The TFP Odometer!
Alright folks, the Push-Up Challenge has motivated me to start the TFP Odometer.
The rules are simple, log your miles (or % of miles) ran in this thread. If you're one of those crazy people that uses the metric system (Crazy! :p) feel free to log kilometers and we'll do a conversion either way. Hopefully this will motivate people to get out and pound the pavement. Remember - there's no substitute for running! I'll start it off: 0+3 = 3 miles |
Just as a note:
1 mile = 1.6km So if you do run X number of kilometres, just divide the number by 1.6. |
I know Siege! I was just kidding about those crazy metric system people.
Start running!! ;) |
1 mile this morning.
Total: 1 mile (1.609344 km) for me Thread total: 4 miles, 6.437376 km |
Can we walk? My big butt doesnt run. Im too fat and it kills my joints:( I do like to walk though :)
|
If you accept walking, I walk 1 km to work every day. I'm still trying to figure out where I can fit running and/or strength training into my new schedule, though.

Since we're counting walking - I got 2 miles in yesterday!
Total - 6 miles! |
Four miles for me this morning, so we're up to 10!
|
anyone know why when i run i get terrible pain in my shin, it feels like the bone is coming through the skin.
i think its called shin splints. but how do i get rid of it? btw what do you think is a healthy or good time to run 1.5 miles? 30 year old male |
Yeah, most likely is shin splints, but it might be something worse. Do you run regularly? Does the pain start immediately when you start running, or kick in when you're well into the run? If you rest a week between runs, do you still have the pain?
There are many stretches and exercises you can do to help shin splints, but they are kinda hard to explain in text. Search for them on Google and you should find tons of info about it. Unfortunately if the pain happens every time you run no matter how long you rest between runs, you may have permanent shin splints that never go away. That is bad, and if you keep running through the pain you could really damage your legs. Using a non-impact exercise such as an elliptical machine is probably your best bet if your shin splints never get better. |
Okay.. well, I didn't work yesterday, but I got called in today, so 1 km there plus 1 km back.
2 km = 1.25 mi Total 11.25 |
+2 miles
= 13.25 |
BNL,
Carno is pretty dead on about his shin spints advice. The concern is not so much the splints but that they could lead to something much more severe, like a stress fracture. If it gives you serious pain to run, even after stretching/icing, don't do it. If it continues to persist, see a doctor. My brother had splints that became a stress fracture and he couldn't do crap for weeks while he healed, so be careful. As for your concern for a 1.5 mile run, I would say 12 minutes is a respectable pace. That is an 8-min mile pace, which is a "running" pace. I would say a 10min 1.5 miles indicates a pretty high level of cardiovascular ability. I've read on Runner's World that 10min/mile pace is the cut-off between a "run" and a "jog." So, if you're running 1.5 miles in 15min, you are at a jogging pace. But hell, that's good! Also, +3 miles = 16.25 |
Quote:
Running? Hahaha, I can't remember the last time I was on a treadmill for more than 10 min. |
16.2427424 miles so far, plus my 1.5 miles this morning...
Total = 17.7428424 (23.726305 km) |
+4.5 = 22.2427
= 22.25 miles! |
.75 miles to work
.75 miles from work (up hill - that's gotta count for more :) 1.5 miles total (not counting the countless trips to the bathroom, and coffee area) 23.75 miles |
+2 miles for me!
25.75 miles |
Ran two miles yesterday. So 2 for me.
|
I walked some this afternoon about 2 miles.. :O)
|
+6
= 35.75 miles |
+2
= 37.75 |
+2 more so I am up to 4.
|
Ok - I think I missed the point of this thread. Maybe we are up to
39.75 with my last two. I think someone else already added in my previous two. |
+6
= 45.75 |

Shin splints usually go away for me if I take it easy at first, take walking breaks every 5 minutes for 1 minute or so, etc. I think that it has to do with increased circulation to the area. And not to be a total thread jack, I don't have any mileage to contribute today, but I will measure off some distances around my new neighborhood and check back in over the weekend. |
Ooooo - I love this! I did this kind of logging on the TR Forum last year and it felt great to see the miles/kms adding up!!
I wonder if, as a group we can walk 'around the world', approxmiately 24,000 miles. WillTravel, I see you started logging the group total. Can you keep us posted? I don't have a car, so I walk everywhere. Unfair advantage, I know. Hehehe. Today, Day 1: March 24, by 10am: 7km = 4.17 miles (I like the kms better. Looks like a lot more. :D ) |
Um, you can just add the numbers together and give the new total at the bottom of your post.
45.75 + 4.17 = 49.92 |
Unlike Brilliant idiot, I have too many cars. Most run, hehe. So I have no unfair advantage. I've been needing to start walking again- so count me in. I've read walking burns more fat calories than running. And being lazy.................walking is a lot easier.

Brais, http://www.usatf.org/routes/ This is a sweet program. It uses google earth to map out running routes. My friend showed this to me, it totally rocks. You can precisely measure any distances. Oh, also! +3 52.92! |
Additional 2.5 miles for Wednesday and today (I was off sick yesterday).
52.92 + 2.5 = 55.42 |
Quote:
I'm at 2.5 more km today which is another 1.5 miles, so I'm at 5.67 miles for Day 1. |
I'm in for this.
Had laser eye surgery on the 23rd, so no exercise for a week, but between the 20th and 22nd I logged 4 miles. New grand total is 59.42 |
Was advised by an arthopod years ago to avoid running to save my knees. But I walk... BOY do I walk! Wore a pedometer at work several years ago and averaged @ 6 miles a day (2 story auto parts store), with much lifting and carrying and stair climbing. Since becoming manager, I'm probably down to fewer than 4 miles per 9 hour day, five or six times a week. I understand that this is not all intense, heart-racing exercize, but we could really ramp up this odometer in a hurry by logging them all.
Without the pedometer, though, it's just a guess. |
Add 1.2 miles for Day 2 for a total of 6.87 miles
OR 11.5 km!!! |
Ugh.
+8 for yesterday, +6.2 for today. Total for me = 38.7 miles. Thread total = 74.82 miles |
Duh - I
figured it out. I need to add my total in with the 74.82, for a thread total of 81.69 |
Oops, I didn't mean to sound like I was groaning at you BI, I was groaning because I had to do so much shit this weekend with the Army ROTC unit. Hence my 14 miles in 24 hours :|
But anyway, yeah that's what I meant before, add your total in with the thread total. I already added yours in though, so the thread total is 74.82  |
+2.5
Total 84.19 It's a shame I can't effectively log the amount of walking I do at work. I'm on my feet every day for eight hours, that probably adds a nice extra bit to my total. |
Ran another two today. That is +2
86.19 |
I've decided tonight that I'm going to shoehorn my training into my schedule, because otherwise it's just not going to happen. To that end, there's another +2 today.
88.19 |
+3
91.19! |
+6
The thread total is off though, should be 90.32 miles now. |
Thanks Carno!

Haven't posted for a bit, and now that I'm back I'm amazed at how quickly the thread total is adding up! Way to go!
I've been logging my walks on my computer, and to add them in here - since I last posted I've clocked 25 km or 14.9 miles. (Had to buy new sneakers! :D ) Making my personal total 21.75 miles or 30.67 km. Making the thread totalllllll ...... (drum roll please......) 195.8 miles. Let's see who brings us over 200! |
3/31 - 1.5 miles round trip to work
4/1 1.0 miles round trip to grocery store 4/3 1.5 miles round trip to work 4.0 miles total 199.8 miles |
+6
= 205.8 miles total |
+3
Miserably hot. 208.8 |
Ok, I ran 1 mile today for the hell of it.
+1 *Pulls out calculator* 209.8 |
+6
= 215.8 miles |
+4 yesterday
= 219.8 miles. |
+3
222.8! |
2 more for me!
total: 224.8 |
+2 miles (against with an APFT)
So, uhh: 226.8m |
Oh, and if walking counts, can I assume mountain hiking counts as well? If so, chalk up another 1.5m for the Squaw Peak Summit Trail (that thing kicks my ass!)
|
I'll just start from the first of the week....2 miles each Mon., Tues., and yesterday....
+6 = 234.3 |
Since last Friday, 8 miles total on the treadmil (four 2 mile sessions of HIIT with 1 minute jog, 1 minute sprint... repeated for 15 mins)
Grand total is: 242.3 |
Add on another 30.75K for me, (or 18.3 miles) for a personal total of 61.42 km or.... 36.6 miles. (Although, I must say, going up hills should count for extra!)
Thread total... (drum rollllllllll) 278.9 miles |
+6 for Friday, +10 for Saturday and +6 for this morning.
Total = 300.9 |
+5!
305.9 |
i think im gonna chime in here .. its gonna keep me motivated
ran 1.5 this morning Total = 307.4 |
I get shin pain too... It's a right bastard of a thing. Takes ages to go away - and it can get so bad (if you try to push through despite the pain) that walking is a problem
Only way around it that I've found is to build up distance really really slow. I think I got around it once - I snuck into the running habit by walking a few house blocks, running one, walking a few, running one etc. Then I slowly did more. I also did strength and stretching work for my ankles at the time, and swimming. But 'cos of shin pain, I'm not that keen on running.... for myself. |
+4
= 311.4 |
2 for yesterday, 2 for today...
total: 315.4 |
+2 for yesterday
Total = 317.4 |
Since April 7 I've walked 18.34 km more or 10.94 more miles, for personal totals of 79.8 km or 47.5 miles. (I would like to count biking, but I've gotta stop somewhere! ;) )
Thread total now at: 328.3 miles! |
+3
331.3! |
+ 6 walking from M, T, W
+ 2 running from today 331.3 + 8 = 339.3 |
I have to be more regular about this. Two weeks x 20 km / week = 40 km = 25 miles.
339.3 + 25 = 364.3 |
Ran two more.
366.3 |
Last week: Sunday 2.13 + Tuesday 2 + Thursday 2.13 = 6.26
= 372.56 |
Finally I am able to run again.. +4 for today.
376.56 |
+2 for this morning
378.56 |
+2
=380.56 |
+2.15 for yesterday
= 382.71 |
+2.13 for yesterday (Wednesday)
=384.84 |
Oops, forgot to log my miles the other day. +4
388.84 |
I ran the Flora London Marathon yesterday in 4 hrs and 10 minutes = 26.2 miles
388.84 + 26.2 _______ =415.04 |
^^Makes my 2.17 seem extremely small... :(
+2.17 = 417.21 |
Congratulations Vector.
I've never ran a marathon. My longest run was only 7 miles. Did you do the walk/run interval or run the whole 26.2...... 2 + 417.21 =419.21 |
