Electoral College Debate

Ok, fellow TFP'ers, I have come for your advice again. My communications class is doing a debate for our final exam (no exam!!) And we are in groups of 2. My group's topic is the electorial college, and I have to defend the reasons why we should KEEP the college. Yes, this is going to be a tough one, as I have many reasons myself why we should get rid of it.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Simply, the EC is vital to give importance to states such as Wyoming, Alaska, and Montana.

Without the EC, it would be possible to win an election by merely pandering to densely-populated urban areas.

With the EC, these states actually mean something, especially when approached collectively.

The EC also forms the underpinning of our form of government. We are NOT a democracy! We are a democratic republic, or an association of States linked together in a democratic process. The States' rights are what are protected in the electoral section of the Constitution, not necessarily the rights of the individuals voting. It is up to the individual states to protect the rights of the populace.
