Canker Sores!
Youch! What a pain these are!
I have one in my mouth right now and it is quite a pain in the arse, ESPECIALLY when I brush my teeth. I have a numbing medicine, but I hate those cause if you swallow a little bit or get some on your tongue it feels horrible. Anyone have any home remedies or suggestions for my problem? I get these about once every two months :| |
Ouch - I just got off of a really bad canker sore that's unfortunately scarred the inside of my lip.
What I've found that works? I rinse my mouth with listerine for thirty seconds, then rinse it again with a half and half mixture of Maalox and Robitussin, and then finally I rub anbesol onto my canker sore to make the pain go away. I did this probably 3 times a day, maybe 4 depending on when I was home, when I ate, etc. I'd probably suggest doing it right after eating. I had the sore for about two weeks and it didn't change, and then as soon as I started doing the Maalox/Robitussin mix it went away within three days. The first day there was no change, but by the second evening it was a really big change. |
excuse my ignorance but could someone tell me what a 'canker'sore is? I have never heard of one and am very curious.

I don't know of any fast cures, but I have learned of one way to help block some of the pain without using the numbing gels that often cause problems for the rest of your mouth. If you cover the sore with a thin layer of vaseline, it acts as a kind of seal to keep out saliva and food and helps cut back on the pain while not affecting the rest of your mouth in any way. It eventually wears off of course, but it's better than nothing! :)
|
Hmm, never tried vaseline....
I always just sprinkle salt on them, but then, I'm kind of a masochist and I hate the taste of medicine in my mouth. After it stops burning like hell, I rinse my mouth out with water. I do it after every meal. If the canker sore is too big or in a place where I bite it a lot, then I just break down and smear a little orajel on it after my salt ritual. |

Zilactin. http://a1468.g.akamai.net/f/1468/580...g/149204/200.j http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...UY-PLST-0-SRCH Basically, Zilactin dries out the canker sore while also putting a protective film over the sore. I use it before meals when I have a sore. The only caution: you have to be very careful not to tug too much on the protective film. It WILL pull on your mouth skin considerably. I also rinse with Peroxyl (a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash by Colgate) twice a day when I have a sore, and dab straight hydrogen peroxide on the sore at least once a day. Make sure to rinse your mouth well after using the hydrogen peroxide. With this regimen, I can usually get rid of a sore in less than 2 days. Additionally, if the pain is too much, I get out my tube of Zilactin-B, which is basically Zilactin with benzocaine. Because of the protective film, it doesn't let the benzocaine leech into the rest of your mouth. Wonderful stuff. |

I forget what I do personally, but i'll report back next time I get one :) |

But of course you probably have them down in AussieLand, too. What do you call them? |
I get canker sores when I drink a lot of orange juice.
I've always just let them be. Never thought you could do anything for them. |
i am not really sure, unless they are mouth ulcers, are they whiteish /reddish and really hurt if you eat and drink acidic stuff. I just thought you got them from biting your inner cheek when asleep. (As I said before, please excuse my total ignorance on this subject)

I get these all the time, usually in a series (once I get one, then as soon as it fades away I will get another in a different area of the mouth). They are annoying as HELL, though my treatment has always been to leave 'em be... takes 5-7 days for them to go away, occasionally longer. (I tried the benzocaine stuff a few times, never liked it.)
Now, as for the SALT remedy... WTF? Are you guys insane? The very idea of pouring salt on those buggers makes my eyes roll... *shudder*. But if it really does work, well hey... maybe I should try it. I really hate canker sores, especially when I want to give a good blow job but just can't because of the pain. Seriously though, it has happened! Kissing has been painful too, with some of my recent ones... :( So a little salting may be in order, if you all SWEAR that it is worth it!! |

I don't understand why anyone would willingly rub salt into a wound--in my case, hydrogen peroxide/Zilactin has always cleared up even my most stubborn sores in less than a couple days with MUCH less pain. |

Am a completely misinformed? |

Well folks, I have turned Lemons into Lemonade and started a small "experiment" with my canker sore, to find the right home remedy for it!
For the first day, I have tried Listerine. Seems odd I know, but I did a little research on the canker sore and (in theory) Listerine should definitely help get rid of it faster. I used Listerine 3 times (once after each meal). Although it stung, after the Listerine, my mouth felt great and the canker sore did not hurt one bit! Tomorrow I will be trying the salt water remedy. Then, finally, just pure salt. Hopefully my mouth will forgive me for the pain I am inflicting, but it will benefit us all in the end. |

I got this info from an NIH page, but for some reason my browser isn't letting me cut and paste info or even the URL. :-\ |
Perhaps this is the link? http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/000998.htm

oh yeah i feel eveyone on this matter .. ive tired salt listerine and mine usually last up to two weeks the longest.. oh they are annoying. i jsut take the pain like a man i guess but ima try that zilactin and peroxide trick that sounds like a godsend... anyway dont do the salt i think the benefits are far from good , listerine doesnt burn as bad as salt, but it numbs it better i think..

I swear, try using the Maalox/Robitussin mix.

Didn't read the replies...
Do yourself a favor and get a perscription for Triamcinolone Acetonide if you get them often. Three of four people in my family get them quite badly and this new stuff is the only thing that has ever really worked wonders. |
