye while I'm in the kitchen getting a soda...then shrug and eat the sandwich anyway.

Anyone else want to chime in?

never thought i would watch my dog barf and clean it up b4 the dog could do it for me....... never thught i would help my dog poo by using a tissue to remove a 'dangly' from its bum that was hanging by a hair(it was my hair after all) by the waylindalove, i think you lead a very normal life....lol

longbough 10-24-2006 05:30 AM

I've done all the above except I wouldn't eat a sandwich my dog chomped - only because I don't want to be gagging on fur (he sheds).

--I never thought I'd worry more about my dog's oral hygeine than even my own

--I never thought I'd sniff my dog's paws for the smell of corn chips

--I never thought I'd go to a store and ask for something made from a bull's penis

--I never thought I'd sing to an animal

--I never thought I'd look forward to going for unplanned walks in the neighborhood at 5am

I'm a dog owner and I don't let the dogs sleep in the bed, I don't let them kiss me, I don't feed them what I'm eating, I don't brush my hair with the same brush they use, but I do scoop their poop out of the yard and have had to pick a dingle-berry or two.

:)

I never thought I'd have a conversation with an animal as if she understood what I was saying.
I never thought I'd be so adept at giving doggy haircuts.
I never thought I could mourn the passing of a pet more than any person.

StanT 10-24-2006 07:38 AM

I never thought I'd get up at 5am to shovel snow so the dog could go outside.

I never thought I'd read the nutritional details on a bag of dog food more carefully than my own food.

I never thought I'd spend 5x as much on a haircut for my dog than my own.

I never thought I'd intentionally keep a smelly T-shirt laying around for the dog to curl up with.

I hate to point out the obvious but Picabo has way more than 5x the amount of hair that you do... :D She probably sheds more hair in day that your entire family has on their heads:D

I agree with everything in this thread but this one just resonates even more.

Oh, and I never thought I'd pay $250 for a vet bill, much less just to clean their teeth every other year!!

And to add to it all, I never thought I'd love "just a dog" as much as I do and now I have a second oen. And now every time I come home I have to remember which one I picked up first the last time I came home just to keep things even because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings...

I suspect my dog actually understands me but chooses to selectively play "dumb."

Big AMEN to that ...

zed wolf 10-26-2006 03:54 AM

Dogs have had a big influence in my adult life. I never had any growing up or even had friends that did but now, I cant imagine life without one. Specifically Siberian Huskies. Truly magnificent creatures. I believe they are a positive influence on me. After all When you own one and look into there eyes you know that they know. what do they know? well, they know. Another thread on this board is a discussion of chivalry and such but for me I don't live by chivalry or do the right thing or common courtesy. The way I live my life is 'I want to be the man my dog thinks I am' something about the light in there eyes when they look at you..........If you were a dog owner, you'd understand. Yes I sleep with my dog, I even get cranky with her because she dosent like to cuddle. And the best way to bath a large furry beast? Get naked and bring them in the shower with you. Its pointless to try and stay dry so if you cant beat them join them. I used to use my dogs shampoo for myself more then I used my own. My current Husky Natasha goes every where with me even to work. whenever I get a new job I always make a condition of my employment that my dog must be allowed to come to work with me.
I believe having a dog is a big responsibility, you would never leave your 6 yr old child locked up in a cage in your back yard while you went to work or the movies would you?

Elphaba 10-26-2006 03:07 PM

I have bought more toys for my new puppy than I have for my granddaughter. (No hissing, grandpa has her well supplied :) )

Lady Sage 10-29-2006 05:36 AM

I can take people passing... but when one of my babies dies..... it feels like someone is ripping out my black heart and lighting it on fire right in front of me. It feels like losing a child. :(

longbough 10-29-2006 11:10 AM

Each pet I've ever seen die still makes me cry when I think about it...

I'm soooo envious! Mine are small toy poodles but someone is around to let them out at least every 4-5 hours. Otherwise, they like to sleep when we're not home. And if we can't do that, they go to doffie day care and play with friends their own size.

zed wolf 10-30-2006 02:16 AM

Day care could be nice. I have room mates here that could watch after my girl while I am not here but...Id rather not do that unless I have to that way I dont have to listen to them say your dog did >insert anything here< while you were gone... they will find anything to complain about. I have no idea why though. they have a dog of there own and um, 6 cats? Oh well.

Another thing I wanted to share with everyone, You know you own a husky when its fall and you rake your dog more then your lawn.
I think I finaly have most of her under furr out untill spring.

fightnight 10-31-2006 07:54 AM

I never thought I'd take a dog on a walk... watch it start to take a dump... realize a full minute later that the business is still hainging from his rear... use the plastic bag on my hand and start to pull, and low and behold it stretches, so I keep pulling (not quite sure what it is yet) until I finally get it out to realize it's one of my girlfriend's Stockings, he's only a 17 pound cairn terrier too, amazing he gets things like that down and they move through without trouble!

flat5 10-31-2006 09:55 AM

I think I learned more than I wanted to know.

Ever think of taking that magic act on the road?

roofdier 10-31-2006 09:08 PM

Gah! How odd...yet another post that I KNOW I have read before. I mean, the exact same wording. How weird.

Anyway... I never thought I would be so apathetic about my dogs licking my daughter's face, hands and bum.

fightnight 11-01-2006 10:14 AM

It really is amazing what can move through and come out the other side intact.

Grasshopper Green 11-01-2006 01:36 PM

I never thought I could like a dog until I owned a dog.

I never thought I would be so thrilled when I KNEW Thelma Lou understood the words "Go Walking", "Outside", "Mailbox", "Beary" (her bear toy), "Bone" and when she learned to distinguish by sight the automobiles of my sister, nieces, and two brothers, all from her back-of-the-sofa-at-the-living-room-side-window perch.

She's a genious, I think.
