The evil power of the Snooze!
Any suggestions on how to break the evil grip the snooze button seems to have on me? It's so evil it's E-Vil like the fru-its of the de-vil....E-vil....(thanks Mike Meyers) I sleep fine, don't get tired during the day (unless I am reading something with a lot of acronyms), and I go to bed around the same time at night. I just can't get myself to get up in the morning. Any advice? Thanks.

I also have the same problem with the snooze. I need to hit it at least five times before waking up for good. :p I've found the best solution is to set your alarm for an hour before you actually need to get up. So you have that hour to slowly wake yourself up and hit the snnoze as often as you need.
|
The best solution is to put your alarm on the other side of your room, or just far enough away so you have to get out of bed just to turn it off.

I just set the alarm on my cell phone and it does not give me the option for snooze. If it did, I might be tempted to lay in bed for awhile longer, but since I do not have that option I get up before I fall back asleep.
|
Second the alarm across the room. Make it loud, obnoxious, and on talk radio first thing in the morning. You'll WANT to get up and turn that thing off.

The ideas I had (no snooze button on alarm, putting it across the room) have been said... so I'll just go ahead and wander out of the thread. :)

Multiple alarms set to go off at 5 minute intervals. My friend does that, and still manages to be late.
She literally has to walk around to turn off the alarms every 5 minutes. |

In addition, I set 5 alarms on my phone..but I guess that just perpetuates sleeping in cause you know you'll get another alarm in 15 minutes LOL. |

Ono's gotit right-- set your alarm earlier... another method is to set the clock a certain number of minutes ahead- then when you wake up- thse 2 seconds it takes to do themath to figure out what time it really is-- helps to wake you up... anothermethod I'm hoping to try soon-- have some gorgeous babe/hunk (or spec if he rents out) wake you up in themorning with your method of choice  |

I second using a different time for the alarmclock - or as I do: Wake up, turn it off quick and head for the shower trying not to wake the baby :) |

Another method is to have the coffee maker/grinder set on the timer - I can sometimes hear the grinding - though lately I'm so congested i can't smell the coffee- though I usually can - that's often enough to float my behind into the kitchen.. |

Has anyone discussed this little tiny thing in your mind called self-discipline?
First: Setting your clock ahead does not work. Your conscious will rationally tell your lazy ass that the real time is X-minutes early, and thus allowing yourself to keep snoozing. Second: Setting multiple alarms gives your lazy ass permission to miss the first (and subsequent) alarms. Third: If you are still tired in the morning, GO TO BED EARLY. Who says you have to go to bed at a certain time? Try this experiment for one day, just ONE: Go to bed 90 minutes early tonight. When you wake up tomorrow, remember that feeling. How was it? Good? Then you now realize that you have been consistently tired, possibly your whole adult life. Why an alarm clock? The use of said device tells me that you have a schedule to keep in the morning... there is a possibility that you may be late. Unless you have a schedule at night (very rare, and dangerous to have your schedule stack around your sleep time) then you are able to quickly change this in your favour. You could always do what I do: join the army and have the pleasant feeling of a heart attack every morning when reveille sounds. |
MP3/CD alarm clock set on the other end of the room blasting music. It's the only thing that works for me.
|
I put my alarm clock on the other side of the room.
But all you really need is willpower. You can make yourself get up after the alarm goes off the first time. |

   This was pretty much exactly what I was going to say You have to take responsibility for the decision to wake up, and to actually get up when that alarm clock goes off. It's not the alarm's fault you hit the snooze button. Find some motivation to get up, and just do it. I pretend ninjas will take me out if I don't get up- whatever works. Getting more sleep the night before is fantastic too. Your body is really good at telling you if it needs more sleep. Falling asleep through multiple alarms is a pretty good indication you're not getting enough. If you feel able to wake up consistently, switch your alarm to a powertimer attached to a room light. It's a much less jarring way to wake up. |
My wife is bad for this... she sets the alarm (which is on the other side of the room) and then will snooze it a few times before finally getting up. Did I mention she likes to get up early?
Me? The alarm (when I use an alarm) goes off and I get out of bed. I rarely use the snooze. |

make sure the sun can come in your room and that will wake you up!

but i have been getting used to it... i have the central vacuum in my room and that doesnt wake me up when someone uses it anymore... so even my parents can't wake me up! hahaha! |
Can't figure out how cynthetiq did the quote-the-quote-the-quote thing...

I never used the snooze until I married. My hubby does the "set it early and hit it a few times" method (it takes him forever to wake up). If it was up to me, I'd probably go back to not using it. I don't feel that I get as much sleep waking up every 5 minutes... |
I saw somewhere a clock that once you hit the snooze, it actually moved itself to another location in the room so you had to find it next time it went off!
That would work once for me- Next time I would have a hammer so that bastard wouldn't move again. ;) |

yup, that's what i had to do. Also... gettting an alarm clock Without a snooze and an alarm clock that gets louder and louder until you turn it off works wonders :D sweetpea |

I guess tearing the room apart looking for the damn thing would wake you up... |
Get a cat. Or two. Feed it a small meal at 9 pm, no later. Starting around 5 am, the cat will begin trying to wake you -- in small ways at first, then by methods more and more dire until you actually get out of bed and feed it. I think I've slept past 7 am maybe twice in the last couple of years. And both times I woke up with an 18-pound Tonkinese standing on my chest and screaming at me.
Cats are more bother than an alarm clock, but they're extremely reliable and not affected by power failures. And if a hungry cat has a snooze button, I've never been able to locate it. |
Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I'll just try some things and see what works. Funny that no one mentioned will power...hmmm...oh well. We'll see what happens.
|
I've seen some alarms that when they go off 4 puzzle pieces shoot out of the top and the only way to get it to stop is to put the puzzle together. :p
|
It helps if you give yourself a solid reason to get out of bed in the morning. I find that if I have an exam for example, and I think about the exam before bed, when I awaken all bleary-eyed, suddenly "EXAM!" pops into my head, and I get a nice electrochemical whoosh from my sympathetic nervous system. Better than caffiene, no lie.

Alarm clock with no snooze. Also, a bit of self-discipline goes a long way, as does getting my ass in bed a few HOURS earlier than usual. |
After a couple of days of trying, having some natural light come in in the morning helps, but....Saturday was not good. I had no reason to get up and didn't. Oh well, it was the weekend. As long as I get up in time to go to the movies tomorrow, I am all set.
As for the puzzle alarm clock...my roommate would hate that, and then I would break it...I know I would. |
cure the snooze.... put your clock on the far side of your room by your bath robe or if you work out in the mornings, by your gym bag. You have to get up to turn off the alarm or even hit the snooze button and when you get there, you see your 1st goal of the morning... time to get up.
|
I go with the slow wake up deally. I set the clock for at least 40 min. before i need to get up and gradually get on with my day. getting up quickly puts me in a pissy mood all day long, unless there is a fire call and then i am out of bed like a shot.
|
Some lucky people can't fall asleep after they get up. I could get up have a snack, watch some TV, and go right back to sleep. I think I just need to suck it up for a few weeks and get back on a better schedule. We'll see.

WIN THE LOTTERY! ...first thing I'd do is throw my alarm clock
through the window. :D I wish I could have inherited my grandfather's body-clock... he never used an alarm clock EVER. He always woke up every morning just when he wanted to. I've never had any success with alarm clocks...I always get used to the sound after a while, and end up having no recollection of them having gone off (and I've often used two at a time.) So yeah... win the lottery... |
Yeah, I've become very good friends with my snooze button. It's not good. Not causing me to be late or anything, but still...I like to take time in the morning, NOT rush. Forty minutes of snoozing prevents that!
|
I'm so dead in the morning I don't even wake up when I hit snooze. By the time I finally wake up, I always swear my alarm clock is totally broken. (Did I mention I work graveyard shift and go to bed at 11am?)
So since my alarm clock wouldn't get me up by dinnertime, I decided the "Grab someone in the house to pound on your door for awhile" method. Still didn't get me up, even when they came down 4 times, each time angrier and angrier. So since THAT didn't work, I decided that it would be best for my brother to pound his acoustic drums that happen to be right outside of my door. So they woke me up.. sure.. but then I fell right back to sleep and the drums did nothing. What I need is literally someone to drag me from bed. I know I don't get enough sleep, and that this is all my fault  |
Try putting the alarm in the hallway outside your room, then you'll have to get up. I just set my alarm 40 odd minutes early so I can push snooze at least 5 times before properly waking up.

I'm not a morning person. Just ask my mom, roomates....streak ;)
I set my alarm ahead randomly, and I change it ever so often. Try subtracting 17 minutes or 23 minutes first thing in the morning. Secondly I give myself about 45 minutes to wake up before I get out of bed. I also set a battery powered alarm so if the power goes out I don't need to worry about an alarm. Also, my alarm clock is on the most annoying and loudest radio station ever. I've never missed a 9:00 or 9:30 class so far this semester. *Suprisingly enough I've slept through a 1:30p.m. and 5:30 p.m. class* |
I just have the most annoying alarm clock sound so that if I do not want to get up, the annoying sound makes me get up. Hopefully that made a little bit of sense.
|
As counter intuitive as it sounds, I set the volume of the alarm clock down low, so it takes me a few minutes to actually hear it. It's not jolting me awake in the morning. Also having the shades open so the sun comes in helps too. However, I still hit the snooze a couple of times. Just need to try a little harder....
|
I wake up at 6AM without fail every morning. But sometimes, like SirLance said, getting out of bed and waking up is not the same thing.
|
I really hate getting up in the morning though I like being awake once I'm up. What I found the best solution was (in college) was setting my alarm clock for 1 hour before I'm supposed to wake up, and then at the actual time as well. So set it for 5 AM and 6 AM for example. Once you wake up at 5 AM, the second time is a breeze and you actually have the willpower to get up. For some reason your mind gets a boost of willpower if you're able to fall back asleep for even an hour after the first alarm goes off.
|
I had a 9am blood test this morning. I set my alarm for 7:20. I have to get up out of bed to turn it off (hit snooze). I did that 6 times, until it gave up going off at 8:10. I set my cell phone as a last ditch alarm for 8:40 and it worked. But I'm not sure why my first alarm clock stopped.
I hate getting up in the morning. |
My mother got me the greatest clock ever for Christmas last year. Instead of hitting snooze, all I have to do is wave at it. But to help solve waking problems, try the following:
Option 1: Set two alarms an hour apart. Turn a bedside light on when the first goes off and go back to sleep. Your body will be waking up from the light by the time the second one goes off. Option 2: Get something like Citrus Alarm Clock for your computer that will play a playlist 2a: Set it to fade in a whole album starting half an hour before you have to wake up, hitting full volume when you want to get out of bed. I used Chemical Brothers Live @ Barcelona and had the volume peak during Star Guitar 2b: Set your computer to max volume, no fade-in, and have it play Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse. |
I used to have 3 alarmclock going at the same time.
1. My Cell Phone 2. My computer alarm clock 3. Alarm clock..... Still manage to be late for school. Then i switch to multiple alarm on my cell phone Still manage to be late for school Then i got my SO to call me to wake me up Still manage to be late for school Then I tried all of the above... Still manage to be late for school..... The conclusion is .... whether there is snooze or not...... I still manage to be late for school...... |
