"Polished" Silverware

Well, boys and girls, we've hit that time of the year again, when Mrs. O'Rights breaks out the O'Rights family china and silverware, for the holidays. Guess whos job it is to polish said silverware. That's right...me! Now, if you think that I'm gonna sit and buff each and every spoon in that fancy velvet lined wooden box, with metal polish...guess again. We're talkin' a years worth of tarnish, on a shitload of spoons! I gots better things to do with my time. So...what Mrs. O'Rights doesn't know, doesn't hurt her. (she actually thinks that I sit and buff all those forks, knives and spoons. HAH!) Here's my trick. Take a baking pan (I use one thats 3x9x13) and line the bottom with aluminum foil. Now, place the spoons, etc. on the foil (each piece has to make contact with the foil), boil up some H2O in a sauce pan and disolve in some baking soda. Pour the boiling water into the baking pan. Wait about 5 minutes. The tarnish will pull off the silverware, and "attach" itself to the aluminum foil. Violia! Nice shiny silverware for another holiday season. Mrs. O'Rights thinks I work my fingers to the bone every year shining up our silver. Don't anyone dare tell her otherwise...'cause I don't have a trick for peeling potatoes. ;)

I found that adding some salt to the mixture works well also. I cleaned a silver necklace on a much smaller scale like this not too long ago. :)

Line a 5-gallon bucket with a few layers of chicken wire mesh, drop in potatoes, fill with water until potatoes are covered. Place on turntable of some sort (lazy susan from you rold kitchen set, maybe,) grasp handle, and twist back and forth for five minutes. The skins will be ripped off by the wire and they can be washed off to remove debris.

Not sure this will work:

The tarish is caused by oxidation, right?

Wrap the silverware box in cling film to keep out the air.

Might work.
